Ascot Delivers Saturday Spectacle
What a cracking afternoon we've had at Ascot! The Berkshire venue rolled out the red carpet for a proper Saturday card that had everything - from nervous debutants in the opener to seasoned campaigners battling it out in the feature.
The going rode perfectly after that recent vertidrain work, and you could sense the quality throughout the seven-race programme. This wasn't your typical weekend fare - there were horses here with genuine class, and several that'll be lighting up the winter months ahead.
The atmosphere was electric from the off, with punters clearly relishing the chance to see some proper National Hunt action on what turned out to be a glorious May afternoon.
Feature Race Sets The Standard
The Bangor-on-Dee Handicap Chase was always going to be the day's centrepiece, and what a contest it shaped up to be. With £30,000 on offer over three miles, this Class 2 affair attracted a field that could grace any weekend card.
Twig went off favourite carrying the 145 rating, and you can see why. Beau Morgan's mount has been knocking on the door all season, and the step up to three miles looked tailor-made. The 'D' next to his name tells you he's been disappointing lately, but class is permanent.
Cruz Control brought serious credentials to the party. Stan Sheppard's booking caught the eye, and that 139 rating puts him right in the mix. This horse has been campaigned intelligently all season, and connections clearly fancied their chances here.
Don't sleep on Mars Harper either. Jamie Gambin takes the ride, and at 135, he's well capable of mixing it with these. The three-mile trip should suit down to the ground.
Ones To Follow From The Supporting Cast
The earlier F Jones Initiative Chase threw up some serious talking horses for the future. Nibras Gold looked the class act of the field with that 120 rating, and Jonathan Burke's association suggests this one's going places.
But keep a close eye on Yes Indeed. James Best climbs aboard this 117-rated chaser, and despite that 'D' for disappointing, there's serious ability here. Sometimes horses just need the right day, the right track, the right trip.
Jet of Dreams is another to file away. Brendan Powell knows his way around Ascot, and this horse has been progressive all season. The 115 rating suggests there's more to come.
In the handicap hurdle, Magic Wave and Torrent both carried 110 ratings into battle. These are proper horses, not your average Saturday plodders. Jamie Hamilton on Magic Wave particularly catches the eye - he doesn't take rides lightly.
Maiden Magic And Future Stars
The opening maiden hurdle was fascinating viewing. Mega Etoile stood out like a sore thumb with that 98 rating amongst the newcomers. Brendan Powell's booking screams confidence, and you don't often see rated horses mixing it with the maidens unless connections are very sure of their ground.
But maiden hurdles are where dreams are born. Double Indemnity with Theo Gillard looked interesting on paper, while Ladies Day carried local hopes with Jack Andrews in the saddle.
The mares' bumper to close the card deserves special mention. Charlie Deutsch on Anniespatient and Sam Twiston-Davies partnering Lady Coco suggests there's serious talent lurking in what looks like a competitive finale.
Magnifix du Moulin is one to keep onside too. That's a proper French name if ever I heard one, and Freddie Keighley's booking adds weight to the theory that this one's got ability.
Looking Ahead - Where Next?
The beauty of a card like today's Ascot racecard is that you're watching the stars of tomorrow. These horses will pop up throughout the summer and into the winter months, and punters who were paying attention today will have a serious edge.
Expect to see the feature race performers heading to the summer festivals. Courses like Perth, Newton Abbot, and Worcester will be calling, and several of today's runners look perfectly placed to take advantage of easier opportunities.
The maiden hurdle winner will be one to follow wherever they go next. First-time-out winners in May often develop into serious prospects by the time the proper National Hunt season kicks off.
