A Monday Evening Worth Staying In For — Or Rather, Getting Out For

My dad used to say that Monday evening racing was the universe's way of softening the blow of the working week. I'm not sure the universe is quite that considerate, but I've never entirely disagreed with him either. There's something genuinely lovely about a summer evening at Bangor-on-Dee — the River Dee glinting in the distance, the Welsh hills doing their thing on the horizon, and a card of six races to keep you pleasantly occupied until the light fades. Tonight is exactly that kind of evening.

The going is reported as Good to Firm, Good in places, which is about as ideal as you'll get for summer flat racing. The ground is quick but not rattling, which should suit horses who travel well and like to get on with things. It Just Takes Time (rated 80) is also a course and distance winner and at eight years old, Mark Walford's veteran clearly still knows his way around here. Jack Garritty takes the ride. The old boy might just be ready for another moment in the sun if the handicapper has cut him any slack.

Glenfinnan for Michael Dods (rated 79) rounds out a competitive top three, and with Callum Rodriguez aboard and course and distance form to his name, he's not without a shout at all.

18:30 — EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (5f, 2YO)

Opening the evening is a maiden for the babies, and with most of the field unrated, it's a bit of a lottery — but that's half the fun with two-year-old racing, isn't it? Concert Pitch (rated 66) for Brian Ellison is the only runner with an official mark, which suggests at least some previous racecourse experience. David Nolan takes the ride on Mubehir for Paul Midgley, and Nolan's experience at this level is never to be underestimated. Kevin Stott partners the Kevin Ryan-trained Perryston, and Ryan's two-year-olds are always worth a second glance in the summer months. Cieren Fallon rides Soldier's Echo for Hugo Palmer, another yard that knows how to have a runner ready on debut. This one is genuinely open, but the jockey bookings alone make it worth watching.

19:00 — Happy Birthday Katie Exon Handicap (5f, 4YO+)

First things first — happy birthday, Katie. Now, down to business. This Class 6 sprint is packed with course and distance winners, which always makes for a lively puzzle. Dream Deal (rated 62) carries both the [C] and [D] markers for Tim Easterby, with David Allan in the saddle — a combination that knows this track well. Dandy Dinmont and Beerwah are also double course-and-distance qualified. On good to firm ground, Shane Gray on the top-rated Great (65) could prove the one to side with if he travels well — he's at the head of the weights for a reason.

20:00 — Napoleons Casino Handicap (7f 96y, 3YO+)

A competitive Class 6 over the same trip as the feature, and King Sharja (rated 55) for Ruth Carr stands out immediately with both course and distance form. James Sullivan rides. Among the three-year-olds, Ice Show for David O'Meara is the joint top-rated and Cieren Fallon gets a second ride of the evening — he's been in good nick and is always worth following when connections go to the trouble of booking him.

21:00 — Racing Again Next Tuesday Handicap (1m 1f 207y, 3YO+)

The closer is a lovely little Class 5 over a mile and nearly two furlongs, and Shimmering Sands (rated 75) is the standout. The seven-year-old for Michael and David Easterby is a double course and distance winner — she knows this track like an old friend, and Joanna Mason, who is utterly brilliant around here, takes the ride. If the ground hasn't firmed up too much by the final race, this partnership looks very hard to oppose.

How the Going Affects Tonight's Selections

Good to Firm ground rewards horses that are efficient in their movement — those who don't waste energy and can quicken when asked. It's not the ground for big, heavy-striding gallopers who need some cut to really find their feet. For the sprints (18:30 and 19:00), the fast surface should mean the pace is strong from the off, which can suit horses drawn wider if they can get across quickly. In the longer races, stamina is still important, but horses who travel smoothly and don't need soft ground to show their best will have the edge tonight.
