A Proper Summer Jumps Card on the South Coast

There's something refreshingly honest about a summer jump meeting. No frills, no fancy dress, just horses, fences and a proper afternoon's racing. Brighton serves up exactly that today with a seven-race card run on Good ground — about as fair a surface as you'll find in mid-July. The ground has dried out nicely without getting quick, and that matters enormously when you're picking through a card like this one.

Good ground at Brighton in summer is a leveller. It rewards horses that travel well and jump fluently rather than those that need a bit of cut to get into their races. Bear that in mind as we work through the card. The full Brighton racecard is worth studying in detail, but let me pull out the races and runners that I think matter most today.

The Feature Race: Cartmel Crystal Cup Handicap Hurdle (15:47)

The £30,600 Cartmel Crystal Cup is the race of the day, and it's a cracking contest on paper. Thirteen runners over 2m 6f 31y, Class 3, and a field packed with course and distance experience. This is where the serious punting gets done.

Caughtinyourtrance (rated 125, James Moffatt) is the one I keep coming back to. Course and distance winner — that [C,D] badge means everything on a track as unique as Brighton — and he goes well fresh. The good ground won't inconvenience him at all. Shantwopointfive (rated 123, Sam England) also holds C,D form and has Jonathan England in the saddle, a combination that's been ticking along nicely this summer.

At the top of the weights, Tommie Beau carries 130 and eleven years on his back. Seamus Mullins has kept him remarkably fresh, and he's a course winner, but top weight at his age on good ground over this trip is asking questions. I'll side against him finding the necessary reserves late on.

The one that excites me most at a price is Howdoyalikeherhome (Gordon Elliott, 121). Sam Ewing takes the ride, and Elliott's string has been in fine form. He's not got the C,D flag but he's well-handicapped on his best form and the good ground is bang in his wheelhouse. Watch him travel sweetly through the early stages — if he's still on the bridle turning in, he's a serious danger.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

14:00 — The Hadwins Novices' Hurdle

Gordon Elliott's Newbrook Diamond heads the market on a rating of 126 — streets clear of the field on official figures — and Sam Ewing is a shrewd booking. At six, he's not young for a novice, but that experience counts over 2m 6f on good ground. He should win if jumping fluently.

The interesting one underneath is Viscountess Nelson (Nicky Henderson, 111) ridden by Mr Daniel Williams. Henderson doesn't send horses to Brighton in July for fun. She's 15lb behind the top-rated on paper but Henderson's novice hurdlers often have more in the locker than their rating suggests. One to keep onside each-way.

Jonjo O'Neill Jr. takes the ride on the unrated Nightflyer — a four-year-old from the family yard. Unbeaten runners from that stable at this time of year deserve respect, even without a handicap mark to go on. He's the unknown quantity in the race.

15:10 — The RF Miller & Co Female Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle

This Class 3 contest over 2m 1f 46y carries £24,600 and is a fascinating race. My Chiquita (James Moffatt, rated 125) is the top weight and holds both course and distance form — that's a significant edge in a field where many are having their first look at the track. Leah Noreci rides and she's been in good nick.

Saligo Bay (Sam England, rated 123) also has the C,D badge and Miss Heidi Palin keeps the ride. She's only 2lb behind the top weight and knows every inch of this course. I'd make her a genuine favourite.

Secret Force (Adrian Keatley, rated 122) is the intriguing one — a four-year-old rated 122, which is seriously smart for a horse that age. Isabelle Ryder rides, and if this youngster handles the track, she could be well ahead of her rivals on ability alone. The good ground will suit.

16:57 — The Shorefield Supplies Handicap Chase

Cuzco du Mathan (James Moffatt, rated 95) holds course and distance form and Leah Noreci is aboard again — she's having a busy day for the Moffatt yard and clearly knows these horses well. Top-rated in the field, C,D winner, good ground — he ticks the boxes. Dexter (Greenall & Guerriero, 92) also has C,D form and Toby Wynne is a capable pilot. These two look to fight it out.

17:30 — The Charnley's Home & Garden Centre Handicap Chase

The card closes with a six-runner Class 4 chase over 2m 5f 34y. Red Happy (George Bewley, rated 117) is top weight and a course winner — Jonathon Bewley keeps the ride in what looks a family operation running like clockwork. Passengerontheship (Sam England, 110) has both C,D form and Jonathan England in the saddle. The Englands have been a formidable team this summer and this horse loves Brighton. Don't dismiss Lermoos Legend (Mickey Bowen, 114) either — eleven years old but a course winner and Mr James Murray has shown he can get the best out of the older brigade.

How the Good Ground Shapes the Day

Good ground at Brighton in July is the ideal surface for this type of card. It's fast enough to favour horses that travel well and jump with confidence, but not so firm that you're worried about soundness. The key beneficiaries are horses with C,D form — they already know the track's undulations — and those from yards in form who are fit and ready to run.

What I'd avoid today are horses that have been running on softer ground recently and haven't proven they can quicken on a faster surface. Summer jumping rewards adaptability, and the trainers who bring horses here regularly — Moffatt, Sam England, George Bewley — understand that better than most. It's no coincidence that their names appear throughout the card.

Gavin Sheehan is worth following across the card too — he's a quality operator who tends to travel well on decent ground, and he picks up the ride on Rebel Tribesman in the opener and Evenwood Sonofagun in the Crystal Cup. Neither is my headline selection but both are capable of running into a place.

Similarly, Nathan Moscrop rides Frisky Whiskey in the opener and Dinons in the feature. The latter is a 13-year-old veteran but Brian Ellison doesn't waste entries, and on good ground over a trip he knows, Dinons could outrun his odds for a place.

Best Bets and Ones to Watch

  • Caughtinyourtrance (15:47) — Course and distance winner, well-handicapped, good ground suits. My best bet of the day.
  • Saligo Bay (15:10) — C,D form, strong jockey booking, only fractionally behind the top weight. Solid each-way proposition.
  • Howdoyalikeherhome (15:47) — Elliott in form, Ewing in the saddle, well-handicapped. Each-way value in a big field.
  • Cuzco du Mathan (16:57) — Top-rated, C,D winner, Moffatt yard in form. Should take plenty of beating.
  • Viscountess Nelson (14:00) — Henderson doesn't waste summer trips south. Each-way at a price in the opener.
