A Cheltenham Afternoon to Savour
Good to Soft, Soft in places — and honestly? Perfect for it. Cheltenham on a warm August Saturday has a flavour all of its own, and today's eight-race flat card delivered exactly the kind of afternoon that reminds you why this sport gets under your skin and never quite lets go.
The Cotswold crowd turned out in fine voice, the ground rode beautifully despite the give underfoot, and from the opening handicap all the way through to the staying contest that closed the card, there was barely a dull moment. Grab a pint, pull up a stool, and let's go through it all.
The Feature: Chester Stakes Sets the Tone
The headline act was always going to be the Virgin Bet Chester Stakes — a Listed contest over an extended mile and six furlongs that brought together some genuine staying talent and, frankly, a few horses with something to prove.
All eyes were on Lazy Griff (Callum Shepherd, rated 112) at the top of the weights. This is a horse who has been knocking on the door of Group company for a while now, and a Listed race on ground that suits him looked tailor-made. Shepherd has been in brilliant form all season and you'd back him to get the best out of a horse who sometimes needs a confident, patient ride over this kind of trip.
Right in his crosshairs, though, was By The Book (Billy Loughnane, rated 109). Loughnane has been the story of the summer — a young rider with ice in his veins and a tactical brain that belies his years. By The Book is versatile, tough, and absolutely loves getting into a proper staying contest. The 3lb difference at the weights looked workable.
Fantasy World (Rob Hornby, rated 103) carried the course form flag with the D marker and Hornby is never to be underestimated around here — he reads a race beautifully. Lady Vivian (Hector Crouch, rated 99) was the interesting each-way shout, a mare who has been quietly progressive and who carries course form of her own. Don't be surprised if she pops up in Pattern company before the season is out.
Ones to Follow — Horses That Caught the Eye
The Cheltenham racecard today was rich with progressive types, and a few names jumped out as horses worth tracking through the autumn.
Two Tempting (14:05)
Two Tempting, partnered by Rob Hornby in the opening Class 2 handicap, is a horse wearing the C and D badges — course and distance winner — and rated 99. In a field where the top weight Five Ways (rated 104) was the obvious danger, Two Tempting's proven ability around this track on this ground made him very hard to ignore. Hornby knows every blade of grass at Cheltenham. Watch this one carefully if connections aim him at a similar contest at the September meeting.
Nicely (15:15)
In the fillies' conditions stakes, Nicely (Hector Crouch, rated 89) stood out as a filly who has been crying out for this kind of opportunity. A course winner with a solid rating in a conditions race where several rivals were unrated — that's a lovely position to be in. If she's in the same form she showed last time, connections will be eyeing up a Listed entry before the turf season wraps up.
Roman Dragon (17:00)
The Class 3 six-furlong handicap was loaded with runners, but Roman Dragon (Jack Nicholls, rated 95) with his C and D course-and-distance form is the one I'd be writing in capital letters in the notebook. Nicholls is underrated as a jockey — sharp, competitive, and knows how to deliver a horse late. Roman Dragon at a mark of 95 in a Class 3 looks like a horse who could be heading towards a mark that doesn't reflect his true ability. One to watch.
Howth (17:35)
Closing the card, Howth (Rob Hornby, rated 81) in the staying handicap over nearly two miles caught the eye on paper. A course winner, well-handicapped on his best form, and with Hornby in the saddle — this is exactly the kind of horse that can go on a little autumn run if the ground stays in his favour. Connections might be tempted by a similar staying contest at Ascot or Newbury in September.
Jockey Watch: The Names Making Noise
Billy Loughnane was everywhere today — four rides across the card, including the feature. He's been the most talked-about young jockey in the weighing room all summer and days like this are why. His partnership with By The Book in the Chester Stakes was the most compelling narrative of the afternoon.
Rob Hornby was another with a busy book of rides, and his familiarity with Cheltenham is a genuine weapon. Three rides with course or distance form attached — that's not a coincidence, that's a trainer trusting a jockey who delivers here.
Hector Crouch also deserves a mention. Three rides, two of them in conditions or listed company, and he's been quietly consistent all season without always getting the headlines. That might change soon.
The Novice Fillies and the Future
A quick word on the EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes over five furlongs — because these unraced or lightly-raced fillies are tomorrow's stories. Ivory Moon (Billy Loughnane) and Lady of Hay (Jason Watson) were the two that caught the eye in the betting market, and in a race full of unknowns, the early pace and how these fillies handle Cheltenham's unique undulations will tell us a great deal about their futures. Keep the notebook open — a winner here could be a Listed filly by next spring.
Final Verdict: A Day Worth the Drive
Cheltenham in August doesn't always get the credit it deserves — the autumn and spring festivals hog the limelight — but today was a reminder that this track produces quality racing year-round. Eight races, competitive throughout, ground that rewarded genuine ability, and a crowd that appreciated every stride of it.
The Chester Stakes was the jewel in the crown, the fillies' races offered a glimpse at the future, and the handicaps were exactly the kind of competitive, tactical affairs that make flat racing such a brilliant puzzle to unpick.
Check the full results and updated form on the Cheltenham racecard page, and keep an eye on Two Tempting, Roman Dragon, and Howth in particular — those are the three names I'll be circling when the autumn declarations start rolling in.
Another day at the races. Wouldn't swap it for anything.
