About Folkestone
Nestled in the picturesque Kent countryside, Folkestone Racecourse, though no longer operational, holds a cherished place in British racing history. Operating from the late 19th century until its closure in 2012, it was a popular dual-purpose venue, staging both flat and National Hunt meetings. The track itself was a right-handed, undulating oval of approximately one mile and four furlongs, known for its stiff finish that truly tested a horse's stamina and resolve. Its challenging nature, combined with a beautiful setting near the coast, made it a favourite amongst many racing enthusiasts and professionals alike. While it didn't host any Group 1 races, Folkestone was renowned for providing competitive action across all classes, often serving as a vital stepping stone for future stars and offering thrilling handicaps. Races like the Kent National were highlights on the jumps calendar. Paddock Punter remembers Folkestone fondly, a true gem of the south-east.
