About Newcastle
Newcastle Racecourse, nestled in Gosforth Park, boasts a rich history dating back to the 17th century, though its modern era truly began in 1882. It's a premier dual-purpose venue, staging both Flat and National Hunt racing. The Flat course features a superb 1m6f Tapeta all-weather circuit, complete with a straight mile, making it the only floodlit all-weather track in the North. This innovative surface ensures year-round racing and consistent ground, offering a fair and galloping test with gentle undulations. The National Hunt course, a turf track of similar circumference, provides a challenging yet fair test for jumpers. Newcastle is renowned for its two signature races: the Northumberland Plate, affectionately known as the "Pitmen's Derby," a two-mile handicap steeped in tradition held on the Flat, and the gruelling Eider Chase, a stamina-sapping test over fences in the winter. Its modern facilities combined with a classic racing atmosphere make it a highlight on the racing calendar for punters and racegoers alike.
