About Ripon
Welcome to Ripon, affectionately known as the "Garden Racecourse of Yorkshire." Steeped in history, racing here dates back to 1664, making it one of the oldest tracks in the country. This picturesque flat course offers a unique challenge for both horse and jockey. It's a right-handed, undulating oval track, demanding tactical riding with its sharp bends and a stiff uphill finish that truly tests stamina over its various distances, from the blistering five-furlong sprint straight to competitive middle-distance contests up to a mile and a half. Ripon is renowned for its vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere and beautifully maintained grounds. The course hosts quality flat racing throughout the summer, with its highlight being the prestigious Great St Wilfrid Handicap. This fiercely competitive sprint in August attracts top speedsters and offers a significant prize pot, making it a key date in the racing calendar. Ripon delivers an excellent day out and genuinely exciting racing.
