Setting the Scene: A Welsh Sunday Worth Your Attention

Right then, pull up a stool. It's a Sunday afternoon in Carmarthenshire, the valleys are looking grand, and Ffos Las is serving up six National Hunt contests to keep us all honest. The going is Good, sitting on the easy side with a SMMR of 47 — and that's a reading worth paying close attention to today. We're not in bottomless-bog territory, but there's enough give underfoot to bring stamina into the equation, particularly in those longer chases. Horses that want the ground to cut up a little, that like to really dig in and grind it out, are going to be at a considerable advantage. File that away. We'll come back to it.

Six races, a conditional jockeys' hurdle to kick us off, a bumper to close, and a pair of ARC Summer Chase Series qualifiers sandwiched in the middle. It's not Cheltenham, I'll grant you that, but there's proper prize money on offer, some interesting horses in the mix, and — as ever at this track — the course-and-distance form counts for an awful lot. The Feature Race: Maiden Hurdle Brings Henderson's Big Gun

On prize money, the 14:55 KSR Lighting Maiden Hurdle (Class 4, 2m 3f, £10k) shares top billing with the 16:40 chase, but this is the one that catches my eye first because of the quality lurking within it. Five runners, no handicap marks to hide behind, and Coastal Command (6yo, Nicky Henderson/Nico de Boinville) is the one everyone will be watching.

Henderson sending anything to Ffos Las on a Sunday in September tells you something — he doesn't make unnecessary journeys. Nico de Boinville takes the ride, and that combination alone is enough to make the layers nervous. However, I'd want to see this horse's homework before getting carried away. The unrated runners in this field are all unknowns, and Moab (6yo, rated 110, Henrietta Knight/Brendan Powell) already has a mark, which suggests experience and ability. A rating of 110 in a maiden hurdle is no joke — Knight's horses tend to show up fit and ready, and Powell is a canny operator around a track like this.

Downtown Nashville for Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen is one I'd keep an eye on too. Murphy's been in fine fettle and Bowen knows how to deliver a horse late on a track that rewards those who settle and travel. This race is wide open, but if you're forcing me to take a view, Coastal Command is the one to beat — just don't mortgage the house on it.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

Atreides (14:20 Conditional Hurdle)

The opening 14:20 conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle over 2m 5f looks a decent puzzle. Top-rated is Royal Rhythm (10yo, rated 96, Jonjo & AJ O'Neill) but at ten years of age, on ground that's going to ask stamina questions, I'm not convinced he's the answer. Give me Atreides (8yo, rated 94) for Neil Mulholland instead. He's a course-and-distance winner — that [C] flag doesn't lie — and Mr Laurie Gallacher takes the ride. Mulholland's horses tend to come here in good shape, and the easy side of Good on 2m 5f is right up Atreides' street. He's weighted to be competitive and he's been here and done it before. That counts for plenty.

Freddie Mitchell on Jefe Triunfo for Chris Gordon is another to respect — Gordon runs two in this race, which is always interesting. Fern O'Brien partners the stablemate County Champs, and you'd have to wonder if there's a stable plan at play. Worth keeping both on your radar, but Atreides is my pick of the opener. Benjamin Macey on Royal Rhythm and Toby McCain-Mitchell on Clever Relation round out the conditional contingent — both capable riders, but their mounts face stiff tasks on these ratings.

Gata Ban (15:30 Handicap Chase)

Now we're talking. The 15:30 KEP Communications Handicap Chase over 3m 1f 210y is a proper stamina test on this going, and Gata Ban (9yo, rated 91, Neil Mulholland/Dylan Johnston) jumps off the page immediately. Course-and-distance winner — that [C,D] flag is as good as gold at Ffos Las. Nine years old, knows every blade of grass on this track, and 3m 1f on the easy side of Good is exactly what he wants.

Edgewell (8yo, rated 92, Nick Scholfield/Harry Reed) is the top-rated runner and holds a distance certificate [D], so he's not without claims. But Mulholland's double course-and-distance form with Gata Ban gives him the edge in my book. Of Corse I Can (9yo, rated 69) is also a course-and-distance winner for Mulholland — three runners, same yard, same track — you'd want to know which one the stable fancies most. At the weights, Gata Ban looks the logical choice. Unspeakable for Jack Tudor and Christian Williams is interesting at a big price — Tudor is a quality rider who gets the best out of horses on this type of ground — but he's got plenty to find on ratings.

Ask A Sainte (16:05 Class 4 Hurdle)

The David and Carol Pugh Memorial Handicap Hurdle at 16:05 is a cracking little race. Five runners separated by just six pounds at the top, which means the jockeys and the ground are going to do the talking. Ask A Sainte (6yo, rated 107, Olly Murphy/Sean Bowen) is my selection. Murphy and Bowen have been a formidable combination, and this horse looks well-handicapped relative to the others. No More Bolero with Harry Cobden is never one to dismiss, and Start Again for Fergal O'Brien is the top-rated runner at 108 — but it's a tight enough field that the Murphy/Bowen combination tips the balance for me.

Martin's Denuo (16:40 Class 4 Chase)

The 16:40 Bison Events Handicap Chase over 2m 5f is a GBB race and an ARC Summer Chase Series qualifier — so there's more than just prize money at stake. Only four runners, but what a four they are. Martin's Denuo (4yo, rated 108, David Pipe/Rian Corcoran) is a fascinating runner — only four years old in a field of experienced chasers, but Pipe doesn't enter horses in races he doesn't think they can win. Jiair Madrik (7yo, rated 110, Donald McCain/Theo Gillard) is the top-rated and McCain has been in fine form. Midnight Jewel (10yo, rated 104) is a course-and-distance winner [C,D] — never underestimate the old soldier who knows the track. This is genuinely difficult to call, but Martin's Denuo's youth and Pipe's shrewdness give him the nod by a short head.

The Bumper: Skelton's Delulu to Sign Off the Day

The closing 17:15 mares' bumper is a Category 1 Elimination and a GBB race — seven four and five-year-old mares in a 2m 1f flat race. In bumpers, pedigree and trainer form are everything, and Delulu (4yo, Dan Skelton/Harry Skelton) ticks both boxes emphatically. The Skelton operation is a machine, Harry knows how to deliver a bumper horse, and Dan rarely sends one to Wales without a solid opinion behind it. She's my selection to end the day on a high.
