A Fond Evening on the Kent Coast

My old dad used to say that there were two things in life you should never rush: a good cup of tea and a summer evening at the races. He'd have loved a night like this one. Six races, a warm August breeze drifting in off the Channel, and the kind of going that rewards proper racehorses. Folkestone has always had a certain charm about it — unpretentious, friendly, and with enough undulation to sort out the genuine articles from the passengers. Tonight feels like a proper evening's sport.

The going is reported as Good to Firm, Good in places, with 38% soil moisture — a surface that puts a real premium on horses who travel well through their races. It's not a track where you want to be doing your best work from the rear. Front-runners and hold-up horses who can quicken off a sound pace tend to thrive here, and that's worth keeping firmly in mind as we work through the Folkestone racecard.

The Feature Race: EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes (16:35)

We start the evening with the Virgin Bet / EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes over six furlongs — a Class 3 contest for two-year-old fillies with £20,000 on the line, making it comfortably the most valuable race of the night and the one the form students will be poring over come Saturday morning.

None of the six runners carry an official rating, which is the nature of maiden racing at this level — we're essentially watching futures being written in real time. With Queen of Christmas a non-runner, we're down to five, and there's some genuinely interesting horseflesh in here.

Cut And Sew, trained by Ed Walker and ridden by Kieran Shoemark, catches the eye immediately. Walker has been in fine form this season and Shoemark is one of the sharpest minds in the saddle — he rarely gets on a two-year-old in a race like this without good reason. On good to firm ground, a well-bred filly with a bit of pace in her pedigree could go very well indeed.

Gobby Grace, representing Richard Hughes and ridden by Hector Crouch, is another to keep on side. Hughes knows how to place a juvenile, and Crouch has the kind of light, sympathetic hands that can coax a performance out of a filly on debut. Don't be surprised if she travels well through the race and picks up nicely in the final furlong.

Wig Wam Bam (Tom Marquand, Jack Channon) rounds off the trio worth watching. Channon's yard has a solid record with precocious types, and Marquand — as reliable as they come — will ensure she's in the right place at the right time. On this going, if she's got any toe at all, she'll be competitive.

Motown Filly, trained by Richard Spencer and ridden by George Wood, is an interesting outsider. Spencer has quietly been putting together a decent season, and Wood is a rider who deserves more credit than he sometimes gets. Worth keeping on your side at a price.

Key Races to Follow Through the Evening

17:10 — White & Brooks Fillies' Handicap (1m 1f 197y)

Thirteen fillies and mares go to post in this Class 5 handicap, and the course-and-distance winners immediately grab the attention. Shady Bay (Saffie Osborne, Tom Ward) has form over this track and trip — always a significant advantage at Folkestone, where the undulations can catch out horses encountering them for the first time. Hauteluce (Kieran Shoemark, Ed Walker) also holds a course-and-distance win and, with Shoemark booked again, the Walker yard clearly fancies their chances. On good to firm ground, both should be travelling comfortably enough to make their experience count.

Brighton Beach (Tom Marquand, William Haggas) is a filly from one of the most powerful yards in training, and Haggas horses tend to be well-prepared for their targets. She's rated 73 and on a fair mark. If the ground suits, she could outrun her price.

17:45 — Virgin Bet Fillies' Handicap (1m 3f 218y)

This GBBPlus race over a mile and three furlongs is a proper test of stamina, and the going will thin out those who merely look the part. Kissmehoneyhoney (Tom Marquand, William Haggas) is the top-rated runner at 79 and comes from the same powerful Haggas operation. Marquand riding for Haggas at a track like this is always worth a second look. Liveinthelight (Shoemark, Ollie Sangster) has course form and, with Shoemark aboard again, this looks like a yard that has targeted the evening well. Kelly Burn (Ashley Lewis, James Fanshawe) also holds course-and-distance form and shouldn't be underestimated.

18:20 — Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Handicap (5f)

Five furlongs on good to firm ground — this is where the sprinters earn their corn. Ruby's Profit (Tom Marquand, Tom Ward) is the top-rated runner at 82 and, crucially, holds both course and distance form. That's a rare double advantage and on this going, with Marquand in the saddle, she's the one they all have to beat. Grandlad (Jack Mitchell, James Horton) is another course-and-distance winner and has the profile of a horse who turns up and performs. Don't ignore him at what could be a generous price.

19:28 — Gay Kindersley Amateur Jockeys' Handicap (1m 1f 11y)

We close the evening with the always-entertaining amateur riders' contest, named in honour of the legendary Gay Kindersley — a lovely touch that reminds us of racing's rich tradition of celebrating its own. These races can be unpredictable, but Pride of Nepal (Miss Brodie Hampson, Tony Carroll) has course-and-distance experience and, at eight years old, knows his job. Platinum Prince (Miss Alice Crowley, Gary & Josh Moore) also holds course-and-distance form and the Moore yard know how to prepare a horse for an occasion like this.

Going Conditions: What It Means Tonight

Good to firm with 38% soil moisture is a surface that rewards horses with a clean, efficient action — those who don't slap into the ground. Horses who've won on similar ground previously are at a clear advantage, and the course-and-distance markers [C] and [D] in tonight's fields are your best friends. Folkestone's track has enough of a climb and dip to expose any horse who doesn't truly stay their trip, so stamina is a genuine factor in the longer races. In the sprints, early pace is key — the ground will be quick enough that dawdling in the early stages leaves you with too much to do.

  • Pride of Nepal (19:28) — Veteran know-how in the amateur riders' race. Sometimes experience is worth more than ratings.
