The Sussex track was riding a treat on good to good-to-firm ground, perfect conditions for the speedier types to show their wares over the minimum trip, while the longer distances provided a proper test of stamina. The £30,000 Weatherbys Digital Solutions Clyde Handicap was the jewel in today's crown, and what a competitive heat it proved to be. This was no gimme for the favourite - Botanical has been knocking on the door with some solid efforts at this track, while Al Mubhir's connections clearly fancied their chances dropping back from Pattern company. But class will out, as they say, and Diego Ventura's turn of foot over the mile proved decisive.
Tom Marquand aboard Eternal Force caught the eye in defeat - this one's been mixing it in better company and could be worth following when the handicapper shows a bit of mercy. The way he travelled through the race suggests there's more to come from this lightly-raced sort.
Juvenile Promise and Future Stars
The opening 2-year-old fillies' maiden might have been a small field, but these early-season juveniles always deserve close scrutiny. Angels Passing, Jazz Queen, Little Lady Karen, and Meennaa - one of these lasses could easily pop up in better company before the season's out.

Storm On Jura and Sophiesticate both showed they relish a test of stamina, and both look capable of picking up races at similar levels. These staying handicappers often improve through the summer as they build fitness and confidence.

Today's action threw up several horses worth following in the coming weeks. Diego Ventura will likely step back up in class, possibly targeting some of the better summer handicaps at tracks like Goodwood or York. His performance today suggests he's well up to Listed company on his day.
