Good Ground, Great Racing at Glorious Goodwood
Right then, punters, we're off to the rolling hills of Goodwood this Saturday afternoon, and by Jaysus, what a card we have in store! The going is sitting pretty at Good to Good to Soft in places on an 80:20 ratio - perfect jumping conditions that'll suit the bold and the brave. None of that jar-your-teeth-out firm nonsense or energy-sapping heavy slop. This is proper National Hunt ground that'll separate the wheat from the chaff.
Seven races on the Goodwood racecard today, with the feature being that mouth-watering £80,000 Swinton Handicap Hurdle at 13:15. But don't be sleeping on the Long Distance Hurdle beforehand - nearly four miles of pure stamina test that'll have the weak-hearted reaching for the oxygen mask!
The Main Event: Swinton Handicap Hurdle Analysis
The Swinton is where the serious money changes hands, and with 17 runners going to post, we've got ourselves a right old cavalry charge over a mile and seven furlongs. Laafi sits pretty at the top of the weights with a rating of 141, and P. Byrnes in the saddle for William Durkan. This lad's been knocking on the door in similar company, and the slight ease in grade here could be just the ticket.
But hold your horses before diving in blind on the favourite! Bucephalus for Neil Mulholland is a course and distance winner - and if you're not paying attention to that [D] marker, you're doing this game all wrong. Nine years old and rated 135, he's got Harriet Tucker doing the steering. This old warrior knows every blade of grass at Goodwood, and on this going, he'll be loving life.
Tellherthename catches the eye too - Dan Skelton's charge with Harry Skelton aboard has course form and comes here rated 133. The Skelton team have been firing in winners left, right and centre lately, and when they rock up with a course winner, you ignore them at your peril.
Long Distance Hurdle: The Stayers' Championship
Before we get to the Swinton shenanigans, there's the small matter of the Long Distance Hurdle at 12:45. Three miles and 58 yards of pure stamina slog, and Eagle Fang looks the class act of this field. Rated 145 and with P. Byrnes again taking the ride for William Durkan, this six-year-old has the engine for this marathon.
Harbour Lake demands serious respect though - he's both course and distance suited, which in a race like this is worth its weight in gold. Tom Bellamy knows this old boy inside out, and at 10 years old, he's not getting any younger but he's proven at this trip. Alan King's stable is in good form, and this fella could easily nick this at a price.
Don't completely dismiss La Pinsonniere either - Nico de Boinville for Nicky Henderson is always dangerous, and this six-year-old is lightly raced over this distance. Sometimes the unknown quantity in a staying test can spring a surprise.
Going Conditions: The Great Leveller
This Good to Good to Soft ground is an absolute godsend for the long-distance merchants. It's got just enough cut in it to test stamina without being a complete slog, and the faster horses won't be disadvantaged by jarring conditions. In the Long Distance Hurdle, this surface will suit the likes of Eagle Fang who can travel and quicken, while still being testing enough to find out the stayers from the faders.
For the Swinton, the ground plays into the hands of the versatile types. Course winners like Bucephalus and the course-and-distance proven Gibbs Island will have a significant advantage knowing exactly how to handle Goodwood's unique undulations on this surface.
The Supporting Cast Worth a Punt
The bumper at 13:48 is always worth a look for future stars, and with both Alan King and Nicky Henderson represented, there could be some serious talent on show. St Gabriel for Henderson with Nico de Boinville aboard screams class, while King's Aribidia with Tom Bellamy up could be anything.
The flat racing later in the card has some decent prizes on offer too, with Lake Forest looking the class act in the Spring Trophy Stakes, though that's getting away from our bread and butter jump racing.
Trainer Form Watch
Keep a close eye on anything from the Dan Skelton yard today - they're absolutely flying at the moment and have multiple runners across the card. William Durkan's double-handed assault with Eagle Fang and Laafi suggests serious confidence from across the Irish Sea, and when Irish trainers make the trip with multiple runners, they usually mean business.
Tom's Verdict: The Ones to Follow
Best Bet: Eagle Fang in the Long Distance Hurdle - class will tell over this marathon trip, and the going is spot on for him to show his superior rating.
Each-Way Special: Bucephalus in the Swinton - course and distance winner at a decent price in a competitive handicap. The [D] form figures don't lie.
Surprise Package: Harbour Lake in the Long Distance Hurdle - course and distance proven, Tom Bellamy knows him well, and he could easily outrun his odds in a staying test.
Dark Horse: Tellherthename in the Swinton - the Skelton team are in flying form, and this one has the course form to be competitive off his current mark.
There you have it, folks - a proper day's jumping ahead at Goodwood. The ground is perfect, the fields are competitive, and there's money to be made if you're smart about it. Just remember - in staying races, stamina beats speed every time, and course form is worth twice its weight in gold. Sláinte, and may the odds be ever in your favour!
