That said, What's The Plan (3yo, rated 74, James Fanshawe) holds a course win [C] and is partnered by the classy Daniel Muscutt. A course winner at the same rating as the top weight is never one to dismiss lightly. This looks a genuine match between two, with the going likely to suit both.

The Craftymaster — 18:40 Staying Handicap (2m 68y)

Two miles on a summer evening — this is where the staying brigade earns its keep. The Craftymaster (6yo, rated 53, Tony Carroll) is a course-and-distance winner [C,D], and that double flag over this sort of trip is enormously significant. Stayers are creatures of habit; they find tracks they like and they go back to them. Ridden tonight by the promising Myla Coppins, this is a partnership worth watching. Carroll is a trainer who knows exactly where to place his horses, and a six-year-old who already knows his way around this track on this sort of ground is a compelling proposition.

Tiny Riot (3yo, rated 60, Dan Skelton) is the highest-rated horse in the field and carries a distance win [D]. The three-year-old allowance could make the weight cloth feel lighter, and Kieran Shoemark is an excellent jockey for a front-running type over a staying trip. Don't ignore this one.

Hilltop — 20:10 Fillies' Handicap (7f)

The penultimate race of the evening is a fillies' handicap over seven furlongs, and Hilltop (5yo, rated 75, Daniel & Claire Kubler) catches the eye immediately — a course-and-distance winner [C,D] who tops the ratings. The Kublers have been building a fine training operation, and a filly who already has form figures at this exact track and trip on similar ground deserves to be near the top of your shortlist. Oisin Murphy doesn't pick up rides like this without reason — he's on Stormy Music (3yo, rated 68, Andrew Balding) in this one, which is worth noting. Murphy tends to have a good idea of what he's sitting on.

How the Going Shapes Tonight's Card

Good to Firm with a soil moisture reading of 21 tells us the surface has some pace to it, but it's not a rattling fast track that would concern connections. Horses with a fluent, economical action will be in their element. Plodders who need soft ground to grind out their best are likely to find tonight's conditions against them.

For the two-year-olds in the 19:10 Nursery Handicap over the sharp five furlongs, quick ground will emphasise natural speed. Sable Island and Dreamlover share top billing on ratings (both 65), but in juvenile sprints on fast ground, the horse with the cleanest, most natural action often wins regardless of rating.
