A Grand Day Out in Shropshire

Right, pull up a stool and listen in, because Ludlow is putting on a proper Saturday afternoon's entertainment this weekend, and there's more than a few quid to be made if you know where to look. Seven races, Good ground underfoot, and a feature hurdle worth £35,000 that has me rubbing my hands together like a man who's just spotted a 10-1 shot at the top of the betting. Check the full Ludlow racecard before you have a flutter, and let's get stuck in.

The going is Good — and I mean genuinely Good, not that soft-masquerading-as-Good nonsense we sometimes get handed in late September. This is proper ground for proper jumpers. Fast enough to flatter the slick travellers, but with enough give to keep the big, galloping types happy too. In short, it's a going description that opens the door wide open, and that means the form book is your friend today. Course and distance winners are going to be worth their weight in gold, and I'll be leaning heavily on that angle throughout.

The Feature Race: Block Free Services Lincoln Handicap Hurdle (17:30, Class 2, £35k)

This is the one that matters. Thirty-five thousand pounds over two miles and a furlong, twelve runners, and a handicap that looks competitive on paper but might just be cracked wide open if you study it right. The top of the weights is a fascinating little battle between Indemnity (rated 137, Emma Lavelle) and Indian River (rated 135, Adrian Keatley), and both arrive here with course or distance form to their name. That's not nothing — Ludlow's two-mile trip has its quirks, and horses who've been here before tend to know their way around.

Indemnity is the one I keep coming back to. Six years old, rated 137, and Ben Jones in the saddle — a combination that's been clicking nicely. She's a course and distance winner, she's got Emma Lavelle's operation in fine fettle, and Good ground is exactly what she wants. At the top of the weights she'll need to carry her burden well, but class horses do that. She's my idea of the one to beat.

Now, Harry Skelton takes the ride on Edelak for brother Dan, and you'd be a brave man to dismiss that combination at any track on any day of the week. Rated 132 and a distance winner, Edelak is 5lb lower than Indemnity and that could be significant in a race run at a proper clip on Good ground. The Skelton yard have been firing in winners all season and this looks like a horse they've targeted. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Further down the weights, Howth (Tom Lacey, Stan Sheppard) catches the eye as a course and distance winner at a very workable mark of 122. Tom Lacey is a trainer who knows how to place a horse, and Howth has the profile of one who could run into a place at the very least.

Key Runners Across the Card

14:30 — Mares' Maiden Hurdle

The opening mares' maiden is a tricky enough puzzle with several unraced or lightly raced types, but Elated (Ben Pauling, rated 98) stands out as the one with form on the board and a rating to match. She's the only runner with a published mark, which tells you everything you need to know about the experience gap. Harry Skelton takes the ride on Mighty Dink for the Skelton yard, and you'd never rule that pair out — Dan Skelton doesn't send horses to Ludlow for the scenery. But Elated's experience edge on Good ground makes her the one I'd side with.

15:05 — Juvenile Hurdle

The juvenile hurdle sees Vietnorm (rated 108, Adrian Keatley) as the one with the form figures, and a course and distance winner to boot. That's a significant advantage in a race full of unknowns. Harry Skelton is back again on Moment of Light — a course and distance winner too — and this could be a fascinating head-to-head between two horses who know the track. Skelton versus Keatley, experience versus experience. I'd lean towards Vietnorm on ratings but wouldn't be shocked if Moment of Light turned me over.

15:50 — Class 3 Handicap Chase

Just four runners but a cracking little contest. Sure Touch (Olly Murphy, rated 132) is the top weight and a course and distance winner — a ten-year-old who clearly loves this place. Jet To Vegas (Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, rated 131) arrives from the north with Brian Hughes aboard and shouldn't be underestimated. On Good ground, I'd side with Sure Touch's course knowledge, but at the prices this could be a case of taking the short one and hoping for the best.

16:25 — Class 5 Handicap Chase

Galway Reel catches my eye here — a course and distance winner for Olly Murphy with Sean Bowen in the saddle. That combination is hard to ignore, and at a mark of 95, he's not carrying the world on his back. Huckleberry Sting (rated 98) is the top weight and another course and distance winner, so this race is full of horses who know the track. But Bowen on a Murphy horse at a track like Ludlow? That's a combination that wins races.

17:00 — Class 5 Handicap Hurdle

Woodstock City (Olly Murphy, Sean Bowen, rated 100) tops the weights here and Murphy is clearly having a big day out in Shropshire. Dream Jet (Craig Nichol, Brian Ellison) is a course and distance winner at 96 and has to be respected. David Noonan takes the mount on Dante's Inferno down at the bottom of the weights — one to keep an eye on if the market moves.

18:00 — Closing Handicap Hurdle

The closer over two miles and seven furlongs rounds off the card, and The Clonmel Kid (Philip Kirby, Danny McMenamin, rated 98) heads the weights. The name alone has me half-tempted. Matoury is a course and distance winner for Mike Sowersby and could run into a place at a decent price.

Going Conditions: Why Good Ground Changes Everything

On Good ground at Ludlow, you want horses who travel fluently and don't need soft underfoot to show their best. The track itself is undulating — there's a stiff climb to the finish that catches out the one-paced plodders — and on Good going, that climb becomes even more of a test of genuine stamina and class. Horses who've won here before in similar conditions are worth a significant premium today. I've flagged the course and distance winners throughout, and I'd urge you to do the same when you're filling out your slip.

Stamina pedigrees matter less on Good ground than they would in the depths of winter, but over the longer trips — the two-mile-seven handicap chases and hurdles — you still want a horse who stays the trip comfortably rather than one who's being stretched. Keep that in mind for the 16:25 and the 18:00.

  • BEST BET: Indemnity (17:30) — Course and distance winner, top-rated, Ben Jones up, Emma Lavelle in form. The one to beat in the feature.
  • EACH-WAY: Edelak (17:30) — Harry Skelton and Dan Skelton don't travel for fun. Danger to the favourite at a workable weight.
  • EACH-WAY: Galway Reel (16:25) — Sean Bowen, Olly Murphy, course and distance winner. The formula writes itself.
  • WATCH: Moment of Light (15:05) — Course and distance winner with Skelton up. If the market says go, go.
  • SAVER: Howth (17:30) — Tom Lacey placing a course and distance winner off a fair mark. Could run into the placings at a price.
