Lights, Camera, Action at Musselburgh
What a cracking evening's entertainment we witnessed at Musselburgh on Thursday! Eight races packed with competitive action, and despite the standard going conditions, the quality of racing was anything but standard.
The East Lothian venue served up a proper feast for punters, with handicaps galore and a tasty maiden stakes that had the form students reaching for their notebooks. From the opening 6f dash to the closing 7f finale, there wasn't a dull moment in this evening spectacular.
The atmosphere was electric as the floodlights illuminated what turned out to be one of those cards where several horses announced themselves as serious players for the season ahead.
Feature Race Fireworks
The evening's centrepiece was undoubtedly the Class 4 handicap over six furlongs - 'THE MIDNITE ARE UPPING THE BETTING GAME HANDICAP STAKES' - and what a stellar field assembled for this £9,500 prize.
Almarada Prince headed the weights on 82, with David Nolan doing the steering. This one's been knocking on the door in similar company and looks ready to grab his moment. The booking of Nolan speaks volumes about connections' confidence.
But it was Cajetan who really caught the eye in the pre-race paddock parade. Jason Hart's mount looked a picture at 81, and there's something about this horse's recent work reports that suggests big things are coming.
Further down the weights, Raatea and Irish Nectar both carried the hopes of shrewd stable connections. Rowan Scott's partnership with Raatea has been profitable this season, while Irish Nectar's rating of 79 might just underestimate his current ability.
Maiden Magic and Future Stars
The Class 4 maiden stakes over 7f proved to be an absolute corker for those seeking future winners. Despite several non-runners depleting the field, the quality remained intact.
Portman Blue made his debut under Kyle McHugh and showed all the signs of a horse with a big engine. The way he moved through his paces suggested this won't be his last visit to the winner's enclosure.
But keep your notebooks handy for Cotai Eye Joe. Oisin Orr's booking for this one raised eyebrows in the weighing room, and rightly so. This horse has been working like a dream at home, and his connections are quietly confident about his prospects.
Supreme Lillia under Rowan Scott also deserves a mention. She's been showing plenty at home and could easily pop up in a similar contest soon.
Handicap Heroes and Ones to Follow
The evening's handicaps threw up several horses worth following as the season progresses.
In the opening contest, Harb looked well-treated on a mark of 65. Cian Horgan's mount has course and distance form in the bag, and there's a feeling this horse is coming to himself at just the right time.
Yorkshire Glory is another to keep on the right side. Harry Vigors has struck up a useful partnership with this one, and at 61, he looks to have plenty more to offer.
The marathon trip in the second race suited Fast Fred down to the ground. Rowan Scott seems to have found the key to this horse, and his rating of 70 might not reflect his true current ability.
Don't overlook Mystical Land in the 5f handicap either. Sean Kirrane's mount has been threatening to break through, and the drop back to the minimum trip could be exactly what he needs.
Jockey Watch and Stable Whispers
Several jockey and trainer combinations caught the eye throughout the evening's action. Jason Hart was busy with four rides across the card, suggesting several stables are keen to use his services for their better chances.
Rowan Scott also had a full book of rides, and his mounts consistently ran with credit. This young rider is making quite a name for himself on the northern circuit.
The booking of Paul Mulrennan for both Alpine Sierra and Beale Street suggested these were live chances in their respective contests. Mulrennan doesn't travel north without good reason.
From a stable perspective, several yards had multiple runners, indicating they view Musselburgh's evening card as a prime opportunity to get their horses winning.
Looking Ahead
This was the kind of evening that sets up several horses for profitable campaigns ahead. The handicappers will be busy after tonight's action, but several of these horses look well ahead of their marks.
Expect to see many of these runners back at Musselburgh in the coming weeks - this track has a habit of suiting certain types, and several horses showed they handle the unique characteristics of this seaside venue.
The maiden race winners from tonight will be ones to follow wherever they turn up next. Class 4 maiden form often works out well, and there were definitely a few future winners on show.
What a way to spend a Thursday evening! Musselburgh under the lights never disappoints, and tonight's card was a perfect reminder of why evening racing at this venue is such a treat. Roll on the next one!
