A Proper Summer's Day at Newbury

There's a particular kind of August afternoon at Newbury that I've always loved. The ground is quick, the shadows stretch long across the Berkshire countryside, and there's that wonderful hum of a racecourse in full summer swing. My dad used to call it "proper racing weather" — and looking at today's Good to Firm going, I think he'd have been rubbing his hands together with some enthusiasm.

Seven races are on the Newbury racecard this afternoon, ranging from a fascinating three-runner novice for the two-year-olds to a competitive grey horse handicap that should have even the most casual punter reaching for their racecard. Let's start with the ground. Good to Firm is about as good as it gets for summer flat racing. With a prize fund of £35,000, the Betway Bet £10 Get £40 Fillies' Handicap Stakes over a mile and six furlongs is comfortably the richest race of the day, and it deserves its status as the feature. It's a GBBPlus race too, which adds a nice bit of extra incentive for connections of the younger horses.

We should note straight away that Green Sky, trained by Rod Millman, is a non-runner, which brings the field down to five. That's a shame because she was the joint top-rated at 83, but these things happen and it opens the door nicely for the rest.

Dojin (4yo, rated 83, S.P.C. Woods) steps in as the new top weight and is partnered by Cieren Fallon, who has been in fine form this summer. She's a filly who has shown she stays well and on Good to Firm ground at this sort of trip, she could be very hard to peg back if she gets into a rhythm up front.

The three-year-olds in this race are worth a serious look, however. Alma Latina, trained by Ralph Beckett and ridden by Billy Loughnane, carries a rating of 81 and gets the three-year-old weight allowance, which is a real asset over this marathon trip. Beckett is a master with fillies, and Loughnane has been riding with a confidence that's been a joy to watch. This could be her day.

Reem Rak (Roger Varian, Ray Dawson) is another three-year-old to respect at 80, and Varian's yard rarely sends one out without it being fit and ready. At a mile and six on fast ground, stamina is everything — and these younger fillies may just have the edge in terms of freshness and enthusiasm.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

Archduke Ferdinand — 14:10 Grey Horse Handicap

I always enjoy the Grey Horse Handicap. There's something wonderfully eccentric about a race restricted to grey horses, and this year's renewal looks a cracker. At seven years old, Archduke Ferdinand (rated 79, Seb Spencer) might not be the youngest in the field, but he carries the crucial double badge of a course and distance winner — marked [C,D] — which on Good to Firm ground at Newbury's six furlongs is absolutely not to be ignored. Shay Farmer takes the ride and if the old boy is in the mood, he knows every blade of grass here.

Havana Blue (Julie Camacho, Ryan Sexton) is a course winner [C] and rates highly at 80 — Camacho's yard is flying at the moment and Sexton is a jockey who rides Newbury's six furlong track with real intelligence. He's one to watch closely from the stalls.

Maelstrom (Stuart Williams, Jack Doughty) is a distance winner [D] at the same rating of 80 and represents a yard that knows how to have a horse ready for a big summer handicap. At four years old, he's likely still improving and the Good to Firm ground should suit his style of racing.

Eabha — 15:13 Fillies' Nursery Handicap

The two-year-old fillies' nursery over seven furlongs is a lovely little race, and Eabha (Eve Johnson Houghton, Billy Loughnane) stands out a mile on ratings at 86 — a full nine pounds clear of her nearest rival. She's a course and distance winner [C,D], which tells you she handles this track and this trip with comfort. On Good to Firm ground, top-rated horses with course form tend to win these nurseries more often than not, and Loughnane's booking only adds to the confidence. This looks a strong each-way proposition at the very least.

Cherry Cobbler — 17:00 Closing Handicap

To close the day, keep an eye on Cherry Cobbler (Stuart Williams, Chloe Lyons) in the seven-furlong Class 5 handicap. A course and distance winner [C,D] rated 75, she's the sort of horse who turns up at a track she loves and just gets the job done. Williams saddles Maelstrom earlier in the day too — if that one runs well, you'd be tempted to follow the yard into the finale.

How the Going Shapes the Day

Good to Firm is the great leveller in one sense — it exposes horses who lack pace or struggle to quicken. Over the shorter trips like the six-furlong grey handicap and the seven-furlong closer, you want horses who can stride out freely and aren't relying on soft ground to get themselves into races. The course and distance winners really do come into their own here, because they've already shown they can handle Newbury's particular demands when the ground is riding quick.

Over the longer distances — particularly that mile and six fillies' handicap — the fast ground puts a premium on genuine stamina. Horses who stay well but also have a touch of class tend to dominate, which is why the three-year-olds with their weight allowances look so interesting. They're unproven over the trip in many cases, but youth and freshness on a summer's day can count for a great deal.

For the novice stakes opener at 13:35, the Good to Firm ground will suit whichever of the three debutants (or near-debutants) shows the best natural action. William Haggas, Charlie Appleby and John & Thady Gosden are three of the finest yards in the country — any one of them could produce a future star here. Robert Havlin takes the ride on Gosden's Waaqed, and Havlin is a jockey who rarely wastes a journey to Newbury. Worth noting.

  • Each-Way Pick: Archduke Ferdinand (14:10) — Course and distance winner in a race he clearly loves. At seven, he's been around the block — use that experience.
  • One to Watch: Maelstrom (14:10) — Distance winner, good rating, improving yard. Could go very close in the grey handicap.
  • Speculative Shout: Cherry Cobbler (17:00) — Course and distance form is hard to ignore in a Class 5 closer. A lovely way to end the afternoon.
