The going is the first thing you need to respect here. Good to Firm in places at Gosforth Park in late August means the track is riding quick and true — it rewards horses with a slick jumping technique and a decent cruising speed rather than those who want to grind it out in testing conditions. Stamina horses will still get their chance in the staying races, but anything that needs cut in the ground to show its best form can be crossed off the shortlist before you've even opened the racecard.

The Feature Race: Class 2 Handicap Chase (18:12)
The MD Elite Cleaning Handicap Steeple Chase is the standout race of the evening — a £25,000 Class 2 over 2m 75y that brings together six horses rated between 108 and 129. This is proper prize money for a Thursday evening card and the quality shows in the entries.
Breaking Cover (8yo, rated 129) heads the weights and carries the [C,D] badge — a course and distance winner at Newcastle, which on this track matters more than most. Anthony Honeyball's eight-year-old is the class act in the field on ratings, and Chad Bament takes the ride. The concern, as always with a top-rated horse in a handicap, is whether the assessor has left him enough to work with. At 129, he's giving lumps of weight to everything in the race.

My lean in the feature is Centara — Nicholls, course and distance form, and a jockey in form. Breaking Cover is the obvious danger but may just be found out by the weights.

St Just In Time (6yo, rated 104) is the only rated runner in the opener and that experience edge matters in a maiden hurdle. Harry Derham has been quietly building a solid training record and Paul O'Brien is a capable partner. With Iwanttobreakfree a non-runner, the field is down to five and St Just In Time's rating of 104 gives him a clear form advantage over the unrated rivals. On quick ground, his experience should count.
Keep an eye on Nightflyer (4yo) for the O'Neill yard — Jonjo O'Neill Jr. takes the ride and the combination is always worth respecting when they send something to an evening card like this. Four-year-olds can be raw but they can also surprise you.
17:12 — Novices' Handicap Chase: Knightsbridge
The Class 5 novices' chase over 3m 1f 170y is a staying test and the ground, while quick, shouldn't inconvenience most of these. Knightsbridge (6yo, rated 95) for the O'Neill yard again with Jonjo Jr. aboard looks the one to beat on ratings, though Premier Fantasy and Better Off Alone are both rated 100 and carry more experience. In a small field of five, the pace scenario matters — watch how this develops from the front.
18:42 — Handicap Hurdle: Final Entry
The staying hurdle over 3m 2f 105y is a real slog even on fast ground, and Final Entry (5yo, rated 98) for David Pipe stands out. The [C,D] flag is the key detail here — course and distance form at Newcastle is a significant advantage in a race like this. Rian Corcoran takes the ride. Jack The Savage (9yo, rated 95) for Sean Bowen is the biggest danger — Bowen rarely goes to an evening meeting without a live chance.
19:12 — Class 4 Handicap Chase: Thickthorn Tom
Thickthorn Tom (6yo, rated 107) for Dan Skelton and Harry Skelton is the one I'm most interested in across the whole card. The Skelton operation rarely wastes a journey, Harry knows how to ride a race on quick ground, and the [C,D] badge tells you everything you need to know about suitability. It's A Breeze (7yo, rated 106) for Paul Nicholls also carries [C,D] form and Paddy Hanlon is back aboard — another Nicholls runner that demands respect. Lady Kara (5yo, rated 110) heads the weights and the [C] flag suggests course form is there, but giving weight to the Skelton runner on this ground is a risk.
How The Going Shapes The Card
Good to Firm in places is the great leveller on a summer jump card. It exposes horses that have been flattered by soft ground earlier in the season and rewards those with a clean jumping action and natural pace. Across tonight's seven races, I'd be steering away from anything with a recent run on heavy or soft going that looks like it needs that cut to produce its best — the form simply won't translate.
For the chasers specifically, clean jumping becomes even more critical on quick ground. A horse that clips a fence on soft ground can recover; on fast ground, mistakes are punished harder and the momentum loss is more costly.
