Maid In Devon — 19:15 Brokerswood Handicap (6f)

The six-furlong handicap at 19:15 is a wide-open affair with ten runners, but Maid In Devon (3yo, rated 67) for Rod Millman stands out. She carries the course and distance badge — always a meaningful indicator on a track like Redcar where the straight mile can suit certain types — and Hector Crouch is back in the saddle again. For a horse rated 67 in a Class 5 sprint on fast ground, this looks a decent opportunity. Keep her firmly on your radar.

Thunderous Love — 19:15 Brokerswood Handicap (6f)

In the same race, Thunderous Love (5yo, rated 62) for Jonathan Portman also carries the course and distance flag, and at five years old she's an experienced campaigner who knows her job. Olivia Tubb takes the ride. The ground should suit, and experienced sprinters who've won at a track before often find a way to do it again. She's one to include in any combination bets.

Pride of Toledo — 18:15 Starman Novice Stakes (6f)

The opening race is a four-runner novice for two-year-olds, and with all runners unrated it's a proper leap of faith — but that's half the fun with juveniles, isn't it? Pride of Toledo for Clive Cox catches the eye. Cox is one of the shrewdest handlers of young horses in the country, and when he sends a two-year-old up to Redcar for a summer evening novice, it's rarely without purpose. Callum Rodriguez takes the ride — his second mount of the evening — and the six-furlong trip on fast ground should suit a precocious type. Worth a small each-way interest.

Virtue Diligence — 20:15 Madar Corporation Handicap (1m 4f)

The mile-and-a-half three-year-old handicap at 20:15 is an interesting puzzle. Virtue Diligence (rated 74) for Amanda Perrett is a filly I like the look of at this trip. Perrett trains staying types with real care, and Hector Crouch — riding his fourth mount of the card — knows how to settle a horse over a longer trip. The Good to Firm ground shouldn't inconvenience her, and if she's forward enough in her preparation, she could outrun her odds.

Matins — 18:45 Madar Corporation Maiden (1m)

William Haggas sending out Matins (3yo, unrated) for the mile maiden is always worth a second glance. Haggas doesn't make long trips for fun, and with Hector Crouch booked, the stable clearly means business. Kinetic Impact (rated 79 for Charles Hills and Rodriguez) is the obvious form pick, but unraced or lightly-raced Haggas types have a habit of showing up and winning these things. Keep an eye on the market before the off.

How the Going Affects Tonight's Racing

Good to Firm, Firm in places is the kind of ground that separates horses quickly. On Redcar's wide, straight track, there's nowhere to hide — horses with a clean, economical action will travel well on top of the ground, while anything that needs a bit of give to show its best will find the going an uncomfortable experience by the back end of the evening.

The course and distance markers become even more significant on fast ground. A horse that has already won at Redcar has proven it can handle the track's particular demands — the long run-in, the slight undulations, the way the ground can ride faster on the stands side in dry weather.
