Sandown Serves Up Sunday Spectacular
What a cracking afternoon we've had at Sandown Park! The Esher venue delivered exactly the kind of quality National Hunt action that makes Sunday racing such a treat. With good ground underfoot and a seven-race card packed with competitive contests, this was the perfect antidote to any weekend blues.
The feature attraction was undoubtedly the Mid Warwickshire Cleaning Supplies Mares' Handicap Hurdle, a proper Class 4 affair that brought together some seriously talented fillies and mares. But across the entire Sandown Park racecard, there were stories unfolding and future stars announcing themselves.
Mares Take The Spotlight
The afternoon's centrepiece mares' handicap hurdle was an absolute belter on paper, and it didn't disappoint in the flesh. Max of Stars topped the weights at 117 with Danny McMenamin doing the steering, but this was no one-horse race.
The Danny Mullins-trained Jaminska looked a proper player at 115, especially with Ciaran Gethings keeping the ride. This mare has been knocking on the door in similar company, and Sandown's stiff finish could have played right into her hands.
But the one that really caught my eye was Fromheretoeternity for the Sean Quinlan yard. Rated 113 and carrying the colours with real purpose, this mare has been showing progressive form and looked ready to take another step forward.
The betting ring was buzzing with talk of La Marquise too. Gavin Sheehan's mount at 111 has been thereabouts in decent company, and the Sandown track often suits these staying types who can grind it out up the hill.
Novice Chasers Show Their Class
The Geely Leamington Spa Novices' Handicap Chase was the pick of the jumping contests, and what a field they assembled! Bond Broker and Mister Cessna both came in rated 122, setting up a proper head-to-head between two progressive chasers.
Jay Tidball's partnership with Bond Broker has been one to follow this season, and this horse has been improving with every run over fences. The step up in trip looked ideal, and Sandown's challenging fences would have sorted the wheat from the chaff.
Mister Cessna under Jack Hogan was equally appealing. This one's been showing real class in novice company, and a mark of 122 suggests the handicapper is taking notice. These are exactly the type of progressive chasers that can find themselves in much better company come next season.
Don't overlook Pure Carbon either. Paul O'Brien's mount at 118 has been running with real credit, and often these slightly lower-rated runners can spring a surprise when the big guns don't fire.
Ones To Follow
Several horses caught the eye as potential ones to follow for future campaigns. In the opening mares' maiden hurdle, Hornica looked the class act on paper with a rating of 113. Beau Morgan in the saddle adds confidence, and this type of contest often produces future stars.
Yeld To Call was another from that opener worth noting. Rated 106 and partnered by Ciaran Gethings, this mare has the profile of one who could develop into a useful handicapper.
From the marathon 3m 2f handicap hurdle, keep Juggernaut on your radar. James Robottom's mount topped the weights at 100, and these staying types often come into their own as the season progresses. The experience of tackling Sandown's stamina-sapping test will have done him the world of good.
In the competitive 2m 2f handicap hurdle, Jet of Dreams looked well-treated at the weights. James Bowen's booking caught the attention, and this one has been running consistently without quite getting his head in front. A change of scenery to Sandown might have been just the ticket.
Jockey Watch
The jockey bookings told their own story throughout the afternoon. Ciaran Gethings had a strong book of rides, particularly on Jaminska and Yeld To Call, suggesting some shrewd stable confidence.
James Bowen was another catching the eye with quality mounts. His rides on Park Annonciade in the novice chase and Jet of Dreams in the 2m 2f handicap hurdle showed trainers are keen to secure his services for their better horses.
The presence of Gavin Sheehan on both Seahouses and La Marquise highlighted two potential improvers worth following in future outings.
Looking Ahead
This quality card at Sandown has thrown up several horses worth keeping on side for future campaigns. The mares who ran in the feature handicap hurdle will likely pop up in similar contests at tracks like Newbury and Kempton over the coming weeks.
The novice chasers from the Leamington Spa contest are ones to follow for the bigger prizes later in the season. Bond Broker and Mister Cessna, in particular, look like they could develop into proper staying chasers capable of competing in the better handicaps.
What made this afternoon special was the depth of quality throughout the card. From the opening maiden hurdle to the closing hunters' chase, there were stories unfolding and future stars announcing themselves. That's what Sunday racing at Sandown is all about – competitive action, progressive horses, and plenty to get excited about for the weeks ahead.
The good ground and testing track ensured we saw the horses at their best. Roll on the next quality card at this magnificent Surrey venue!
