Esher Delivers Despite The Elements

What a cracking afternoon we had at Sandown Park! The Surrey track might have been testing underfoot - soft going with good to soft patches - but the quality on show was anything but soggy. Seven races packed with intrigue, progressive types, and more than a few pointers for the Festival just around the corner.

The 'Roar Before Cheltenham' theme wasn't just marketing fluff either. This card had genuine substance, from promising juveniles taking their first steps over timber to seasoned campaigners fine-tuning their engines for the big dance in March.

Feature Race Fizzes With Quality

The standout contest had to be the Class 3 Challenger Two Mile Hurdle Series Qualifier at 3:20. What a field! Milldam heading the weights off 125 for Gavin Sheehan, with the ever-dangerous Let It Rain lurking just a pound behind for Harry Skelton.

But it was Mr McLoughlan who caught my eye in the pre-race paddock parade. Sam Twiston-Davies looked quietly confident aboard the 123-rated gelding, and you could see why. This one's been knocking on the door in better company, and the step back to this level could be the key.

Anyharminasking for Jonjo O'Neill Jr. was another who looked the part. The name might be a mouthful, but the form figures tell a story of consistent improvement. Off 122, he's got every chance of making his presence felt.

Juvenile Hurdle Throws Up Future Stars

The opening juvenile hurdle at 2:20 was pure gold for those with an eye on next season's novice division. Scarlet Moon arrived with a hefty 121 rating and Ben Poste in the saddle - that's a combination that demands respect.

But don't sleep on Both of Us and Forever Penywern. Both unrated but clearly fancied by connections to make their hurdling debuts here. When trainers bring unraced-over-hurdles types to a track like Sandown, they usually know something we don't.

Cloaks of Gold with David Bass was another eyecatcher. The 109 rating suggests room for improvement, and Bass doesn't often get the leg-up unless there's genuine optimism in the camp.

Steeplechase Action Heats Up

The 2:50 handicap chase served up a proper cavalry charge over two miles and change. Xcitations looked the one to beat on paper - Jack Andrews riding, 121 rating, and the kind of form that suggests he's ready to strike.

But In This World for Beau Morgan was trading well in the betting exchanges beforehand. The 116 mark might just underestimate this one's ability, especially on testing ground where his stamina can come into play.

Keep an eye on Non Stop too. Brendan Powell knows his way around Sandown better than most, and at 114, this one could be well-handicapped if the mood takes him.

Ones To Follow Forward

Several horses from this Sandown Park racecard are screaming 'follow me' for the coming weeks. Ballyhiho in the novices' handicap hurdle looked a class above his 95 rating suggests. Gavin Sheehan wouldn't be wasting his time on no-hopers.

From the bumper, Red Metal caught the eye. Brendan Powell aboard an unrated type in a decent field? That's notebook material right there. These National Hunt flat races are often where future stars announce themselves.

The hunters' chase threw up High Game Royal as one to keep on side. Mr Nicholas Romain in the saddle and a 115 rating that suggests serious ability. Point-to-point graduates often improve dramatically for their early rules appearances.

Looking Ahead - Festival Pointers Galore

Monday's action at Sandown has thrown up several horses who could be Cheltenham-bound if connections are feeling ambitious. The testing conditions were perfect preparation for what often awaits at Prestbury Park.

Those juvenile hurdlers will be ones to watch in the coming months - several looked like they could develop into serious novice hurdle contenders for next season's Festival. The handicappers from the feature race have given us genuine pointers for similar contests over the next few weeks.

What struck me most was the quality throughout the card. Even the smaller races had depth and competitive fields. That's what makes Sandown Park such a reliable guide to future form - horses have to earn their victories here.

Roll on the next meeting - if today was anything to go by, we're in for a treat as the season builds toward its crescendo!
