A Late Summer Afternoon in Somerset

There's something about a late August afternoon at Taunton that takes me right back to being about twelve years old, sitting on a tartan blanket with my dad, a bag of mint imperials between us, watching horses flash past in the golden West Country light. The season's winding down, the ground is fast underfoot, and there's that bittersweet feeling that summer is beginning to pack its bags. Lovely, really.

Well, today we've got six races to keep us warm on what shapes up to be a thoroughly decent Friday card. The going is reported as Good, Good (fast) in places, which is the kind of surface that puts a premium on horses who travel well and don't need soft ground to show their best. Pace will be key all afternoon, and anything that wants to come from off the pace will need to be sharp enough to pick up quickly. Keep that in mind as we work through the card. The Feature Race: The Frameclad Handicap Stakes (Class 2, 7f, £30k)

The 16:38 is the one that matters most today — a Class 2 handicap over seven furlongs worth £30,000 to the winner, and it's drawn fourteen runners who'd all fancy themselves on their day. This is proper handicap fare, the sort of race where the form book earns its keep.

Palmar Bay (Ralph Beckett, Callum Rodriguez) heads the weights on a mark of 99 and crucially holds a course and distance win to his name. On fast-ish ground like today's, Beckett's horses tend to travel beautifully and Palmar Bay looks the one they all have to beat. He's the kind of horse who does his best work when conditions are in his favour — and they are today.

Northern Express is eight years old and you might think the game has passed him by, but Michael Dods keeps this fellow in remarkable nick and he's a dual course and distance winner. At a mark of 97, he's not without a chance, and Connor Beasley knows him well. Don't be too quick to dismiss the old boy.

Invictus Gold (Tom Clover, Cieren Fallon) comes in off a mark of 98 without a course win to his name, but Fallon is in fine form and four-year-olds at this time of year often find a bit of improvement. He's one to keep onside each-way at least.

On the going front, the fast patches will suit the higher-rated, more athletic types. Anything with a tendency to get stuck in will struggle here. Palmar Bay gets my vote as the one to be on.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

14:13 — AJA Novice Amateur Jockeys' Handicap (7f 218y)

The opener is a lovely watch — amateur riders, a mix of ages and ratings, and the sort of race where anything can happen. I always enjoy these. The standout on paper is Sandret, the ten-year-old veteran trained by Sam England, who carries the [C,D] badge — meaning he's won at this course and over this distance. At ten, he's seen it all and done it all, and Mr Liam Baxter takes the ride. Experience counts in these amateur contests and Sandret's course knowledge could be the difference.

Hatamoto (Tim Easterby) is a three-year-old also showing [C,D] form, and Miss Rebecca Burley gets the leg up. Rated 62, he's competitive and the yard knows how to place a horse. Watch out for him.

Deep Sleep is the top-rated runner at 64, and Miss Ruby Criscuolo takes the ride for James Owen. No course or distance win, but the rating suggests raw ability. Could outclass the field if the race falls right.

Miss Alice Cooke rides Tropez Power for Mark Walford — a distance winner who shouldn't be ignored at 57, and Mr Jack Lander partners Tees George for Adrian Nicholls. Keep an eye on both.

15:25 — Caddick Construction EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (7f 218y, 2YO)

Fifteen two-year-olds, most unrated, and only Baarberini (James Horton, Daniel Muscutt, rated 75) and Mr Minz (Iain Jardine, Andrew Mullen, rated 74) bring any meaningful form figures to the table. On good-to-fast ground, the more experienced juveniles tend to hold sway, and Baarberini's rating makes him the one to side with. Michael Dods has four runners in here — Frontier Legend, Lion's Den, Persian Summer and Meccapulco — which suggests he fancies his chances with at least one of them. Worth keeping an eye on the market closer to post time for any stable confidence.

16:00 — Ivegate Building Handicap (Class 3, 6f, £18k)

Twenty runners over six furlongs is a proper cavalry charge and the fast ground will have them going at a real lick. Almost every runner holds a distance win, so we need to look elsewhere for an edge. Topwarrior (Ralph Beckett, Callum Rodriguez) tops the weights alongside several others on 90, but Beckett and Rodriguez have already teamed up in the feature race — could they do the double? Manila Scouse (Tim Easterby) is a [C,D] horse at 83 and David Allan knows this track well. In a wide-open race like this, each-way value might lie with the course specialists lower in the weights.

17:13 — Applebridge Group Handicap (Class 4, 1m 6f)

We close out the day over a mile and six furlongs — a proper stamina test that will separate the stayers from the pretenders. Pinatique (Sir Mark Prescott, Luke Morris) is top-rated on 85 and Sir Mark is a man who rarely runs a horse unless it's spot-on ready. Sax Appeal (Charlie Johnston, Callum Shepherd) on 84 is another with solid credentials, and Arrange — the old eight-year-old for Martin Todhunter — holds the only course and distance win in the field. Don't underestimate him. These long-distance handicaps have a habit of throwing up the most stubborn old campaigners.

Going Conditions: What It Means Today

Good ground with fast patches is as fair a surface as you'll get at this time of year. It rewards horses who are athletic, well-balanced and able to quicken — not those who need the mud flying. Across the card, look for horses who've shown form on quick ground previously, and be wary of anything that ran particularly well last time out on softer conditions. The seven-furlong trips that dominate today's card will be run at a solid pace, so front-runners will be under pressure late. Horses who can sit just off the pace and pounce in the final two furlongs are ideally suited.

Best Bets & Ones to Watch

  • Best Bet: Palmar Bay (16:38) — course and distance winner, top of the weights for a reason, and Beckett/Rodriguez is a potent combination on fast ground.
  • Each-Way Pick: Northern Express (16:38) — old he may be, but Dods keeps him flying and dual C&D form is hard to ignore.
  • Amateur Race Pick: Sandret (14:13) — ten years old and still knows his way around this track better than most. Liam Baxter gets a lovely spare ride.
  • One to Watch: Baarberini (15:25) — highest-rated juvenile in the EBF novice, and Muscutt is a polished operator on fast ground.
  • Staying Banker: Pinatique (17:13) — Sir Mark Prescott doesn't waste a journey, and Luke Morris is an underrated asset in these staying handicaps.

It's a lovely way to spend a Friday afternoon, all told. Six races, good ground, and a card that offers something for every type of punter — from the newcomer watching their first amateur race to the seasoned handicapper poring over the form for the Frameclad.
