The Stage Is Set at the Knavesmire

If you're not already buzzing about the York August Festival, the British EBF & Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes is about to fix that. Named in honour of the legendary trainer who shaped a generation of Classic winners, this Listed contest over 1m 3f 188y has long served as a proper test of staying quality for fillies and mares — and the 2026 renewal, worth a cool £100,000, is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in years.

Fifteen runners declared. Good to good-to-soft ground. The whole course terra-spiked since the last meeting. This is serious business on the Knavesmire, and with the cream of British and Irish training talent saddling runners, the atmosphere in the paddock at 16:10 on Thursday is going to be electric. Strap yourself in.

The Key Contenders

Morrophore (Gosden / Ryan Moore) — The One To Beat

Let's not dance around it — Morrophore is the standout name in this field. Rated 105, she towers above her rivals on official figures, and the combination of John & Thady Gosden sending her out with Ryan Moore in the saddle from stall 8 sends every signal you need. A five-year-old mare with experience and class, she's the kind of horse who turns up at Listed level and simply takes over. Moore rarely wastes a journey to York, and if she's fit and firing, the rest are running for the places. The draw in stall 8 is beautifully central — no worries there.

Rhapsody (Haggas / Marquand) — Course Form Is Gold Dust

William Haggas has been raiding York all summer and Rhapsody arrives here with a course winner flag that demands serious respect. Rated 102 and drawn in stall 7, Tom Marquand gets the leg-up on a four-year-old filly who clearly loves this track. Course form at York is not just a nice bonus — it's often the difference between a horse who handles the undulations and one who doesn't. Haggas trains his fillies with tremendous care, and Rhapsody looks primed for a big run. She's the most natural danger to the favourite.

A La Prochaine (Beckett / James Doyle) — The Three-Year-Old Wildcard

Ralph Beckett has a wonderful record with progressive fillies at this level, and A La Prochaine arrives as the most interesting of the three-year-olds. Rated 101 — exceptional for a filly of her age in this company — she carries the 9lb age allowance and gets in on 9-0. James Doyle is a jockey who reads a race beautifully over a staying trip, and stall 2 gives her a clean run from the off. If she's been pointed at this race with purpose, Beckett won't have brought her without believing she can compete. Watch the market move on this one.

Vauntingly (J.P. O'Brien / Dylan Browne McMonagle) — Irish Raider With Serious Pedigree

Joseph Patrick O'Brien has quietly become one of the most dangerous trainers to oppose when he sends a filly across the water for a British Listed race. Vauntingly, wearing a tongue tie and ridden by the brilliant Dylan Browne McMonagle, is rated 98 and drawn in stall 4 — a lovely low draw. Three-year-olds with a tongue tie often show a sharper, more focused performance, and McMonagle has the tactical intelligence to get the best out of a filly over this trip. Don't sleep on the Irish raiders.

Club Class (Fanshawe / Marco Ghiani) — Distance Winner Demands Respect

James Fanshawe is a trainer who picks his spots carefully, and Club Class carries the distance winner flag into this race — she's proven over this sort of trip and that matters enormously in a staying contest. Marco Ghiani takes the ride from stall 12, which is the widest of the main contenders, and that's a slight concern on ground that's good to soft in places. Rated 98 and wearing a tongue tie, she's a filly who knows how to get the job done over this distance. Fanshawe rarely runs horses out of their depth at this level.

Without Prejudice (Gosden / William Buick) — The Unknown Quantity

Here's the intrigue. Without Prejudice carries no official rating — she's unraced or lightly raced enough that the handicapper hasn't got to her yet — but John & Thady Gosden have sent her out with William Buick on board from stall 13. When Gosden and Buick team up on a filly with no public rating in a £100k Listed race, you pay attention. This could be a horse they've been quietly preparing for exactly this moment. The unknown is always dangerous.

Going, Draw and Conditions

The ground is described as Good, Good to Soft in places, with the whole course terra-spiked since the last meeting. The home straight readings from the far side show a GoingStick reading of 6 — that's on the better side of good, but with some give in places. This is a surface that rewards horses with a proper action and genuine stamina. Horses who like to get their toe in will be suited; those who want quick ground might find it a fraction more testing than ideal.

On the draw, the field splits across 15 stalls. The central draws — stalls 5 through 10 — look the most desirable over this trip at York. Morrophore (8) and Rhapsody (7) sit beautifully. The low draws like A La Prochaine (2) and Vauntingly (4) are fine over this distance. The wider draws — Club Class (12), Without Prejudice (13), Summerson (14) and Capichera (15) — will need a slightly wider passage but over 1m 3f 188y, it's not a dealbreaker. Pace and stamina will ultimately tell the tale.

Value Picks and Dangers

The danger to the market leaders comes from a few interesting directions:

  • Perfect Your Craft (P. Twomey / W. J. Lee) — another Irish raider, rated 97, a distance winner drawn in stall 3. Twomey is quietly excellent and this filly's proven trip form makes her a live each-way shout at likely bigger prices.
  • K Sarra (Beckett / Rossa Ryan) — Beckett's second string rated 97, wearing blinkers from stall 6. Blinkers can sharpen a filly up considerably, and Beckett rarely plays second fiddle with his own runners. Interesting.
  • Prizeland (Balding / Oisin Murphy) — Oisin Murphy doesn't need an introduction. Rated 94 but a distance winner, and Murphy has a genius for conjuring performances from three-year-old fillies on big days. Don't dismiss her at a price.

For genuine value, Perfect Your Craft appeals most. The Irish form is strong, the trip is proven, the draw is ideal, and Twomey clearly has her travelling well enough to make the journey. She could outrun her odds significantly.

Our Selection: Morrophore — With Rhapsody Each-Way

There's no getting away from it. Morrophore is our headline selection. A rating of 105 in a field where the next best is 102 is a significant advantage, and with Ryan Moore steering her home from a perfect draw, the Gosden team have set this up beautifully. She's the class act in the race and should take all the beating.

For the each-way play, Rhapsody is the one. Course form, a top handler, Tom Marquand in brilliant nick — she's the filly most likely to give Morrophore a proper race and could easily hit the frame at rewarding odds.

Who is the favourite for the British EBF & Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes 2026?

Morrophore, trained by John & Thady Gosden and ridden by Ryan Moore, is expected to head the market as the highest-rated runner in the field at 105. Her combination of class, experience and the Moore booking makes her the one all rivals will need to beat.

Is York a good track for three-year-old fillies in the Galtres Stakes?

Absolutely. Three-year-olds receive a 9lb weight allowance against their older rivals in this race, and the Knavesmire's long, galloping straight suits progressive fillies who are still on the upgrade. In recent renewals, younger fillies with strong form have often outperformed their ratings. A La Prochaine and Vauntingly both look exciting prospects.

How does the going affect the Galtres Stakes at York?

The Good to Good-to-Soft ground with the course terra-spiked is ideal for a staying test. It rewards genuine stamina and a smooth, ground-eating action. Horses who have previously won on similar ground — or who come from yards known for preparing stayers — will have a significant edge. Avoid backing anything that needs quick, rattling-fast ground on this occasion.
