A Proper Test of Three-Year-Old Fillies
Right, settle in lads because we've got ourselves a cracking little puzzle to solve at York on Friday afternoon. The Sky Bet Fillies' Stakes might not have the razzmatazz of some of the bigger prizes, but don't let that fool you - this Listed contest has been throwing up some serious talent over the years, and this renewal looks no different.
Seven fillies line up for what should be a proper test over seven furlongs and change, with the going described as Good (Slow) after the course received some vertical draining. That's music to my ears - proper racing ground that'll separate the wheat from the chaff, and no mistake.
The Market Leaders Under the Microscope
Pacific Mission arrives as the one they'll all have to beat, carrying a hefty 109 rating that puts her streets ahead of this lot on paper. Andrew Balding's filly has Colin Keane doing the steering, and you don't get much better than the Irishman when it comes to tactical nous. The tongue-tie goes on for the first time though, which could be telling - either she's been showing signs of hanging or not settling, or Balding's looking for that extra gear. Either way, it's worth noting.
Act of Kindness represents the Godolphin juggernaut under Charlie Appleby, and with William Buick in the plate, you know they mean business. That 101 rating suggests she's no mug, and Appleby's three-year-old fillies have been in flying form this season. The draw in stall two gives her options, and Buick will know exactly where he wants to be when the whips are cracking.
The Gosden father-and-son team wheel out two runners here, with Fashion People and So Regal both carrying their hopes. Fashion People gets the nod from James Doyle, while So Regal has Daniel Tudhope aboard and crucially carries the 'distance winner' flag. In a field this competitive, that experience at the trip could prove vital.
The Dark Horses and Value Plays
Now here's where it gets interesting, because I've got my eye firmly fixed on Lilt from the William Haggas yard. No rating published yet, which means she's either been disappointing or she's a lightly-raced sort who could be anything. With Tom Marquand keeping the ride and Haggas sending her here, I'm leaning towards the latter. The draw in stall one isn't ideal, but Marquand's not afraid to make his own luck.
Botagoz for Roger Varian is another who shouldn't be dismissed lightly. That 96 rating puts her in the mix, and Ray Dawson has been riding with real confidence lately. Varian's three-year-olds often improve significantly as the season progresses, and this could be the day we see a step forward.
Synchronicity completes the field for Ed Walker, another with no published rating but Kieran Shoemark keeping faith. Walker's been having a decent season, and while she's drawn widest of all in stall seven, that might not be the worst place to be if the pace is strong early on.
Going and Draw Analysis - The Tactical Picture
The Good (Slow) going after the vertical draining is absolutely crucial here. This isn't going to be a sprint from the gates - it'll reward stamina and those who can quicken off a strong pace. The draw doesn't look particularly decisive over this trip at York, but I do like Act of Kindness's position in stall two, giving Buick the chance to track the pace or make it if needed.
Pacific Mission in the middle of the field from four should be perfectly placed for Keane to work his magic, while So Regal's wide draw in seven might actually suit if Tudhope wants to come with one late run. The key will be the early pace - if it's genuine, we could see a right old battle in the final furlong.
Who will win the Sky Bet Fillies' Stakes at York?
Right, here's where I nail my colours to the mast. Pacific Mission looks the obvious choice with that rating advantage, but I can't shake the feeling that the market might have this one wrong. That tongue-tie going on for the first time suggests all wasn't well last time, and sometimes when you're trying to solve problems, you create new ones.
My selection is Act of Kindness for Charlie Appleby. The Godolphin machine has been purring along nicely this season, Buick's tactical awareness is second to none, and that 101 rating might just underestimate her on this ground. The draw gives her options, and Appleby doesn't send them to Listed races unless he thinks they can win them.
For the value hunters, Lilt at what should be decent odds makes plenty of appeal. Haggas and Marquand don't mess about, and that lack of a published rating could be hiding a smart sort ready to announce herself on the big stage.
What are the key factors in the Sky Bet Fillies' Stakes?
The going will be absolutely crucial here - that Good (Slow) surface after draining will favour those with stamina and a turn of foot. Don't be fooled into thinking this is just about raw speed over seven furlongs. The tactical element will be huge too, with the jockeys needing to judge the pace perfectly to be in the right place when it matters.
Which trainer has the best chance in this Listed contest?
Charlie Appleby's record in these sorts of races speaks for itself, and Act of Kindness looks to have everything in her favour. But don't sleep on William Haggas - he's a master at getting his three-year-olds to peak at the right time, and if Lilt is half as good as I suspect she might be, we could be in for a shock. The Gosden team always demands respect too, particularly with So Regal's proven stamina for the trip.
