Towcester Does It Again
Good ground, a full card, and the kind of summer National Hunt racing that reminds you why you fell in love with the jumps in the first place. Towcester put on a show on Wednesday afternoon, and if you weren't there — or at least watching from the sofa — you missed a treat.
Seven races across a full afternoon session, with soil moisture sitting at a healthy 53 and the going officially Good. That's the sweet spot for this track. The undulations of Towcester's circuit reward horses with a genuine engine, and today's card had plenty of those. From the opening mares' maiden hurdle all the way through to the bumper under the lights, there was barely a dull moment.
Grab a pint, pull up a chair, and let's run through the day that was.
The Feature: Sony Bill Steals the Show
Let's be honest — the moment Sony Bill was declared for the Bravo Benefits Celebrations Novices' Limited Handicap Chase over three miles, this became the race of the day. Off a mark of 135 and partnered by the brilliant Harry Cobden, this was always going to be the standout contest on the Towcester racecard.
A Class 3 with £11,700 in prize money and GBB Race status to boot — this was no ordinary mid-week filler. The opposition was no pushover either. La Pinsonniere (James Bowen, 127) is a mare who knows her way around a track, while Sunray Shadow — trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by the ever-reliable Harry Skelton off a mark of 125 — was always going to make Sony Bill work for it.
Samuel Spade (Beau Morgan, 124) completed a four-runner field that, on paper, looked like it belonged at a much bigger stage. Three miles around Towcester in July on good ground is a serious test, and with Cobden in the saddle, Sony Bill carried the weight of expectation as well as the top weight. The kind of race that gets the pulse racing before the tape even goes up.
Ones To Follow — Mark These Down
Every good card throws up a few horses worth sticking in the notebook, and today was no different. Here's who caught the eye:
- Lipstick Traces (Callum Bewley, rated 96) — The highest-rated runner in the opening mares' maiden hurdle, and a horse that's clearly been placed with care here. If she runs to her mark against some unexposed rivals, she's the one to beat. Watch for where she goes next — a handicap mark is surely on the horizon.
- Character Testing (Jamie Hamilton, rated 94) — Top-rated in the novices' limited handicap hurdle and partnered by the in-form Hamilton. Horses like this who sit at the ceiling of the weights in a Class 5 often have the engine to go up in grade. One for the tracker.
- Ask A Sainte (Sean Bowen, rated 107) — Course and distance form, ridden by Sean Bowen, and in a competitive Class 4 hurdle. The C,D flags next to a horse's name always make the ears prick up. Bowen doesn't take rides for fun, and this one looks nicely placed.
- Pep Talking (Gavin Sheehan, rated 114) — Course and distance experience in the Alfie Flatt Birthday Chase, and Sheehan is a jockey who thrives when he knows the track. This ARC Summer Chase Series Qualifier adds an extra layer of intrigue — connections won't be here just to make up the numbers.
- Redbarn (Harry Skelton, rated null) — A bumper horse with course form and Skelton on board. Dan Skelton's yard has been firing all summer, and when Harry takes a bumper ride at a midweek meeting, it's worth sitting up and taking notice. One for the future.
Jockey Watch — A Stellar Roster for a Wednesday
You don't often see this quality of jockey talent assembled for a mid-July card at a track like Towcester, and that alone tells you something about the quality of horses on show today.
Sean Bowen was the busiest man in the weighing room, saddling up in no fewer than four races — including the feature novice chase on Sony Bill's race card and a ride on Kayla's Friend in the mares' handicap hurdle. When Bowen is riding at this frequency on a single card, you follow him. Simple as that.
Harry Skelton and Harry Cobden both made the trip to Northamptonshire, which tells you connections believe they've got horses worth the journey. Cobden on Sony Bill is the headline act, but Skelton's double-header — Fine Thing in the opener and Sunray Shadow in the feature — shows the Skelton yard means business even in the summer months.
Jack Tudor had three rides across the afternoon and is a jockey rapidly building a reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in the weighing room. Keep watching him — he's going places.
And spare a thought for Isabelle Ryder and Miss Megan Bevan, two riders who bring genuine talent to the plate and deserve every opportunity they get. The sport is richer for having them in it.
Looking Ahead — Where Do These Horses Go Next?
The summer jumps calendar is packed, and several of today's runners look set for bigger things before the season turns.
Sony Bill, depending on how today went, has to be a contender for something more prestigious in the autumn. A horse rated 135 running in a Class 3 novice chase in July is either being freshened up or sharpened — either way, watch the entries over the next few weeks.
The ARC Summer Chase Series Qualifier angle on the 16:18 is worth flagging. Pep Talking and Theonlywayiswessex (Tom Bellamy) both carry course and distance form, and if either ran well today, the series final could be the next port of call. That's a race worth monitoring.
In the bumper, Downtown Nashville (Sean Bowen) and Stand Proud (Harry Cobden) are names to file away. Bumper horses ridden by top jockeys in July often resurface in novice hurdles come October and November — and by then, the form from today's card could look a lot stronger.
Keep an eye on the Towcester entries over the coming weeks. This course has a habit of producing horses that go on to bigger and better things, and today's card had the feel of one where several futures were quietly being shaped.
Final Verdict — A Wednesday to Remember
Towcester delivered exactly what summer National Hunt racing should — competitive fields, quality jockeys, and enough talking points to keep the pub debate going well into the evening. The Towcester racecard was a proper one from top to bottom, and if you're building your notebook for the season ahead, today gave you plenty of ammunition.
Sony Bill was the name on everyone's lips, the Skelton-Cobden rivalry in the feature was box office, and the bumper threw up more than a few intriguing prospects for the months ahead. Towcester on a summer Wednesday — don't ever let anyone tell you it's just a filler card. Today proved otherwise.
See you at the next one.
