Towcester Serves Up Thursday Treat
What a cracking afternoon's sport we witnessed at Towcester on Thursday! The Northamptonshire track laid on a proper feast of National Hunt action with seven races that had everything - from promising novices taking their first steps over timber to seasoned campaigners battling it out in competitive handicaps.
The good ground played its part perfectly, allowing the speedier types to show their true colours while still providing enough give for the stamina-laden stayers. With soil moisture sitting pretty at 57, conditions couldn't have been more ideal for this quality card.
Harry Skelton and Sean Bowen were the jockeys catching the eye throughout the afternoon, both riding with their trademark tactical brilliance. When these two are in the saddle, you know you're in for a show!
Novice Hurdles Set the Standard
The opening Racing to School 25 Years Novices' Hurdle got pulses racing from the off. Loriko, carrying the burden of a 121 rating, had Harry Skelton's tactical nous to rely on over the extended mile and seven furlongs.
But it was the unrated quartet that really caught the attention. Biggles looked every inch a horse going places under Stan Sheppard's patient handling, while Minella Blizzard showed the kind of raw ability that gets trainers excited about winter campaigns.
The longer novice event over two miles and seven furlongs proved even more revealing. Coumeenoole, another Skelton ride rated 121, faced stiff opposition from Executive Producer and the progressive-looking Presentandcorrect.
Stavanger Rose, with just a 90 rating, looked like she had plenty more to offer under Tabitha Worsley's confident ride. This filly screams 'one to follow' - mark the name down now!
Handicap Hurdle Thriller Steals the Show
The Nourkrin Handicap Hurdle was the race of the day - no question about it! What a competitive heat this turned out to be, with eight runners all holding legitimate claims on today's racecard.
Noble Birth and Secret Trix, both rated 120, went head-to-head in a thrilling finish that had the crowd on their feet. Brendan Powell on Noble Birth and Sean Bowen aboard Secret Trix put on an absolute masterclass in race-riding.
Tiger Orchid couldn't quite bridge the gap despite Charlie Hammond's best efforts, but this 116-rated performer looked like the handicapper might have him spot on for his next outing.
Further back, Mammies Boy caught the eye with a staying-on effort that suggests stepping up in trip could unlock significant improvement. Kielan Woods gave him a peach of a ride, and this one's definitely going in the notebook for future reference.
Mares' Chase Provides Quality Entertainment
The JMI Planning Mares' Handicap Steeplechase over three miles was pure class from start to finish. As an ARC Summer Chase Series Qualifier, this race carried extra significance, and the four-runner field didn't disappoint.
That's Nice, with Harry Cobden in the plate, looked every inch a mare with a big future over fences. Her 117 rating suggests she's already well-regarded, but there looked to be plenty more in the tank.
Regal Renaissance and Sean Bowen formed a potent combination, with the mare's 113 rating potentially underestimating her true ability on this evidence. I Am The Moon, despite being rated just 102, ran with the heart of a lion under Sam Twiston-Davies.
Queens Wish, the lowest-rated at 95, proved that ratings don't always tell the full story. Robert Dunne coaxed a performance from her that suggests she could be competitive in similar company throughout the summer.
Late Drama and Future Stars
The closing handicap hurdles provided their own excitement, with the Litholexal Handicap throwing up some interesting performances. Hillsin, despite carrying top weight, showed the kind of battling qualities that win races.
Saxon Cross looked progressive under Lee Edwards, while Pepite de Saphir ran with promise for Nathan Moscrop. These middle-distance handicaps often throw up improvers, and several caught the eye today.
The finale - the Quinnbet Handicap Hurdle - saw Lively Citizen and Zucayan both running with credit despite their 'D' penalties. Ask A Sainte looked particularly well-treated on his 100 rating and could be one to follow in similar contests.
Looking Ahead - Ones to Follow
Thursday's card at Towcester has thrown up several horses worth keeping on side for their next outings. Stavanger Rose tops the list - that 90 rating looks very workable, and Tabitha Worsley's confident ride suggested there's much more to come.
Mammies Boy is another for the tracker. His staying-on effort in the handicap hurdle suggests a step up in trip could unlock significant improvement. At 109, he looks well-treated for the right race.
From the mares' chase, That's Nice and Regal Renaissance both look like they could step up in class successfully. The ARC Summer Chase Series provides a perfect pathway for both.
What a day of racing we've witnessed! Towcester has once again proved why it's such a popular venue with both connections and punters. The quality of racing, combined with the competitive nature of every contest, made for compelling viewing from start to finish.
