Najidi Storm (Harry Charlton / Colin Keane) is rated 93 and comes with the added confidence of Colin Keane in the saddle — a jockey who doesn't tend to take rides he doesn't fancy on evenings like this. These two are clearly the form picks, but novice races have a wonderful habit of throwing up surprises.

Shadow Boxer, trained by Simon and Ed Crisford and ridden by Oisin Murphy, is unrated but the Crisford yard have had a fine season and Murphy doesn't need a rating to tell him whether a horse is good. If this one has been showing anything at home, it could outrun its unknown price. Worth a few pence each way for the braver punter.

The Amateur Riders' Race: 16:22 — A Lovely Opener

I have a genuine soft spot for amateur riders' races. There's a generosity of spirit about them — these are men and women who ride for the love of it, often juggling day jobs and riding out at sparrow's cough to get their chance in a proper race. The 16:22 over a mile and a furlong is a cracking little puzzle, and the [C,D] flags tell an interesting story.

Pursuit of Truth (Rebecca Menzies / Mr Thomas Easterby) tops the weights at a rating of 65 and carries those precious [C,D] letters — a course and distance winner. On standard going, that experience at Windsor over this exact trip is worth its weight in gold. Easterby is a capable amateur and Menzies sends her horses out fit. This is the obvious starting point.

Stipulation (Mark Loughnane / Mr Jack Loughnane) is a family affair — trainer and jockey sharing a surname — and also carries the [C,D] badge. There's something endearing about a father-and-son (or close family) combination, and they clearly know this horse well enough to bring it back to a track and trip it has already won on. At a rating of 58, the handicapper has given it a chance.

Harbour Vision deserves a mention simply for being an eleven-year-old who still turns up and competes. Eleven! Also a [C,D] horse, which means this old boy has been winning at Windsor over this trip at some point in his long and presumably eventful career. Don't write him off entirely — horses like this often know their way around a track better than their young rivals.

Keep an eye too on Baloo's Blues (Charles Hills / Mr James Hills) — another family partnership, and Hills is a yard that knows how to prepare a horse for an evening like this. Miss Charli Parker rides Star Start for Ruth Carr, while Mr Henry Callan takes the mount on No Knee Never and Miss Holly Thomson partners Popeye Doyle for Jessica Bedi — all worth a look in your racecard before you commit.

The 17:30 EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes (Class 3) over seven furlongs is a lovely race for the two-year-old fillies. Speed Nation (Simon & Ed Crisford / Oisin Murphy) arrives with a rating of 77 — the only rated runner in the field — and that experience edge could prove decisive. But Sir Mark Prescott's Appassionata is one to respect; Prescott rarely runs a horse until it's ready, and when it is ready, it tends to win.

In the 20:00 Class 5 sprint over five furlongs, Comic Strip (Crisford / Harry Davies) carries the [C,D] flag and a rating of 75. Five furlongs at Windsor on standard going suits a horse with pace and a clean action, and course and distance form is always worth respecting in a sprint. Nogo's Dream (Richard Hughes / Oisin Murphy) also holds [C,D] claims and Murphy is clearly having a busy evening — he rides in several races tonight, which tells you connections are confident.

The 20:30 Class 5 handicap over a mile and a furlong rounds off the card and looks competitive. Relentless Hero (Andrew Balding / Oisin Murphy) catches the eye — Balding is a trainer who excels at placing horses, and Murphy completing a big book of rides suggests he fancies his chances across the card.
