Standard Going Sets Up Nicely at Windsor
Right then, Saturday afternoon at Windsor and we've got seven races to sink our teeth into. The going's riding as standard after Wednesday's harrowing work, which should suit the speed merchants on this sharp track. Nothing fancy about today's conditions – just honest, fast ground that'll separate the wheat from the chaff.
The Windsor racecard is headlined by that £50k Lincoln Trial at 2:42, with a Listed contest thrown in for good measure. Seven races, plenty of punting opportunities, and enough form puzzles to keep us busy until the final furlong. Let's dive in.
Lincoln Trial Takes Centre Stage
The £50k BetMGM Lincoln Trial is the obvious feature – Class 2 over a mile and a bit with twelve runners scrapping it out. La Botte heads the weights on 104, and Harry Eustace's four-year-old has Jamie Spencer doing the steering. That's a combination that demands respect, especially with the horse fresh and ready to kick off his campaign.
But I'm drawn to Kingdom Come for Clive Cox. The seven-year-old is a Windsor specialist with course and distance form in the book, and Rossa Ryan knows him inside out. Rated 99, he's got just enough weight to be competitive without being overburdened. Cox has been quiet this winter, but his horses tend to come to hand quickly when the flat season gets going properly.
Two Tempting catches the eye at 100 in the ratings. Jonathan Portman's seven-year-old has distance form here and Rob Hornby takes the ride. At his age, he knows his job and won't need the run. The standard going will suit him down to the ground – he's always gone well on faster surfaces.
Lady Wulfruna Stakes Brings Listed Quality
The Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes at 3:15 is where the real class lies. Cool Hoof Luke tops the ratings on 108 for Andrew Balding, with Oisin Murphy aboard. That's a formidable combination, and the four-year-old should be cherry-ripe for his seasonal reappearance.
Marshman for Karl Burke is interesting at 107. The six-year-old has been knocking on the door in similar company, and Sam James has been riding with real confidence lately. Burke's string is in good heart, and this fellow has the course form to suggest Windsor suits him well.
Don't overlook Witch Hunter either. Richard Hannon's seven-year-old is course and distance proven, rated 105, and Joe Leavy knows the horse well. Sometimes these older campaigners can spring a surprise when the younger legs aren't quite firing on all cylinders yet.
Ones to Watch Across the Card
The opening 6f handicap at 2:05 looks competitive, but Cinque Verde for Tony Carroll appeals. The six-year-old is course and distance proven, rated 89, and Oisin Murphy takes the ride. That's significant jockey booking for what looks like a competitive sprint.
Billy Loughnane has some interesting rides today. Knebworth in the opener has distance form, while his mount in the Lincoln Trial, Superposition, could be overpriced at 92 in the ratings. Ed Dunlop's horses often come on for their first run, but this five-year-old might just be ready to go.
In the maiden at 3:50, it's basically a match between Claytons Kolatonic and Showcasing Star with Sintra ruled out. Rob Hornby on the Dominic Ffrench Davis runner gets the nod – the yard's been among the winners recently and Hornby doesn't take bad rides.
The lower-grade handicaps look trappy affairs, but Luke Morris on Rosieisme Darling in the 5:00 race catches the eye. The three-year-old is top-rated and has distance form. Sometimes it's that simple.
Best Bets and Final Thoughts
Kingdom Come in the Lincoln Trial is my main fancy. The course specialist should relish these conditions, Cox knows how to get them ready, and the price should be fair. He's got the form, the experience, and crucially, the course knowledge.
Cool Hoof Luke in the Listed race looks the class act, but the price might be prohibitive. Marshman could be the value alternative if you're looking for something with a bit more juice in the odds.
For the smaller races, Cinque Verde in the opener and Claytons Kolatonic in the maiden make appeal. Both have strong jockey bookings and represent yards in decent form.
Windsor on standard going should provide honest racing throughout the afternoon. The track's tight turns and short straight will favour the handy horses, and experience around here counts for plenty. Should be a cracking afternoon's sport.
Best Bet: Kingdom Come in the 2:42 Lincoln Trial – course specialist with the form and conditions in his favour.
