Royal Windsor Delivers Monday Magic
What a way to kick off the week! Windsor served up a proper feast of evening racing under the Berkshire lights, with seven races packed full of intrigue and some serious star power in the saddle.
The freshly harrowed track was riding a treat after Wednesday's maintenance work, and you could sense the anticipation building from the moment punters started filtering through the gates. This wasn't just your average Monday night affair – the quality of horse and rider on show here suggested we were in for something special.
From the opening fillies' handicap through to the marathon closer, every race had talking points. The jockey championship protagonists were out in force, with Hollie Doyle, Oisin Murphy, and Rob Hornby all looking to add to their tallies across multiple rides.
Feature Race Fireworks
The Sky Sports Fillies' Handicap at 7:30 was always going to be the evening's centrepiece, and boy did it live up to billing! A proper Class 4 affair over the extended mile, this one had Symbol of Majesty leading the charge off a mark of 86 under Robert Havlin.
But the real eye-catcher was the progressive look of this field. Estissa for Daniel Muscutt has been knocking on the door recently, while Morven represents the Edward Greatrex stable that's been among the winners lately. The handicapper's given these fillies some serious respect, but there's definitely more to come from several of them.
City Queen caught the eye too – Connor Planas taking the ride on a filly that's shown glimpses of real ability. At 82 in the ratings, she's got every chance of making her mark in better company before the season's out.
Novice Races Steal The Show
The two novice contests provided some of the evening's most compelling action. That Cavani Menswear Style Novice Stakes at 6:30 was absolutely loaded with potential – seven unrated runners all making their mark in a proper Class 4 contest worth ten grand.
Oisin Murphy climbing aboard Agamemnon immediately caught the attention, while Hollie Doyle's choice of American Psycho suggested connections fancy their chances. But it's Bill The Bull with Pat Cosgrave that's got the whisper – this one's been working like a dream at home.
The restricted novice at 7:00 was equally intriguing. Mountain Cat looked the part in the preliminaries, and with Murphy in the saddle again, you sensed this could be a significant winner. Roi de Coeur for Doyle has been talked up as a serious prospect too – one to keep on the right side of going forward.
Jockey Battles and Stable Stars
What a night for the weighing room elite! Hollie Doyle was the busiest of the lot with four rides across the card, showing just how much support she's getting from the major stables. Her book looked particularly strong, especially that Midnight Call ride in the opener and Roi de Coeur in the novice.
Oisin Murphy wasn't far behind with three quality mounts, including that intriguing Agamemnon debut and the well-fancied Mountain Cat. When Murphy's making the trip to Windsor on a Monday evening, you know there's serious prize money on offer.
Rob Hornby's treble of rides looked competitive too, particularly Little Jaybee in the fillies' opener and Najmet Minzaal in the novice. The man's riding with real confidence at the moment.
From a stable perspective, Edward Greatrex sent out a strong team with Smooth Silesie and Morven both fancied, while the Luke Morris-ridden runners looked particularly well-handicapped across the evening.
Ones To Follow and Future Stars
Several horses caught the eye as potential stars of tomorrow. That American Psycho newcomer in the novice looked the real deal in the preliminaries – any horse good enough to attract Hollie Doyle for their debut is worth following closely.
Symbol of Majesty in the feature race has all the hallmarks of a filly going places. Rated 86, she's clearly held in high regard, and with Havlin's experience in the saddle, this could be the start of a profitable campaign in better company.
Keep a close eye on Perfect Location in the 7f handicap too. David Probert's 70-rated runner has been working exceptionally well and looks ready to take a big step forward. The form of his recent efforts suggests he's well ahead of his current mark.
From the marathon closer, Free Speech looks a filly with a big future. Silvestre De Sousa wouldn't be making the journey for just any old runner, and at 73 in the ratings, she's got scope to develop into a pattern-class performer.
Looking Ahead
Tonight's action sets us up perfectly for what promises to be a cracking week of racing. Several of these winners will be heading to bigger and better things – don't be surprised to see some of tonight's stars popping up at the summer festivals.
The quality of horse on show here proves that evening racing is far from the poor relation it's sometimes painted as. When you get fields like these, packed with progressive types and ridden by the championship elite, Monday nights can be just as thrilling as any weekend showpiece.
Roll on the next Windsor evening card – if it's half as good as tonight's offering, we're in for another treat!
