A Friday Night at the Races — There's Nothing Quite Like It
My dad had a saying: "If you can't enjoy racing on a Friday evening in summer, you can't enjoy anything." He was, it has to be said, a man of simple pleasures — a pint of mild, a fiver each-way, and the sound of hooves on firm ground. He'd have loved tonight. Six races at one of the most charming little tracks in Britain, the sun hopefully still hanging in the sky over north Wales, and the weekend stretching out ahead of you like a blank betting slip. Bliss.
We're heading to Bangor-on-Dee this evening for a lovely card of flat racing, and if you've never been, put it on your list. It's a tight, left-handed track that winds along the River Dee, and it rewards horses who know what they're doing here — which is why you'll notice those [C] and [D] markers cropping up throughout the Bangor-on-Dee racecard and why I'll be paying close attention to them tonight.
The going is Good to Firm, Good in places, which is about as fair and honest a surface as you'll find. No excuses for anything tonight — the ground will suit the quick, athletic types, and horses who've shown they handle this track before will be at a real premium.
The Feature Race: Class 4 Sprint at 19:02
The richest race on the card is the Belazu Handicap Stakes at 19:02 — a Class 4 five-furlong sprint worth £12,700, and it's a proper little race. Nine runners, all with course form to varying degrees, and a ratings band that's beautifully compressed between 76 and 86. This is the kind of race where the draw, the going, and that [C,D] badge can make all the difference.
I'm Next (rated 86, David Allan, Tim Easterby) is the joint top-rated alongside Elegant Erin, and both carry those precious [C,D] flags — course and distance winners. At nine years old, Elegant Erin might prompt a few raised eyebrows, but Paul Midgley's mare has been a model of consistency around here and good to firm ground is exactly what she wants. Don't write her off on age alone.
I'm Next, though, is the one I keep coming back to. Tim Easterby knows this track well, David Allan is in fine form, and a horse rated 86 who has already won here over five furlongs on comparable ground has every right to go well. On ground this quick, you want horses who travel smoothly and don't need soft ground to show their best — and I'm Next ticks that box firmly.
Emperor Spirit (rated 83, Silvestre De Sousa) is another who holds course form, and De Sousa is never on a horse without a reason. Watch the market on this one. Hundred Caps for Julie Camacho also catches the eye — course and distance form, David Egan in the saddle, and at 77 could be slightly ahead of the handicapper if things fall right.
Apprentice Opener and the Young Riders to Watch
The card kicks off at 18:00 with the Your Weekend Starts Here Apprentice Handicap over a mile and four furlongs, and it's a lovely opportunity to watch some of the sport's next generation. Only five runners, but there's genuine intrigue here.
Sisterandbrother (rated 61, Taryn Langley) has both course and distance form — she's been around this track before and knows the job. At eight years old she's a wily old thing, and on ground she handles, she could be hard to peg back if she gets into a rhythm. Taryn Langley is a name to follow in the apprentice ranks, and rides with a confidence that belies her experience level.
Taylormade Lad is the top-rated at 63 and gets the nod from Rhys Elliott, who has been picking up some nice spare rides lately. The four-year-old from Michael Dods' yard is unexposed at this trip and could well find this distance well within his range on quick ground.
Havachoc (Cian Horgan) and Bruce Banner (Warren Fentiman) both carry distance form, and in a race this small, every runner has a shout. Keep an eye on Speechman ridden by William Pyle — rated just 49 but Philip Kirby rarely sends horses on long trips without purpose.
Two-Year-Old Fillies and a Selling Stakes Worth Watching
The IRE-Incentive EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes at 18:30 is always fascinating — two-year-old fillies over five furlongs, a mix of the experienced and the utterly unknown. Viking Barbie (rated 73, Billy Garritty, Ollie Sangster) is the only runner with a rating besides the non-runner Fast Track, and that experience edge matters at this level. Nightbloom (David Egan, Kevin Philippart de Foy) is the one I'd want to know more about — Egan doesn't ride maidens at evening meetings without thinking they've got a future, and de Foy has been producing some smart juveniles of late. Tropical Crown for K.R. Burke and Pierre-Louis Jamin is another who could be anything — Burke's two-year-olds tend to know their job on debut.
The Westwood Selling Stakes at 19:35 is a four-runner affair, and despite the selling tag, there's a curious ratings spread. Nepal (rated 88, Silvestre De Sousa, Ivan Furtado) is well clear at the top of the weights, and that rating in a seller screams potential gamble. De Sousa doesn't ride in sellers unless he fancies his chances — worth keeping a close eye on the market here.
Best Bets and Ones to Watch
To round things up, here are my picks for the evening — nothing too exotic, just honest assessments for the everyday punter looking to enjoy the card:
- Best Bet: I'm Next (19:02) — Top-rated, course and distance winner, in-form jockey and trainer combination. Good to firm ground suits. Hard to look past.
- Each-Way Shout: Elegant Erin (19:02) — Nine years old but utterly at home here. Course and distance form is rock solid and she's run well on this type of going before.
- Apprentice Race Pick: Sisterandbrother (18:00) — Knows the track, knows the trip, and Taryn Langley is a jockey on the way up. Each-way at a decent price could be rewarding.
- Wildcard: Nightbloom (18:30) — Unexposed two-year-old filly with a top jockey. Could be anything. Small interest each-way for the fun of it.
- Watch the Market: Nepal (19:35) — Rated 88 in a seller with De Sousa aboard. If money comes for this one, take note.
It's going to be a grand evening at one of racing's most underrated little venues. Whether you're there in person with a cold drink and a racecard, or following along from home, I hope it's a profitable and enjoyable one. My dad would have been there with his pint of mild. I'll be raising one in his honour. Good luck tonight — and enjoy your weekend.
