A Glorious Wednesday at the Dee
There are few more charming settings in British flat racing than Bangor-on-Dee on a warm summer's afternoon, and on Wednesday 12 August 2026 the old Welsh track put on quite the show. Six races, good-to-firm ground with just a hint of give in places, and a card that had something for everyone — from raw, unraced novices finding their feet to seasoned handicappers scrapping it out over seven furlongs. If you weren't there, you missed a treat. If you were, you already know.
The Bangor-on-Dee racecard was headlined by a Class 4 handicap worth £12,000, but the intrigue spread right across the afternoon. Let's break it all down.
The Feature: Jill Willows Handicap Stakes (15:45)
The Jill Willows Handicap Stakes over 7f 75y was the race of the day — and with eleven runners crammed into a Class 4 worth £12k, it had all the ingredients for a proper contest. The ratings spanned from 64 to 82, meaning this was a genuine puzzle for punters and trainers alike.
At the top of the weights, Alpha Capture (Conor Whiteley, 82) and Obelix (Jason Hart, 81) carried the burden of favouritism's expectations, with Bell Shot (Mason Paetel, 81) lurking dangerously just behind them on the same mark. These are horses that have shown they belong at this level — but on good-to-firm ground over this trip, the margins are razor-thin.
The one that really caught the eye beforehand was Glenfinnan, sent out by Daniel Tudhope on a mark of 78 and carrying the course-and-distance form flag. Tudhope is a rider who doesn't waste his time on no-hopers, and Glenfinnan's profile suggested a horse still on the up. Watch this space.
Style of Life (Ethan Tindall, 75) and Beyond The Bar (David Allan, 75) were the ones lurking just below the radar — horses rated in the mid-70s who, on their day, can make the principals look very ordinary indeed. In a race this competitive, those are exactly the types to get excited about.
Ones to Follow — The Novices and Maidens
The two EBF-restricted races early on the card were absolute gold mines for notebook horses, and if you weren't paying close attention, you may have missed something special.
14:15 — EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (5f)
Fourteen runners over five furlongs — pure, unadulterated speed. With a host of unrated runners mixing it with the likes of True Charm (Warren Fentiman, 70) and Lexington Boom (Oliver Stammers, 68), this was always going to be a lottery of sorts. But lotteries have winners, and on a sharp track like Bangor, raw pace and a clean break from the stalls can be worth a stone.
Tiggywinkle (Jason Hart) was one of the unrated runners that caught plenty of pre-race attention — the name might raise a smile, but there was nothing cute about the way connections have been talking about this one. Similarly, Classy Jaguar (Dougie Costello) is a horse worth scribbling down. Costello doesn't travel to Bangor for the scenery — when he makes the trip, he tends to mean business.
Scottys Rocket (Cam Hardie) was another intriguing debutant. Hardie is riding with tremendous confidence this season and his eye for pace over the minimum trip is well-documented. Any of these unraced types showing a big performance today will be worth following into nursery company later in the season.
14:45 — EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (7f 75y)
The step up in trip for the second race on the card opened things up nicely for horses with a bit more scope. Empire Rising (Sam James, 68) was the most experienced runner in the field on ratings, but it's the unraced sorts that generate the real buzz in races like this.
You Got Know How (Daniel Tudhope) — what a name, and what a booking. Tudhope riding a well-bred, unraced maiden over seven furlongs at Bangor is the kind of combination that makes you sit up straight. Coco Nova (Oisin Orr) was another with serious claims — Orr is a jockey in tremendous form and when he picks up a ride on an unraced type, it's rarely by accident.
Keep an eye on Cowgirl (Jason Hart) too. Hart had a busy book of rides across the card today, and trainers don't keep coming back to a jockey unless he's delivering. If Cowgirl ran with any promise, she's one to follow into nurseries or further maiden company.
The Sprint Handicaps — Speed Merchants on Show
Bangor's five-furlong straight is a proper test of raw speed, and the Nation Radio Yorkshire Handicap Stakes (16:45, Class 5) gave us eleven sprinters going hammer and tongs in the evening sunshine.
Straight Ahead (Clifford Lee, 75) was the top-rated runner and the one to beat on paper, but in a sprint handicap on good-to-firm, the draw and the early pace can make a mockery of the formbook. Angel Numbers (James Sullivan, 74) is a horse that has been knocking on the door in this grade and looked overdue a big run. Hanney Girl (David Allan, 73) carried course-and-distance form into the race — always a factor at a track as unique as this one.
The wildcard? Dragon Spin (Dougie Costello, 68). Costello again — and again, the booking demands respect. If Dragon Spin fires, don't be surprised to see connections aim high next time out.
The Staying Test and the Handicap Grind
The Cayenne Electric Handicap (16:15) over 1m 1f 207y was the stamina test of the afternoon — and on good-to-firm ground, it was always going to favour the horses with a smooth, economical action. Bearwith (Tom Kiely-Marshall, 70) and Ciao Capo (Oisin Orr, 70) shared top weight and both arrived with the kind of form that suggested they'd be competitive.
No Knee Never (Clifford Lee, 69) is a horse with a fantastic name and, more importantly, a profile that suggests he's capable of winning off this sort of mark. Lee has been in cracking form and this looked a race set up for him to shine.
Meanwhile, the ClearAnswer Call Centres Handicap (15:15, Class 6) over 7f 75y was the grind of the afternoon — fourteen runners, tight ratings, and a field full of horses trying to find their level. Willowinghurn (Daniel Tudhope, 55) was the one that stood out as potentially well-handicapped, and with Tudhope in the saddle, he's never without a shout.
The Verdict — A Day Well Worth Watching
Bangor-on-Dee served up everything you'd want from a summer Wednesday card — competitive racing, intriguing novices, and enough notebook horses to keep you busy for the next few weeks. The feature Jill Willows Handicap was the headline act, but the real value was in those early EBF races where tomorrow's stars were potentially taking their first steps today.
If you're building a notebook for the back end of the flat season, Glenfinnan, Coco Nova, You Got Know How, Classy Jaguar and Dragon Spin are all names worth circling. These are horses that could be popping up at York, Chester, or Haydock before the season is out — and you'll want to be ahead of the market when they do.
