Brighton on a Summer Friday — Sure Why Not?
Look, I'll be honest with you. When the fixtures list throws up a National Hunt card at Brighton in late June, your first instinct is to raise an eyebrow and reach for another pint. But here we are, six races over timber and fences on Good ground on a Friday afternoon, and there's plenty to get stuck into if you know where to look. The Brighton racecard today is a proper mixed bag — novice hurdlers finding their feet, mares doing their thing, and a couple of staying chases that'll sort the men from the boys. Good ground suits a clean jumper and a horse that travels well, so keep that in mind as we work through the card.
Six runners or fewer in half the races tells you something about the time of year, but thin fields can throw up value if you're paying attention. Let's get into it.
Feature Race: The Lakes Luxury Loo's Handicap Chase (15:50)
The feature by prize money and class is the 3m 1f 107y handicap chase at 15:50, worth £9,300 and run under GBB conditions. It's a proper staying test around here, and with a Non Runner already declared for Ivane, we're down to six. Now, I don't care what the race is sponsored by — when you've got a field rated between 107 and 121 going three miles over fences on Good ground, you've got yourself a race worth watching.
Caughtinyourtrance (7yo, rated 121) is the top weight and carries the [C] course form flag, which matters. Brian Hughes is in the saddle for James Moffatt, and this yard has been quietly ticking over nicely. On Good ground over this trip, a horse that's already proven it handles the track is a serious advantage. He's the one they all have to beat.
But I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't wave a flag for Fairlawn Flyer (10yo, rated 115). Course and distance form [C,D] — that's the full house, ladies and gentlemen. Sean Bowen picks up the ride for Mickey Bowen's yard, and when that man gets on a horse that knows its way around a track, you sit up and take notice. He's 6lb lower than Caughtinyourtrance at the weights, he's done it here before at this trip, and Good ground is exactly what a horse like him wants. Each-way at the very least.
Red Happy (9yo, rated 120) for George Bewley with Jonathon Bewley up is another who deserves respect at the top of the handicap. A family operation, and those tend to be well-motivated. He's right there on ratings, but without the course form, I'd put him just behind the other two in my thinking.
Key Runners Across the Card
14:18 — The RF Miller & Co Novices' Hurdle
The opening novices' hurdle over 2m 6f is already reduced to five runners after Non Runner takes the place of Drumconnor Hill in the Collins yard. Loch Cuan for Gordon Elliott is the one that jumps off the page — course and distance form [C,D] on a 5yo trained by one of the most decorated jumps trainers on the planet. Sean Bowen takes the ride and he doesn't get on many bad things. On Good ground over this trip, this looks like a penalty kick for the top yard. The others will need to bring something extraordinary to the party.
James Davies partners Dream Racer for Gary Hanmer — a 4yo stepping into 2m 6f novice hurdle company. It's a big ask for a young horse, but Davies is an underrated rider who extracts every ounce, and if the handicapper hasn't caught up with this one yet, watch out. At the prices, worth a small each-way interest.
14:48 — The Hadwins Mares' Handicap Hurdle
Ten mares go to post over 2m 6f and the one who catches my eye is Belles Benefit (10yo, rated 97) for Ben Case. She's got the [C,D] badge — course and distance winner — and at a decade old, she's as streetwise as they come. Harry Bannister knows what he's doing, and on Good ground at a track she clearly loves, she's overdue a big run. Don't let the age fool you — some mares just keep on giving.
Gerrys Wish (5yo, rated 96) for Gordon Elliott with Sean Bowen aboard is the yard's second runner of the day and Elliott doesn't send horses over from Ireland for the fresh air. Rated 96, she's unexposed enough to be interesting, and Bowen will have her travelling sweetly on this ground.
Mr Dara McGill takes the ride on Turkey And Ham for the Noel C. Kelly yard — the Kelly operation has runners dotted throughout this card, and McGill is clearly the stable's go-to man today. Turkey And Ham is rated 94 and while she's not the most fashionable name in the race, never dismiss a trainer who's clearly had a productive morning filling out declarations.
15:18 — The Molson Coors Novices' Handicap Chase
Down to five after Back In The Bay is withdrawn, and Settle Down Jill (6yo, rated 111) is the class act here for Tristan Davidson with Harry Reed up. Top-rated by a distance, and on Good ground over 2m 5f, a 6yo novice chaser with a clear ratings edge should be taking care of business. Mr Dara McGill rides Justicialism for Kelly — rated 103, he's 8lb off the top, and if Settle Down Jill has an off day, this one could mop up.
16:23 — The Holker Homes Handicap Chase
Judicial Review (8yo, rated 84) has [C,D] form — course and distance winner — and Brian Hughes sticks with him for Moffatt. In a wide-open Class 5 with several non-runners thinning the field, course knowledge on Good ground could be the difference. Mr Oran McGill doesn't ride in this one, but keep an eye on him in the closer — he's been busy all day for the Kelly yard.
16:58 — The Amateur Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle
The closer is a cracking amateur jockeys' race with eleven declared. Lightening Company (8yo, rated 104) has [C,D] form for Ben Haslam, and Mr James Murray takes the ride — that's a horse who knows every blade of grass on this track. Mr Oran McGill is back out for Kelly aboard Garrick Painter (6yo, rated 105) — top-rated in the race and a 6yo with presumably more to offer. McGill has been riding with confidence today and if Kelly has him primed, he's the one to be on.
Going Conditions: Good Ground — Who Does It Suit?
Good ground in late June at Brighton is proper summer jumping ground — quick enough to reward a fluent jumper and a horse that travels, but not so fast that it becomes a sprint. Stamina pedigrees matter less than usual; what you want is a horse that pings its fences, settles into a rhythm, and has the engine to quicken when asked. Older, wiser horses with course form [C] are at a premium today — they know the undulations, they know the run-in, and they won't be spooked by the surroundings. Any horse that needs soft or heavy to show its best form can be safely crossed off your list this afternoon.
Best Bets & Ones to Watch
- BEST BET: Fairlawn Flyer (15:50) — Course and distance form, Sean Bowen up, 6lb well-in at the weights. Each-way minimum.
- NEXT BEST: Loch Cuan (14:18) — Gordon Elliott, Sean Bowen, [C,D] form. Should win this if right.
- EACH-WAY INTEREST: Belles Benefit (14:48) — A decade old and still knows her way around here better than most.
- WATCH: Garrick Painter (16:58) — Top-rated in the amateur's race, Kelly yard in cracking form all day, McGill in the saddle.
- DARK HORSE: Dream Racer (14:18) — James Davies on a 4yo with potential. Small each-way if the price is right.
That's your lot from me. Six races, Good ground, and enough intrigue to keep you off the flat racing for an afternoon. Check the full Brighton racecard for the latest market moves and any further non-runner updates before you part with your money. Good luck — you'll need a bit of it, as always.
