A Summer Evening in Cumbria — There's Nothing Quite Like It
My dad used to say that if you could only go racing once a year, you should make it an evening meeting in the north of England in July. I thought he was being sentimental. Then I went to one. The light hangs golden over the fells, there's the smell of something frying somewhere nearby, and nobody seems to be in a terrible hurry about anything. It's racing at its most human.
Cartmel does that better than almost anywhere. Tucked into a corner of the Lake District, it's the sort of place that makes you feel like you've stumbled into a secret. Tonight's six-race card kicks off at 17:51 and runs through to 20:46, and with the going reported as Good to Firm, conditions look ideal for some quick, clean racing. Check out the full Cartmel racecard before you fill your slip in.
Six races, a range of ages and distances, and a card that has something for every kind of punter. Let's walk through it together.
Feature Race: The bet365 GBB Restricted Maiden Stakes (18:26)
With a prize fund of £10,000 — comfortably the richest race on the card — the 18:26 maiden over 7f 16y is the one the trainers will have circled. It's a GBB Race restricted to Band D horses, which means these are lightly raced two-year-olds still finding their feet. Eight runners line up, and most of them are unrated, which makes this one delightfully tricky and wonderfully open.
Dakota Brave (Charlie Johnston / Rob Hornby) is the standout on official ratings, coming in at 68 — a clear mark above the rest of the field. Johnston is a trainer who knows how to place a horse, and Hornby is a jockey who won't waste the opportunity. On paper, this is Dakota Brave's race to lose.
But maiden races for two-year-olds have a habit of throwing up surprises, and several of the unrated runners here are completely unknown quantities. Boomshakalak — and yes, I did have to type that twice — runs for Zoe Hawkins with Kieran O'Neill in the saddle, while Temple Court represents the in-form yard of Eve Johnson Houghton. Keep an eye on Hailstones In May too, trained by Richard Hughes with Finley Marsh aboard — Hughes has a sharp eye for a two-year-old and doesn't send them out without a reason.
Selection: Dakota Brave to justify favouritism, but Hailstones In May each-way.
Key Runners to Watch Across the Card
Who Is Alice — 19:01 Handicap Stakes (Class 6, 7f 16y)
If there's one box you want ticked in a handicap, it's course and distance form. Who Is Alice carries both the [C] and [D] flags, meaning she has winning form at Cartmel and over this exact trip. Grace Harris trains her, and William Carson takes the ride. Rated 60 and top of the weights, she's not going to be easy to back at a big price — but in a Chepstow Mile Series Qualifier with only six runners, she has every right to go close. This is exactly the kind of race she's been placed for.
Bobby Dassler — 19:36 Handicap Stakes (Class 6, 1m 14y)
Now here's a horse with a name that makes you smile. Bobby Dassler, a seven-year-old for Barry Murphy, carries both the course and distance flags [C, D] into the 19:36 mile handicap. He's been around the block, this one — seven years old and still at it, which tells you something about his constitution if nothing else. Ryan Kavanagh rides, and while he's not the highest rated in the field (joint top on 56 with Nammos), his familiarity with the track could be the edge that matters on Good to Firm ground.
Just Typical — 20:11 Handicap Stakes (Class 6, 7f 16y)
Five runners in the penultimate race and Just Typical looks the one to beat. Trained by Ian Williams and rated 63 — nine pounds clear of most of the field — this five-year-old also carries the [D] flag for course form. Ryan Kavanagh doubles up here after Bobby Dassler, and with a small field and a decent rating advantage, this looks like a race where the form book should hold. Just Typical is the most straightforward selection on the card.
Quantum Swift — 17:51 Nursery Handicap (Class 6, 6f 16y)
We open proceedings with a two-year-old nursery handicap, and Quantum Swift catches the eye at the top of the weights. Trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Sean Levey — one of the classier jockey bookings on the card — Quantum Swift is rated 65 alongside Romidijo, but the Hannon-Levey combination lends this one a certain authority. Hannon sends horses a long way when he thinks they're ready, and Good to Firm ground on a sharp track should suit a quick two-year-old.
Denby's Dream — 19:36 Handicap Stakes
Worth a mention in the mile handicap is Denby's Dream, a three-year-old for Charlie Pike carrying the [D] flag. Top-rated in the race at 58, and with youth on his side in a field that includes horses as old as nine, he could have the legs of this lot if the pace is strong. Harry Vigors takes the ride.
How the Going Plays Into Things
Good to Firm is the going we've got, and at a sharp track like Cartmel, that matters. The course rewards horses that travel well and quicken cleanly — you don't want a horse that needs soft ground to get his head down and grind. On fast ground, the premium is on horses with natural speed, good action, and ideally some proven form at the track.
That's why the [C] and [D] flags carry extra weight tonight. Horses like Who Is Alice, Bobby Dassler and Just Typical have already shown they handle Cartmel — and handling Cartmel on Good to Firm in July is a specific skill. The tight bends and undulating nature of the track can catch horses out, and experience here is worth a few pounds in the ratings.
For the two-year-old races, Good to Firm is generally fine — youngsters tend to handle faster ground well enough — but watch for any signs of greenness from the unraced runners in the maiden. A horse that's never seen a racecourse before can take a moment to settle, and on quick ground there's no time to waste.
Charles Bishop has four rides on the card tonight, and Callum Rodriguez saddles up three times. Both are worth following across the evening — when a jockey has multiple bookings at a smaller meeting, they've usually got a good feel for who their best chance is. George Wood rides Romidijo in the opener and Ajrad in the mile handicap — two very different assignments, but he's a capable handler of both.
Best Bets & Ones to Watch
- Best Bet: Just Typical (20:11) — Top-rated, course form, small field. Straightforward on paper.
- Each-Way Pick: Who Is Alice (19:01) — Course and distance winner, well placed by Grace Harris.
- Feature Race Selection: Dakota Brave (18:26) — Highest rated in the maiden, strong booking with Hornby.
- Each-Way Outsider: Hailstones In May (18:26) — Unknown quantity from a shrewd yard. Could be anything.
- One to Watch: Bobby Dassler (19:36) — Seven years old and still showing up at Cartmel. Respect the veteran.
It's a lovely evening card, and if you're anywhere near Cumbria tonight, I'd gently suggest you consider making the trip. If not, settle in with the telly and the Cartmel racecard and enjoy six races of honest, unpretentious flat racing. My dad would have loved it. Good luck out there — and as always, bet within your means and enjoy the ride.
