About Exeter
Nestled high on Haldon Hill, Exeter Racecourse is a jewel in the National Hunt calendar, boasting a rich history stretching back to at least the 17th century, making it one of the UK's oldest racing venues. As the highest racecourse in Britain, it offers breathtaking views across the Devon countryside, but more importantly, a truly demanding test for any horse and jockey. The track itself is a long, galloping, left-handed oval, characterised by its undulating terrain. Stiff climbs and descents throughout the circuit require immense stamina, while the well-built fences and hurdles demand precise jumping. It's often described as a 'proper' winter track, known for its excellent drainage and providing genuine heavy ground when conditions dictate. Many a future star has graced Exeter's turf, using it as a stepping stone to bigger things. Its flagship race is the Grade 2 Haldon Gold Cup, a thrilling two-mile one-furlong chase in November that consistently attracts top-class contenders and provides an early season highlight.
