A Fine Afternoon in Carmarthenshire
There are worse ways to spend a Tuesday in July than out at Ffos Las, and the horses certainly played their part today. Six races on good to firm ground — the going measured at a soil moisture of 44 — made for quick, competitive racing, and the Ffos Las racecard delivered more intrigue than you might expect from a midweek afternoon fixture in west Wales.
The ground was fair, the sun was out, and the racing was sharp. Let's get into it.
The Feature Race: EBF Maiden at 14:30
The Dandara Homes EBF Maiden Stakes over six furlongs was always going to be the race everyone was talking about before the off — and it didn't disappoint as a spectacle. With a £10,000 prize pot and GBB Race status attached, there was genuine quality on show and real reputations on the line.
All eyes were on Jaan Ki Tukri, sent off as the form horse of the race with a rating of 95 — a figure that dwarfed everything else in the field. Rossa Ryan in the saddle, too. That's a combination that tends to mean business. A horse rated that highly lining up in a Class 4 maiden raises eyebrows, but it also tells you connections are serious about getting a win on the board and building confidence. Whether Jaan Ki Tukri delivered the goods or not, this is a horse to keep very close tabs on.
The wildcards were intriguing too. El Paso (Taylor Fisher), Le Ciel Noble (Ryan Kavanagh), and Louis The Fifth (George Wood) all came in unrated — blank slates with unknown ceilings. On a track like Ffos Las, where the straight six can genuinely flatter a certain type of galloper, any of those could have turned up something interesting. Sole Ambition with Kieran Shoemark aboard is another worth noting — Shoemark doesn't take rides without purpose.
Ones to Follow: The Progressive Sorts
If you're building your notebook from today's card, here's where to start:
- Jaan Ki Tukri — That rating of 95 in a maiden screams confidence from connections. Whatever happened today, this horse is clearly being pointed somewhere bigger. Watch for entries at Newbury, Salisbury, or one of the better summer festivals.
- Nevasca Cinza (George Wood, 15:30) — Rated 73 in the Diplomat Hotel Maiden, this one arrives with form already on the clock. A five-furlong maiden at this level should be well within reach, and if Wood gets a clear run, don't be surprised if this one bolts up.
- Queen Sana (Kieran Shoemark, 15:30) — Rated 69 and partnered with one of the sharpest jockeys on the circuit. Shoemark has a habit of producing polished displays on horses with a bit of class, and Queen Sana has the profile of a filly who could progress quickly through the grades.
- Follow Your Heart (George Wood, 16:05) — Top-rated in the Preventapest Handicap at 70, with the course and distance form already there. The [D] flag tells you this horse has been here before and knows the track. That's a serious advantage at Ffos Las, where the undulations can catch strangers out.
- Kaleidoscope Eyes (Ryan Kavanagh, 16:05) — Rated just 55 but carrying both course and distance form [C,D]. That's the lowest-rated runner in the race but potentially the most streetwise. If the handicapper has been kind, this one could nick it at a massive price.
The Staying Races: Depth and Drama in the Afternoon
The back end of the card offered something for the stayers and the patient punters. The Dandara Confined Handicap at 16:40 — restricted to horses yet to win on the flat in 2026 — was a fascinating puzzle. Eight runners, all carrying the weight of a winless season, all desperate to break their duck. Havana Tobouggaloo and Racing Demon shared the top of the weights at 55, but it was Homeland (Rossa Ryan, rated 54) with course and distance form that caught the eye. Ryan again — he was busy today, and busy jockeys at midweek meetings usually mean yards are in form.
The closer at 17:14 — the Dandara Find Your Perfect New Home Handicap over a mile and three furlongs — had a proper staying contest feel to it. Liveinthelight (George Wood, rated 68) was the highest-rated runner and carries course form [C]. That matters over this trip at Ffos Las, where the track's undulations test stamina and composure in equal measure. Caelan (H.J. Horgan) and Meet Me In Meraki (Rossa Ryan) both deserve respect, but keep Liveinthelight in your notebook — a horse with a 68 rating and course knowledge at this level has every right to be competitive wherever connections point it next.
Jockey Watch: Ryan and Wood Running Hot
You couldn't miss Rossa Ryan today. Five rides across the card — Jaan Ki Tukri, Tallahassee Lassie, Star Velocity, Mayberry Moon, Homeland, and Meet Me In Meraki. That's not a jockey filling in rides; that's a jockey trusted by multiple yards on a day they wanted results. If Ryan was firing on all cylinders today, the ripple effect on those horses' next outings could be significant.
George Wood was equally prominent — Louis The Fifth, Nevasca Cinza, Dandy G Boy, Ibiza Lights, Liveinthelight. Wood is a jockey quietly building a strong book of rides, and several of his mounts today look the type to go on to better things. Keep an eye on his bookings over the next fortnight.
Kieran Shoemark also caught the eye — three rides, all on horses with ratings or profiles that suggest connections mean business. Shoemark rarely turns up at a track like this without a plan.
Looking Ahead: Where Do These Horses Go Next?
The GBB-qualified runners from the two maidens are the ones most likely to pop up quickly. Horses in the Great British Bonus scheme are incentivised to keep running, so expect Jaan Ki Tukri, Nevasca Cinza, and Queen Sana to be back on a racecourse within the fortnight — possibly at tracks like Ffos Las again, or stepping up to Chepstow, Haydock, or Newmarket depending on how today went.
For the handicappers, the confined race runners are the most interesting from a market perspective. Any horse that breaks a 2026 duck today will likely be reassessed by the handicapper, but the margin of victory matters. A narrow win keeps the ceiling open; a dominant one might attract a penalty before the next run. Either way, watch the entries boards closely over the next week.
All in all, Ffos Las did what it does best today — provided a lively, competitive afternoon with plenty of talking points and a handful of horses that will be worth following into the summer. The ground was right, the card was solid, and the jockeys delivered. That's a good Tuesday in anyone's book.
