A Summer Evening at Fontwell — What's Not to Love?

My late father had a saying: "Any evening at the races beats any evening without one." He was, as it happens, almost always right. And on a warm July Saturday with Good ground underfoot and seven races spread across a balmy Sussex evening, I reckon he'd have been first through the gates at Fontwell Park tonight, pint in hand, race card folded into his back pocket.

This is a lovely little card — nothing flash, nothing pretentious, just honest flat racing with a decent mix of apprentice action, a two-year-old maiden with some genuine intrigue, and a couple of Class 4 handicaps that should keep us on our toes. The Good going is ideal for a summer evening meeting. No extremes, no excuses — the horses who deserve to win should win. That's the theory, anyway.

Right, let's get into it. You can see the full Fontwell Park racecard for all the details, but here's my take on the races that matter most.

The Feature Race: The racingtv.com Handicap Stakes (19:20)

With a prize pot of £10,100 and a Class 4 stamp, the 19:20 over one mile five furlongs is the race I'd point any serious punter towards this evening. Six runners, Good ground, and a field headed by Prince of The Seas (4yo, rated 87) trained by David O'Meara and ridden by Mark Winn. On ratings alone, he's head and shoulders above this lot — a seven-pound pull on the next best — and O'Meara's yard has been in fine fettle this season.

But don't dismiss Spirit of Jura (4yo, rated 81) for Charlie Johnston. That course and distance form — marked up with both a [C] and a [D] — is the kind of thing that makes your ears prick up. A horse who has already won over this exact trip at this track is never to be taken lightly, regardless of the ratings gap. Connor Beasley takes the ride, and he's a jockey who knows how to deliver a horse late on a flat track.

Dunkeld Dreamer (3yo, rated 81) for K. R. Burke is another interesting contender. Three-year-olds get a weight allowance against their elders and Burke is a trainer who targets his horses well. Jack Nicholls, who has a busy evening ahead of him, takes the ride. Keep an eye on the market here — if Burke fancies this one, you'll know about it before the off.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

Thunderstorm Katie — 17:40 Apprentice Handicap

The opening race is a fun one. Eight runners, five furlongs, and a field of apprentice jockeys who'll be desperate to impress on a Saturday evening card. Thunderstorm Katie (5yo, rated 62, trained by Jim Goldie) catches the eye with both course and distance form to her name — always a meaningful tick at a tight, unique track like Fontwell. Rhys Elliott takes the ride and he's been picking up winners this summer. She's not the highest rated in the field, but horses with [C,D] form here tend to outperform their ratings, and on Good ground she should be travelling comfortably.

I'll also give a mention to Harb (7yo, rated 64) with Lexie Clarkson in the saddle. He's the joint top-rated on 64, he's got distance form, and Clarkson is a name to watch in the apprentice ranks this year. And Alex Jary on Azuinthejungle (4yo, rated 64) is the other joint top-rated — younger horse, less exposed, which in a race like this can sometimes be the difference.

Havana Gift — 18:15 EBF Maiden Stakes

The two-year-old maiden is always one of the trickier races to call — most of these youngsters are unknown quantities — but Havana Gift (rated 68, trained by John & Sean Quinn) arrives with the highest official rating in the field and Rhys Elliott back in the saddle. In a race where several runners are unrated debutants, having any kind of rating at all is a meaningful edge. Calef (rated 67, David O'Meara) is the only one close on ratings. These two look like the form picks, though two-year-old maidens have a wonderful habit of throwing up complete surprises — that's half the fun.

Iris Dancer — 18:50 Hamilton Handicap Stakes

Over six furlongs in the 18:50, Iris Dancer (8yo, rated 65, trained by Tristan Davidson) is the one I keep coming back to. Eight years old, you say? Yes, but she's got both course and distance form at Fontwell — [C,D] — and on Good ground, experienced horses who know the track can punch well above their weight. Connor Beasley takes the ride. The yard's Second Fiddle also carries course and distance form later in the evening, so Davidson clearly knows how to get horses running here.

Quiet Resolve — 19:50 Ladies Night Handicap

In the mile-plus Class 4 at 19:50, Quiet Resolve (5yo, rated 72, trained by Alan Brown) ticks the boxes I always look for: course winner, distance winner, and Good ground that should suit. Jack Nicholls rides and he's having a solid season. The top-rated runner is Lucky Camino (3yo, rated 80) for Hugo Palmer, and three-year-olds with weight on their side are always dangerous, but Quiet Resolve's proven record around here is hard to ignore.

How the Good Going Shapes Things

Good ground in July is as fair as it gets. It's not quick enough to massively favour the speedier, lighter-framed horses, and it's not soft enough to turn it into a slog. What it does do is reward genuine ability and good jumping — or in this case, good flat-track racing. For the older horses carrying course and distance form, Good ground means their previous wins here are directly relevant. There's no asterisk, no caveat. If they've won here on Good before, tonight's conditions are about as close to a repeat as you'll get.

For the younger horses — particularly in the two-year-old maiden — Good ground tends to produce clean, honest performances. We should get a fair read on who the genuine talents are, which makes it a useful race for future reference even if it's tricky to bet on today.

Roger's Best Bets — Ones to Watch Tonight

  • Thunderstorm Katie (17:40) — Course and distance form, good jockey booking in Rhys Elliott. Each-way appeal at minimum.
  • Havana Gift (18:15) — Top-rated in the maiden, Quinn yard in form. The one to beat in what is admittedly an open race.
  • Spirit of Jura (19:20) — Course and distance winner, each-way value against the top-rated Prince of The Seas. My each-way pick of the night.
  • Quiet Resolve (19:50) — Proven at Fontwell, Jack Nicholls in the saddle, Good ground suits. Solid each-way option in a competitive Class 4.
  • Iris Dancer (18:50) — Don't let the age fool you. Course and distance form is the trump card here.

It's a lovely evening card and Fontwell on a summer Saturday is one of those small pleasures in racing that never gets old. Enjoy every race, back your fancies sensibly, and if Thunderstorm Katie wins the opener, the rest of the evening will feel even better. Good luck out there — and as my dad would say, at least we're at the races.
