A Summer Evening at Fontwell — There's Nothing Quite Like It

My late father had a saying: "Any evening at the races beats any evening without one." He was, as fathers often are, absolutely right. And a Friday evening at Fontwell Park in the middle of July, with the ground riding Good to Firm and the smell of cut grass in the air, is about as good as this sport gets for the everyday punter. Seven races, a proper feature contest, and the kind of card that gives you something to think about over a cold drink. I'll take it every time.

The going is described as Good to Firm, Good in places, which at this time of year on the Sussex turf is pretty much ideal for horses who like to travel through their races rather than grind. Speed and class will be rewarded tonight — stamina plodders need not apply. Keep that in mind as we work through the Fontwell Park racecard together.

The Feature Race: Glasgow Stakes (19:50, Class 1 Listed, £80,000)

Right, let's go straight to the headline act. The British Stallion Studs EBF Glasgow Stakes is a Listed race worth £80,000 over 1m 3f 15y for three-year-olds, and it's the kind of race that separates the ambitious from the merely hopeful. Six runners, all with something to prove, and a prize fund that would make your eyes water.

Mr Colonel (Richard & Peter Fahey, Shane Gray) heads the weights on a rating of 97 and arrives as the one to beat on paper. Fahey's yard have been in fine form and Gray is a capable partner. However, ratings alone don't win races — particularly on fast ground where tactics matter enormously over this trip.

Prizeland (Andrew Balding, P.J. McDonald) is rated 94 and represents one of the shrewdest operations in training. Balding rarely runs horses without a solid plan, and McDonald is ice-cool in a finish. If Prizeland is fit and ready, he'll be finishing strongly when others are tying up.

Folk Pageant (Charlie Johnston, Jason Hart) on a mark of 90 is the one I keep coming back to. Hart is a jockey who thinks about his races — he's not just a passenger — and Johnston's yard have been placing their horses beautifully this season. The 1m 3f trip on quick ground could suit a horse who travels well, and Folk Pageant fits that profile. Don't dismiss him at what might be a tempting price.

Plaid (James Fanshawe, Daniel Muscutt) has course form to his name, which on a track with its own particular characteristics is never something to ignore. Fanshawe is a trainer who knows exactly what he's doing with a three-year-old in midsummer, and course experience on Good to Firm ground is a genuine asset tonight.

The Scottish Stewards' Cup Trial (19:15, Class 2, £37,500)

The Jordan Electrics Scottish Stewards' Cup Handicap over 6f is the second-biggest prize on the card and absolutely loaded with intrigue. Eight runners, a spread of ratings from 79 to 97, and a collection of horses who know their way around a track. This is a punter's race — competitive, open, and full of angles.

Ferrous (Jack Channon, Callum Rodriguez) tops the ratings on 97 and crucially has both course and distance form — those [C,D] flags are your friend in a race like this. On quick ground over six furlongs, a horse who has already shown they handle the track is a significant advantage, and Ferrous ticks that box emphatically.

Commanche Falls (Michael Dods, Mark Winn) is nine years old and still rated 97. Nine. Years. Old. I love this horse simply for still being here and being competitive, but beyond the sentimental attachment, he has course and distance form and Dods is a trainer who doesn't run his older horses just for exercise. If Commanche Falls lines up, he means business.

Gangsta Man (Jim Goldie, Paul Mulrennan) is the youngest in the field at four and carries a rating of 90 with course form to his name. Goldie has runners all over the card tonight, which suggests the yard is in good heart, and Mulrennan is a jockey who excels in competitive sprint handicaps. Watch him closely in the market.

Earlier in the Card — Ones to Note

17:30 — Joe Mac's Big Retirement Bash Handicap (1m 4f)

Only three runners, but quality throughout. Spirit of Jura (Charlie Johnston, Jason Hart) is top-rated on 81 and carries the [C] flag for course form. In a small field on Good to Firm ground, the horse who has already shown they handle the track is often the one who dictates the race. Hart will know that, and he'll ride accordingly. Hard to look past Spirit of Jura in a race this small.

18:05 — Jordan Electrics EBF Restricted Maiden (6f, 2YO)

Maiden two-year-old races are always a little bit of a lottery — nobody really knows what they've got yet — but a few names stand out. Instant Force (K.R. Burke, Clifford Lee) represents a yard that consistently produces sharp juveniles, and Burke rarely runs a two-year-old without expecting a decent showing first time out. Battle Fever (Kevin Ryan, Kevin Stott) is another from a yard with a strong record with youngsters. Ryan and Stott are a well-drilled combination and worth respecting. On fast ground, early pace will be crucial — watch the market moves before the off.

18:40 — Hamish MacGregor Memorial Nursery Handicap (6f, 2YO)

A nursery handicap for juveniles, and Fern Clyde (Tim Easterby, Sean Kirrane) leads the way with both course and distance form on a mark of 74. That [C,D] flag in a two-year-old nursery is genuinely significant — these youngsters are still learning, and one who has already been around the track successfully has a real edge. Easterby is a master with precocious sprinters and this looks a solid opportunity.

20:25 — Hamilton Park Celebrates 100 Years Handicap (5f)

Law of Average (Chelsea Banham, Joey Haynes) is top-rated at 81 with course and distance form, and five furlongs on fast ground is a test of pure speed. Banham is a trainer quietly building a fine record and Haynes is underrated by many punters. Could go well at a price.

21:00 — Hampton by Hilton Fillies' Handicap (1m 68y)

A lovely closer to the evening. Sogniamo (David O'Meara, Daniel Tudhope) has course form and Tudhope is simply one of the best jockeys in the country on a horse who travels well. O'Meara knows how to place a filly, and on Good to Firm ground over a mile, Sogniamo could prove very hard to beat. Also keep an eye on Geo (Jim Goldie, Paul Mulrennan) who has distance form and is part of what looks like a strong Goldie team tonight.

Best Bets & Ones to Watch

  • Best Bet: Folk Pageant (19:50) — Hart and Johnston in a Listed race on ground that suits. Value possible against the higher-rated Mr Colonel.
  • Each-Way Pick: Prizeland (19:50) — Balding and McDonald rarely miss when the conditions are right. Solid each-way proposition.
  • Confident Selection: Spirit of Jura (17:30) — Three runners, course form, Jason Hart. Keep it simple.
  • One to Watch: Ferrous (19:15) — Top-rated, course and distance winner, and a trainer who knows how to have one ready for a big prize.
  • Dark Horse: Sogniamo (21:00) — Tudhope on a course-proven filly for O'Meara to close the evening. Could be the value of the night.
