A Summer Evening Worth Savouring
There's something about an evening meeting at a smaller track in late June that takes me straight back to childhood. My dad used to pile the whole family into the old Vauxhall Cavalier and drive us down to the nearest racecourse on warm Thursday evenings, fish and chips in a paper bag on the back seat, the windows down, the radio on. We never won much. We never cared much, either. It was just lovely. That's the feeling tonight's card at Fontwell Park ought to conjure — seven races, a long summer evening, and just enough intrigue to keep things interesting.
The going is Good to Firm, Good in places, which is about as kind as it gets for a flat card. The ground will be quick underfoot, rewarding horses with a bit of zip and penalising anything that needs cut in the ground. Bear that in mind as we work through the card. You can see everything laid out on the Fontwell Park racecard — seven contests ranging from a fiercely competitive Class 3 sprint handicap to a charming amateur riders' opener. Let's get into it.
The Feature Race: Patersons of Greenoakhill Handicap Stakes (19:30)
With a prize fund of £22,000, the Class 3 five-furlong handicap at 19:30 is comfortably the feature race of the evening, and it's a cracking little contest on paper. Nine runners, a tight rating band, and Good to Firm ground that will have the faster horses licking their lips.
Eye of Dubai (rated 88, P. J. McDonald) and Tatterstall (also rated 88, Connor Beasley) share top billing on the figures, and both deserve serious respect. Tatterstall carries the [D] flag — a course and distance winner — which on quick ground over five furlongs at a track like this is worth its weight in gold. Michael Dods has him in fine form and Beasley is a shrewd booking. He's the one I'd want onside.
Gangsta Man (rated 86, Paul Mulrennan) represents Jim Goldie's strong hand on the night, and Mulrennan is a jockey who rarely wastes a journey south. Al Hussar (rated 83, Oliver Stammers) holds a course and distance win [D] too, which keeps him firmly in the picture despite being a few pounds lower in the weights. On going this fast, those with proven course form are at a real premium.
Key Runners to Watch Across the Card
Annandale — 18:00 Amateur Jockeys' Handicap
The opener is always a bit of fun, and the amateur jockeys' contest is no exception. Seven runners, a mile and five furlongs, and a field that includes horses trained by Donald McCain, Archie Watson and the ever-present Jim Goldie. Annandale (8yo, rated 55) catches the eye immediately — she holds both course and distance form [C,D], which on Good to Firm ground over this trip is a significant advantage. Miss Kayleigh Williams takes the ride and will be hoping that experience around this track tells in the closing stages.
One Million Dreams (rated 60, Miss Brodie Hampson) is the highest-rated runner alongside Animato and carries the [D] flag for Archie Watson. She's the one the market will likely find first, and rightly so — distance form here counts for a lot over a mile and five on quick ground. Miss Lizzie O'Neill takes the mount on the McCain-trained Animato, who is rated level on 60 and shouldn't be dismissed. Mr Eireann Cagney partners Alnayef for Jim Goldie — another yard with plenty of runners tonight and clearly happy to make the trip.
Call Nicki — 18:30 EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes
The two-year-old fillies' maiden over five furlongs is always one of the more fascinating races to unpick, simply because so many of these youngsters are unknown quantities. Call Nicki (rated 69, Andrew Mullen) for Tim Easterby is the highest-rated runner in the field and has clearly shown something already. On fast ground over a sharp five furlongs, that experience and rating advantage could prove decisive. Bellatina (rated 64, Connor Beasley) for Charlie Johnston is the other one with a rating and deserves consideration, but Call Nicki looks the most likely favourite here.
Valenday — 20:00 Maiden Stakes
The mile-and-a-bit maiden at eight o'clock is a lovely race. Valenday (3yo, rated 83, Kevin Stott) for Kevin Ryan is the top-rated runner and carries that number with the confidence of a yard that knows exactly what they have. Kahin (rated 82, Paul Mulrennan) for William Haggas is only a pound behind and Haggas runners at this level rarely show up without a genuine chance. These two look a cut above the rest of the field, and on Good to Firm ground, both should be moving smoothly.
Ruby Wedding — 20:30 Fillies' Handicap
A small but perfectly formed field of four fillies over a mile and three furlongs. Ruby Wedding (3yo, rated 75, P. J. McDonald) is the top weight and the one to beat for Andrew Balding — a trainer who knows how to place his horses. McDonald is a high-quality booking for what looks a winnable race. The going will suit those with a bit of pace, and a three-year-old filly with a 75 rating in a Class 5 field of four has every right to go off favourite.
How the Going Affects Tonight's Runners
Good to Firm ground is the great leveller in one sense — it tends to expose horses that are either unfit or simply don't handle quick underfoot conditions. Across tonight's seven races, keep an eye on anything carrying the [C] or [D] flags, because proven form around Fontwell on this type of going is genuinely hard to replicate. Horses that have won here before know the track — it's a unique figure-of-eight configuration on the jumping side that even translates quirks onto the flat — and they know how to handle the surface when it's riding quick.
Stayers and grinders will find it tougher tonight. The five-furlong sprints in particular will be over in a flash, and anything that needs time to warm up simply won't get it. Back the quick starters, the proven course performers, and the horses from yards that have travelled with intent.
Best Bets & Ones to Watch
- Tatterstall (19:30) — Course and distance winner, top-rated, Beasley booked. The standout bet of the night on Good to Firm ground.
- Ruby Wedding (20:30) — Top weight in a field of four with McDonald up. Hard to see past her in a small, winnable race.
- Valenday (20:00) — Kevin Ryan's highest-rated runner in the maiden, Stott a smart booking. Should go close.
- Annandale (18:00) — Course and distance form [C,D] in the amateur riders' contest. Solid each-way option at what could be a generous price.
- Call Nicki (18:30) — Highest-rated filly in the juvenile maiden. Easterby sends them ready.
It's a lovely card for a warm Thursday evening. Pour yourself something cold, settle in, and enjoy the racing. That's what evenings like this are for. Good luck out there — and as my old dad used to say, back the ones you fancy and enjoy the ones you don't. Sound advice, even now.
