Monday Magic Under the Floodlights
Don't let anyone tell you Monday racing can't deliver the goods! Kempton Park served up an absolute cracker of a card that had everything – from amateur jockey drama to class handicappers strutting their stuff on the all-weather.
Seven races spanning the afternoon into evening, and what a treat for those who made the trek to Sunbury-on-Thames. The standard going proved perfect for some serious speed, and boy did we get it!
The feature Sky Sports Racing Handicap at 14:51 was always going to be the main event, but this Kempton Park racecard had depth from top to bottom. From the amateur riders getting their kicks in the opener to some seriously progressive types lurking in the evening finale.
Dr Strangelove Shows His Class
Tom Marquand aboard Dr Strangelove in that £10k Sky Sports Racing Handicap – now that's what you call a combination with serious intent! The 87-rated gelding was the class act of the field, and when you've got Marquand in the saddle, you know connections mean business.
This six-furlong dash had real quality throughout. Dyrholaey and Rare Change both carrying 84 ratings made it a proper test, while Twilight Jet at 79 looked like he could spring a surprise at bigger odds.
But it was Dr Strangelove who caught the eye most. That rating of 87 doesn't lie – this horse has been mixing it in some decent company, and a drop back to this level suggests the handicapper might have been kind. Marquand doesn't take these rides lightly, and you can bet the stable fancied their chances.
Ones to Follow: Future Stars in the Making
The maiden stakes at 15:51 was absolutely stuffed with potential. When you see David Egan making the trip for an unrated runner like Behike, your ears should prick up immediately. Egan doesn't mess about with no-hopers.
Golden Brown already carrying an 86 rating tells you everything about the quality in this field. But it's the unrated brigade that really got the pulse racing. Rainbow Sorbet with Finley Marsh looked interesting on paper, while Kyoto carrying Rob Hornby's name deserves serious respect.
The fillies' restricted novice stakes threw up some fascinating runners too. Polka Blue already rated 69 and partnered by Jason Watson looked like she meant business. But keep a close eye on Archer's Grace with Daniel Muscutt – that combination has been flying recently.
Startled Lady at 65 rating might have been the form pick, but sometimes these restricted events throw up surprises. Thimble with Georgia Dobie looked like one to keep on the right side of.
Jockey Power Plays
What a day for the weighing room talent! Rob Hornby was everywhere – three rides across the card including Rose Cotton in the Joan Butcher 90th Birthday Handicap. When Hornby's booking multiple mounts, you know he fancies at least one of them.
Finley Marsh had a busy afternoon too, picking up some tasty rides including Rainbow Sorbet in the maiden and Golden Circet in the finale. The young jockey's been in red-hot form lately, and these bookings suggest trainers are taking notice.
Tom Marquand's presence on Dr Strangelove and later Harlington in the closing handicap showed serious intent from connections. You don't get Marquand for fun rides – both horses were clearly fancied to run big.
Special mention for the amateur jockeys getting their moment in the spotlight. Miss Brodie Hampson on Alazwar and Mr Henry Callan aboard No Knee Never – these riders don't get many chances to shine, but when they do, they grab them with both hands!
Evening Finale Sets Up Future Targets
That closing £7.6k handicap over the extended mile and a quarter looked a proper puzzle. Golden Circet with Finley Marsh carried top weight at 75, but sometimes that rating can flatter to deceive.
Perfect Scoundrel and Spaceport both at 74 made it a three-way battle at the head of the weights. But it's often the ones lurking down the bottom who spring the surprises in these competitive handicaps.
Harlington with Tom Marquand booking caught the eye – that 73 rating might just underestimate this one's ability. The fact Marquand made the trip suggests connections were confident of a big run.
Keep an eye on where these horses pop up next. The ones who ran well here will be targeting similar contests at tracks like Lingfield and Newcastle. The all-weather circuit's heating up as we head deeper into the season.
The Verdict: Quality Throughout
Monday at Kempton proved once again that weekday racing can deliver serious entertainment. From the amateur jockey drama to the class acts strutting their stuff, this card had everything a racing fan could want.
Dr Strangelove looks the pick to follow from the feature race, while that maiden stakes threw up several future winners. The fillies' events showed real depth of quality too.
Most importantly, this card highlighted just how competitive the all-weather scene has become. These aren't just winter warmups anymore – they're proper contests with serious prize money and top-class jockeys fighting for every winner.
Roll on the next Kempton card – if it's half as good as this one, we're in for another treat!
