Evening Action Under The Lights
Right then, punters – Saturday evening at Musselburgh and we've got eight races to get stuck into. Standard going, which is music to my ears after the bog-fest we endured at Doncaster last weekend. The track's riding fair and true, the floodlights are on, and there's proper prize money on offer.
The feature race is that Class 4 handicap at five o'clock – the wonderfully named 'Built For 2026 Not 2006' Stakes. Love a sponsor with a sense of humour. £10.8k up for grabs over a mile and four, which should sort the wheat from the chaff. Feature Race: The 17:00 Handicap
Seven runners, but this looks a proper contest. Cabrera sits pretty at the top of the weights on 86, and there's good reason for that. Edward Bethell's five-year-old has been knocking on the door all season, and Callum Rodriguez knows him like an old mate. The trip's bang on – he's won over similar distances before.
But here's the thing about Musselburgh – it rewards horses with a turn of foot, and Machete has that in spades. Daniel Tudhope takes the ride for David O'Meara, and this seven-year-old veteran has course form in the locker. Rated 83, he's got 3lb less to carry than the favourite, which could be crucial in the closing stages.
Don't sleep on Charlie's Choice either. Hollie Doyle makes the trip north for David Simcock, and when Hollie travels, you sit up and take notice. The six-year-old is down in the weights at 80, has distance form, and Doyle's 7lb claim makes this look very workable.
Novice Action Worth Watching
The 17:30 novice stakes brings together eight three-year-olds who are still learning their trade. Starglow catches the eye immediately – Charlie Appleby doesn't send them north without good reason, and Billy Loughnane in the saddle suggests they mean business.
Wareeth for Archie Watson is another with obvious claims. The yard's been in cracking form lately, and with Hollie Doyle doing the steering again, this one's clearly fancied. Watson's three-year-olds often improve sharply for their early runs, so don't be surprised if this one steps forward markedly.
Showcasing Star represents the Charlie Johnston stable, and Jason Hart knows Musselburgh like the back of his hand. Local knowledge counts for plenty round here, especially when the lights are on and the atmosphere builds.
Handicap Highlights
The 19:00 handicap over a mile looks competitive as you like. Eleven runners, but Selection for Ivan Furtado jumps off the page. Course and distance winner, Jason Hart up again, and the four-year-old's been running well in better company lately. Rated 75, he should have too much class for most of these.
Criminal Shore is interesting for David O'Meara and Daniel Tudhope. The four-year-old has distance form and is another who's been mixing it in stronger fields. If the pace is strong, his staying power could tell.
The sprint handicap at 20:00 brings together eight three-year-olds, and Cool Molly looks the one to beat. Sam James takes the ride for Ollie Sangster, and this filly has been running some tidy races in defeat. Distance winner, progressive profile, and drawn to get a good run.
Apprentice Finale
Always love the apprentice races – proper competitive affairs where the young guns get their chance to shine. The 20:30 contest looks wide open, but South Road for the Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore team catches the eye. Lewis Chalkley takes 7lb off, and this four-year-old has been running consistently without winning. Distance form in the book, and the claim could make all the difference.
Tarlac is another to consider. Katie Scott's four-year-old has been thereabouts lately, and Alfie Redman's 5lb claim brings him right into contention off this mark.
Danny's Verdict
Right, here's how I see it playing out. In the feature race, I'm siding with Charlie's Choice – Hollie Doyle travelling north, distance form, and that claim making the weight very manageable. She'll get a lovely run from Callum Shepherd and time her challenge perfectly.
For the novice races, Starglow looks the Appleby special, while Selection should have too much class in that competitive handicap at seven. The sprint goes to Cool Molly – she's been knocking on the door and this looks her time.
Best value of the night might be South Road in the apprentice finale. That 7lb claim transforms the race, and Russell's northern raiders often travel well to Musselburgh.
