A Lovely Summer Evening at Ponte

My dad used to say that Pontefract on a summer evening was one of life's quiet pleasures — a pint of something cold, the sun dipping behind the grandstand, and a card full of honest, competitive racing. He wasn't wrong. I've been making the trip up to West Yorkshire for more years than I care to admit, and the place still gives me a little lift every time I walk through the gates. Tonight, we've got six races spread across the evening session, and with the going described as Good, Good to Firm in places, conditions look about as inviting as they get on the flat. No excuses for connections, and no excuses for us punters either.

The Feature Race: City of Ripon Handicap (20:10, 1m, Class 3)

With £15,000 in prize money on offer, the City of Ripon Handicap Stakes is the race of the night, and it's a cracking one. Six three-year-olds line up over a mile, and the ratings are bunched tightly enough to make this genuinely competitive. At the top of the weights we have Command The Stars (rated 92, George Scott/Darragh Keenan), and he's the one they'll all have to beat. George Scott's yard has been in fine form, and a horse rated 92 dropping into a Class 3 deserves plenty of respect.

But the one I keep coming back to is Noelan Star (rated 90, Edward Bethell/Daniel Tudhope). He carries the [D] flag — a course winner here at Pontefract — and that matters more than people sometimes give it credit for. This track has its quirks: that long, sweeping bend into the straight catches out horses who haven't been here before. Noelan Star knows the place, Tudhope knows the horse, and on good to firm ground, connections will fancy their chances. This is my headline selection of the evening.

William Haggas saddles Masked Warrior (rated 89, Harry Davies), and you'd be a brave person to dismiss anything from that yard. He's 3lb below the top weight and looks the most likely danger to the front two in the market.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

Baldosa (18:00 — Apprentice Handicap, 1m 1f 170y)

The opening race is an apprentice handicap for three-year-olds, and it's a lovely little puzzle to start the evening. Baldosa (rated 51, Nigel Tinkler) carries the [D] flag — a course winner — and that's a significant edge in a field where several of these are still finding their feet. Ethan Tindall takes the ride, and he's been quietly building a solid book of form this season. The extra distance of 1m 1f 170y suits a horse who stays well, and Tinkler knows how to place them. Each-way appeal at a decent price.

Don't completely overlook Sports Day at the top of the weights (rated 60, Michael Bell). Toby Moore is an apprentice worth following, and Bell's horses tend to run to their ratings reliably. If Sports Day is as good as his mark suggests, he could be hard to peg back from the front.

Also worth a mention: Millie Wonnacott takes the ride on Lc Tiffen for Lisa Williamson, and Rhys Elliott partners Riddikulus — who carries the [C] flag, meaning a course winner. Alex Jary is also on the card tonight aboard Balmoral Boy, and he's another apprentice who's been catching the eye.

Towelontheterrace (18:30 — EBF Novice Stakes, 6f)

What a name. I genuinely had to read it twice. But behind the wonderful moniker is a horse with a rating of 83 — streets clear of the unrated rivals in this two-year-old novice — and a [D] flag to boot. Jennie Candlish trains, George Wood rides, and on fast ground over six furlongs, Towelontheterrace looks the one to beat. The Crisford-trained Pure Mint is unrated but carries the weight of a powerful yard's expectation, and K. R. Burke's Reflect On Glory is another to keep onside. But if Towelontheterrace is anywhere near his best, this looks like his race to lose.

Fractional (19:05 — Fillies' Novice Stakes, 1m)

Five fillies go to post in the Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate Fillies' Novice Stakes, and Fractional (rated 75, William Haggas/Harry Davies) heads the market on ratings. Haggas fillies on good to firm ground over a mile — that's a combination that tends to work out more often than not. Flawless Fusion (rated 74, Jessica Bedi/Joe Leavy) is the closest on figures and shouldn't be dismissed, but Fractional gets the nod.

What A Tahoo (20:40 — Sky Sports Racing Handicap, 5f)

The closer is a six-runner sprint handicap, and the ratings are as tight as a drum — four horses sharing the top weight of 54. What A Tahoo (3yo, Richard & Peter Fahey/Cam Hardie) carries both the [C] and [D] flags — a course and distance winner — and on good to firm ground over five furlongs, that experience could be decisive. Fahey's yard knows a sprinter, and this horse has already shown he handles this track and trip. A solid each-way shout to round off the evening.

How the Going Plays Tonight

Good to firm in places is the sweet spot for most flat horses in the summer — quick enough to favour those with a turn of foot, but not so quick that it becomes a lottery. Tonight's card suits horses who race prominently and can take advantage of the pace on the top of the ground. Course winners get an extra tick in the box, because Pontefract's undulating track and distinctive bend can unsettle horses who haven't experienced it before. On a faster surface, the track's quirks are amplified — horses who drift or hang can lose more ground than usual. Proven course form is golden tonight.

In the nursery handicap at 19:40, Paper View (Richard Hannon/Joe Leavy, rated 73) carries the [D] flag and is worth including in multiples. Hannon juveniles tend to handle quick ground well, and at a competitive mark, he could run into a place at least.
