My old dad used to say that a Thursday evening at Southwell was the working man's Royal Ascot. He wasn't wrong, either — not in spirit, anyway. There's something quietly brilliant about an all-weather evening meeting. The day's work is done, the kettle's on, and eight races are lined up like buses on the Southwell racecard. What more could you want?

Before we get into the good stuff, a word on the ground. The track is being cultivated to four inches and reinstated with a Gallop-master finish ahead of this fixture, which means the going is Standard — as honest and consistent as the Fibresand surface gets. This is important. Standard Southwell tends to reward horses with a bit of tactical speed and, crucially, those who have shown they can handle the unique kickback and surface feel of this track. Course form here is not just a nice-to-have — it's close to essential. Keep your eyes firmly on those [C] and [D] flags throughout the card.

With a prize fund of £10,000 and a quality field of nine fillies and mares, the 18:40 is the race I'd sit up straight for. It's a competitive Class 4 mile and there are some interesting angles to unpick.

Chantelle (Sir Mark Prescott, Luke Morris) heads the weights on a mark of 80, and you never quite dismiss anything that comes out of Prescott's yard for a track like this. Sir Mark has made a career out of placing horses precisely where they need to be, and if Chantelle is here, there's usually a reason. Watch the market on her closely.

Great Mates (Marco Botti, Billy Loughnane) carries the [D] flag — she's won over this distance before — and at a mark of 76, she's not without a squeak. Botti has been quietly progressive with his all-weather string this season, and Loughnane is in fine fettle.

The one I keep coming back to, though, is Alessia Fernanda (Declan Carroll, Zak Wheatley). She's six years old, rated 71, and carries both the [C] and [D] badges — a course and distance winner, in other words. On Standard Fibresand, that experience counts for a great deal. She's down at the bottom of the weights, which helps, and Carroll's team know exactly what they're doing with her. Don't let the age put you off — older fillies on the all-weather often improve season on season, and she's clearly at home here.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

16:30 — Startling (John Wainwright, Jason Hart)

We kick off at 16:30 with a Class 6 sprint over 4f 215y, and the standout on paper is Startling — top-rated at 60 and carrying the [D] flag for course and distance form. Jason Hart is a jockey who knows his way around Southwell, and Wainwright has placed this horse here for a reason. In a race of this grade, course winners with a reliable jockey aboard tend to be hard to beat. Keep him onside.

That said, James Sullivan aboard Invincible Crown (Ruth Carr, rated 56) is also worth a mention — another [D] horse, and Sullivan is a polished performer on the all-weather circuit. Ruth Carr's horses are always fit and ready, and this one could run a big race at a bigger price.

19:10 — Hot And Cold (Sir Mark Prescott, Luke Morris)

The 19:10 Class 4 mile is a cracking little handicap, and the horse that jumps out is Hot And Cold — a three-year-old from Sir Mark Prescott's yard, top-rated on 81, and carrying the [D] flag. Prescott and the all-weather go together like fish and chips, and a horse of this rating dropping into a Class 4 with proven distance form is the sort of thing you underestimate at your peril.

Hale End and Kalamunda (both Michael Dods and Joseph Parr respectively, both rated 80) carry [C,D] flags and deserve respect, but it's Hard to look past a Prescott-trained horse with this profile on Standard going.

20:10 — Star Chorus (Mike Murphy, Darragh Keenan)

The finale is a twelve-runner Class 4 sprint over 6f 17y, and it's a proper closer to the evening. Star Chorus (rated 81, [C,D]) is the one I'm drawn to. Darragh Keenan has been riding with real confidence lately, and a horse with course and distance form at the top of a competitive sprint field is exactly the profile you want. Mike Murphy's yard has been in decent nick, and at 81 this is a horse with the class to dominate if things go right.

In a race this big, though, keep an eye on Papa Cocktail (Michael Herrington, Jason Hart, [C,D]) — seven years old, rated 78, and a genuine Southwell specialist. Hart on a course-and-distance winner is always a combination worth respecting.

19:40 — Chale Chalo (Tom Dascombe, Jason Hart)

Back to Jason Hart — and he's having quite the evening if these previews are anything to go by. Chale Chalo in the 19:40 Class 5 seven-furlong handicap is top-rated at 75 and carries the [D] flag. Dascombe's horses tend to be well-prepared for the all-weather, and Hart aboard a course winner at the top of the market is a combination that catches the eye. It's a competitive three-year-old heat, but this one looks the one to beat.

Worth a mention too: Warren Fentiman takes the ride on What A Tahoo in the opener, and Joanna Mason is aboard Gwen Tennyson in the same race — Mason is a rider who always seems to find another gear at tracks like this, so don't write her off in a Class 6.

How the Going Affects Our Selections

Standard Fibresand at Southwell is a surface that rewards horses who have run on it before. Unlike turf, where going variations can swing a race dramatically, Standard here is consistent and reliable — but it still has its quirks. The kickback can unsettle horses who haven't experienced it, and the surface tends to suit those who travel well through a race rather than those who need a strong pace to deliver a late burst.

That's why the [C] and [D] flags matter so much tonight.
