Keep him onside.

Masterly under Billy Garritty — who has a busy evening with multiple rides — is also worth including in your calculations. Garritty knows this track intimately, and a horse named Masterly in a maiden over this trip has a certain ring to it that I can't quite ignore. Call it gut instinct. Call it years of misspent Saturday evenings. Either way, note it down.

Ones to Follow

Evening cards at Southwell have a wonderful habit of producing horses that quietly pop up again a few weeks later at a slightly better track and catch everyone off guard. Here are the names I'd be writing on the back of my racecard tonight:

  • Ziggy's Triton (17:55, Class 4 Div II, Daniel Muscutt, rated 86) — Course and distance winner, rated 86 in a competitive sprint handicap. If he goes well here, connections might look towards something slightly more prestigious before the season closes. A horse with C,D form on the Fibresand at this level is always dangerous.
  • Patrol (18:30, Class 5, Jack Callan, rated 75) — Course and distance form, a mile and a half on standard going. Callan is underrated as a jockey at this level and a horse with this profile in a Class 5 staying handicap could be ready to step up a grade if the performance warrants it.
  • Come On Over (20:30, Class 5, Billy Garritty, rated 76) — Course form, six furlongs, and Garritty in the saddle for the final sprint of the evening. Horses with a D flag at Southwell in six-furlong handicaps deserve enormous respect. This is a horse that knows its job.
  • Packetofbiscuits (20:00, Class 5, Callum Hutchinson, rated 72) — I mean, come on. The name alone deserves a mention. But beyond the charm, C,D form over seven furlongs in a Class 5 is a solid platform. If Hutchinson can get a good position early, this one could run into a place at the very least.

The Apprentice Race and the EBF Fillies' Maiden

Two races on this card deserve a special mention for slightly different reasons.

The 19:30 Apprentice Handicap over a mile is always a fascinating puzzle. Fourteen runners, a mix of course-and-distance specialists and horses having a first look at the track, and a group of young jockeys all trying to prove something. Gladiadora (Liam Wright) and Imola (Alex Jary) both carry C,D form and are worth keeping an eye on. In an apprentice race, the horse that knows the track often compensates for whatever the jockey is still learning. It's not a slight on the riders — it's just the reality of the game.

Meanwhile, the 16:45 EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies' Stakes opens proceedings in earnest and could be a dark horse for producing a name to follow. Shaniko (William Carson, rated 72) heads the ratings and Carson is a jockey who can be quietly brilliant. Mollisha with Billy Garritty and Romotoso with Harry Vigors (who also has a very busy book of rides tonight) are both rated 70 and will make this competitive. The unrated fillies — So Sexy Me, Ghazalia, Love Always, and Picnic Princess — are the wildcards. One of them might just turn up and surprise us all. That's the beauty of a maiden.

Jockey Watch: A Busy Night for Several Boots

A card like this is a proper workout for the jockeys. Billy Garritty looks to have the most demanding book of the evening, with rides spread across the card from the opening sprint to the final furlong. His knowledge of Southwell is a genuine asset — he's ridden here enough times to know exactly where races are won and lost on this track.

Daniel Muscutt is another who crops up repeatedly, and he's a jockey I always feel comfortable backing at this level. He doesn't overcomplicate things, which is exactly what you want on an evening card where the margins are tight and the fields are big.

Keep an eye on Harry Vigors too — multiple rides, a mix of distances, and he's been quietly building a decent book of form at this sort of meeting. Young jockeys who thrive at Southwell tend to develop a real affinity for Fibresand racing, and that can pay dividends for followers of the sport.
