Marengo Storm is another with the course form in the book, trained by Richard Hughes who knows how to get them ready for the big nights. The booking of Finley Marsh suggests connections are confident, and this one's been knocking on the door recently.
Don't overlook Sargent Dennis either – Jack Channon's charge boasts both course and distance form, and Rose Dawes has been riding with real confidence lately. At 74, he's getting weight from the market leaders and could sneak in at a price.
Course Specialists to Follow
Looking through tonight's Wincanton racecard, the course and distance winners leap off the page. In the opening Trev's Final Furlong Handicap, Distant Rumble ticks every box – course and distance winner, Jack Callan in the saddle, and Roger Teal knows how to place his horses. At 67, he's well handicapped for this Class 6 affair.
Monsieur Patat might be nine years old, but he's a Wincanton specialist who clearly loves this track. Adrian Wintle's veteran has course and distance form, and these old campaigners often find one more big effort when the lights go on.
In the 6:30 three-year-old handicap, Legacy Rock stands out as another course and distance winner. The Newland and Insole partnership has been in good form, and Jack Callan takes the ride again – always a positive sign when a top jockey picks up spare rides.
The Youngsters Making Their Mark
The 6pm maiden stakes for two-year-olds is always fascinating – these babies are still learning their trade, but there are some well-bred sorts in here. King of Montenegro represents Brian Meehan, a trainer who excels with his juveniles, while Lord Ragnar comes from the Ed Dunlop stable, another yard renowned for bringing along their youngsters properly.
The fact that Neil Callan has chosen Agitator from Oliver Cole's string suggests this one might know his job already. These experienced jockeys don't often get it wrong when picking up outside rides on debut horses.

This good to firm ground will suit the speedier types, particularly over the shorter distances. The six-furlong contests should see some smart times, and horses with a turn of foot will have a distinct advantage. The longer races might see more tactical affairs, but even then, the faster ground will favour those who can quicken when it matters.
For the staying contests, particularly the 1m 3f finale, stamina will still be at a premium, but horses will need to be able to pick up when the pace quickens. The ground shouldn't inconvenience any of tonight's runners – it's proper racing ground that will see the best horse on the night come to the fore.
