Setting the Scene at Wolverhampton

Right then, pull up a stool and let's talk racing. It's a Friday evening in September, the nights are just starting to get that first whisper of autumn about them, and Wolverhampton is putting on a seven-race National Hunt card that deserves your attention. Good going — SMM reading of 54% — which is about as fair and honest a surface as you'll get at this time of year. No excuses for anything with a decent cruising speed, and no hiding place for anything that needs deep ground to grind its rivals into submission. If your horse is well, it'll show tonight.

Seven races spanning from 16:30 all the way through to 19:36, covering everything from a Class 5 bumper with ten unraced or lightly raced youngsters to a proper Class 4 handicap chase over nearly three miles. There's something for every type of punter on the Wolverhampton racecard, and I've been through it with the fine-tooth comb so you don't have to. You're welcome.

Feature Race: The Copybet Overnight BOG Handicap Chase (16:30)

The richest prize on the card — £8,900 — goes to the opening race of the evening, a Class 4 handicap chase over 2m 7f. Six runners, tight ratings band from 100 to 114, and this is where I want to spend most of my analytical energy because there's a proper puzzle to unpick here.

Giovanni Change heads the weights at 114 and carries the course-and-distance form flag with a [D] next to his name. He's eleven years old — yes, eleven — but Mark Walford keeps his horses fighting fit and Jamie Hamilton knows how to get the best from a seasoned campaigner. On Good ground over this trip, his experience is an asset rather than a liability. Don't write him off purely on age — this track and distance suits him, and that counts for a lot.

Dexperts Opinion is the one that really catches my eye, though. Six years old, rated 111, and carrying both the [C] and [D] markers — course winner AND distance winner. Sean Bowen takes the ride for the Mickey Bowen yard, and that's a family combination that knows how to target a race. At 6, he's in the prime of his chasing career, and on Good ground he should be able to travel well and pick up when it matters. Sean Bowen is in sparkling form and won't need asking twice on a horse with proven form at this venue.

Mumford's Magic from Dan Skelton's yard is interesting at 111 with Tristan Durrell up. Skelton sends them out ready, and while there's no course or distance form on record, the yard's strike rate at tracks like this demands respect. Keep him onside for the place at minimum.

The Bumper: Ten Unknowns and One Big Clue (17:36)

The Class 5 National Hunt Flat Race over 2m is a Category 1 Elimination — which means the winner qualifies for a series final and there'll be serious intent from connections. Ten runners, none of them rated, and most of them are essentially unknown quantities. This is where pedigree, yard form, and jockey bookings do the talking.

Brave Lion is trained by Olly Murphy and ridden by Sean Bowen — that pairing alone puts him near the top of my shortlist. Murphy is a trainer who targets these bumpers intelligently, and Bowen doesn't take spare rides for the fun of it. The four-year-old will be fit and ready.

Company Charge from the Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies yard with Sam Twiston-Davies in the saddle is another you can't ignore. The family know their bumper horses inside out, and Sam has a lovely, patient style that suits a horse finding its feet in this type of race.

Queens Glance gets Harry Cobden — the former Gold Cup-winning jockey doesn't need charity rides. Mark Rimell's filly must have shown something at home to attract that calibre of jockey. Worth a small each-way interest at whatever price she opens at.

Handicap Hurdles: The Evening's Bread and Butter

The two Class 4 handicap hurdles — the 2m at 18:36 and the 2m 4f at 19:06 — are where the serious punters will be concentrating their firepower, and rightly so.

In the 18:36, Tilehurst is the one for me. Rated 110, five years old, and carrying both the [C] and [D] badges — he's been here before and he's liked what he's found. Neil Mulholland sends him out with Sean Bowen aboard, and on Good ground over 2m, a horse with proven course-and-distance form starts with a significant advantage. Emerald Time also has [C,D] form and Ryan Hatch's yard has been in decent nick. These two could fight out the finish.

The 19:06 over 2m 4f has the highest-rated horse of the evening in Handlethekettle — rated 122 and carrying [C,D] form for Jamie Snowden, with Gavin Sheehan in the saddle. He's the class horse in the race and the top weight, but Good ground suits a horse of his ability and he's done it here before. The danger is That's Nice from Nicky Henderson's yard — Henderson sending a horse to Wolverhampton on a Friday evening means it's ready to run. Bryan Carver takes the ride on Queens Venture for Dean Summersby, who has [D] form, and he's been riding with real confidence lately. Don't dismiss him at a price.

The closer — the 2m 7f Class 5 handicap hurdle at 19:36 — is a big field of eleven and a proper stamina test to end the evening. Stiletto for Sophie Leech has [C,D] form and is top-rated at 100. She's been around the block, knows the track, and Charlie Hammond... wait, that's the 17:03. Here it's Harry Kimber, who rides her with authority. Sonyourastar for Olly Murphy with Sean Bowen is interesting at 99 — Murphy again, Bowen again. The man is everywhere tonight and for good reason.

Going Conditions: Good Ground Sorts the Men from the Boys

The SMM reading of 54% puts this firmly in the Good bracket — not quick, not dead, just honest. For the chasers over the longer trips, it rewards horses that jump fluently and travel well rather than those that need to grind. Giovanni Change and Dexperts Opinion both have form on similar ground. For the hurdlers, Good going at Wolverhampton in September can ride a touch quicker than you'd expect as the evening progresses and the dew hasn't settled yet — so anything that wants to bowl along and make use of its jumping ability is at an advantage. Anything that needs the mud flying to be at its best should be opposed.

Best Bets: Tom's Ones to Watch

  • Dexperts Opinion (16:30) — Course and distance form, prime age, Sean Bowen in the saddle. My best bet of the evening.
  • Tilehurst (18:36) — Course and distance winner, top-rated, Good ground suits. Solid each-way proposition.
  • Handlethekettle (19:06) — Class horse, proven at the track, Gavin Sheehan knows how to deliver him. Hard to oppose.
  • Brave Lion (17:36) — Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen in the bumper. That combination doesn't need a second invitation.
  • Giovanni Change (16:30) — Don't let the age fool you. Eleven he may be, but he knows every blade of grass at this venue and Jamie Hamilton will give him a masterclass ride.

It's a cracking evening's sport at one of the jumps game's more underrated venues. Get the card up, get the kettle on — or something stronger — and enjoy it. Good luck to all.
