Jump racing in late June is a peculiar beast. The summer jumps schedule divides opinion — purists grumble, regulars embrace it — but if you've spent any time at Brighton, you'll know the place has its own charm regardless of season. The undulating, left-handed track rewards horses that travel well and handle a bit of cut, and today's Good, Good to Soft in places going is about as fair a surface as you'll find at this time of year. It's not a bog, but it's not a rattler either. Horses that want a little give underfoot will be in their element.

Non-runners have trimmed a few fields, which generally helps punters narrow things down. Let's get into it.

The Feature Race: Oakmere Homes Handicap Hurdle (15:37)

The headline act on the hurdles card is the Oakmere Homes Handicap Hurdle over 2m 1f 46y — a Class 2 GBB race with £43,000 in prize money and a field of nine after non-runners. This is the race the big yards have targeted, and it shows in the ratings.

Filibustering (5yo, rated 122, Harry Derham/Paul O'Brien) is a course debutant here but carries a course-and-distance win marker [D], suggesting he's already shown he appreciates this sort of trip. At five, he's still on the upgrade and Derham's horses tend to arrive fit and ready. On Good to Soft he should be perfectly suited — this isn't a horse that needs extremes.

Fiveonefive (8yo, rated 127, Cian Collins/Danny Gilligan) is the top-rated runner in the race and holds both course and distance form [C,D]. That double tick is significant at Brighton — the undulations catch plenty out on debut, and a horse that's already navigated the track successfully has a meaningful edge. Rated 127, he's giving weight away to most of the field, but Collins has him in good heart this season and Gilligan is a capable pilot.

Miss Maverick (9yo, rated 122, Gary Hanmer/Sean Bowen) is one I wouldn't dismiss. Bowen is operating at a high level right now and Hanmer's mare has been placed consistently at this level. Nine-year-olds can be written off too readily in summer jumping — many of them thrive on the better ground and the less gruelling schedule.

The wildcard is Zillow (6yo, unrated, Faye Bramley/Brian Hughes). No official rating means we're largely flying blind, but Hughes doesn't ride no-hopers and Bramley has been quietly improving as a trainer. Watch the market here — if Zillow drifts, swerve. If she firms up, respect it.

The Feature Chase: Oakmere Homes Handicap Chase (16:15)

The companion feature over the sticks is a tight six-runner Class 2 over 2m 5f 34y. Small fields over fences in summer can be deceptive — the lack of runners doesn't always mean a lack of intrigue.

Pour Les Filles (8yo, rated 130, Mickey Bowen/Sean Bowen) heads the market on ratings and has Sean Bowen in the saddle, who rides with real authority over fences. The mare is the joint top-weight alongside Light N Strike (10yo, rated 130, Mickey Bowen/Shane Fenelon), who holds a course-and-distance win [D]. It's worth noting that Mickey Bowen saddles both — he'll have a view on which represents the better chance, so watch where the stable money goes.

Breizh River (8yo, rated 127, Tristan Davidson/Harry Reed) is the one that interests me most. Rated 3lb below the joint top-weights, he also holds course-and-distance form [D] and Davidson has been in decent form. On Good to Soft ground, a horse with a proven record around here is hard to ignore. Reed is an underrated pilot who makes few mistakes.

Key Runners Across the Card

13:57 — Mares' Novices' Hurdle

The opening mares' novice hurdle is tricky, with several unrated runners making assessment difficult. Eremenko (5yo, rated 107, Donald McCain/Theo Gillard) is the standout on ratings and McCain's yard knows how to produce a novice hurdler ready to go. Gillard has been riding with confidence this summer and at 107 she's got a clear edge on the book. Cinating (4yo, unrated, Gordon Elliott/Sean Bowen) is the one to fear — Elliott sending a runner over from Ireland with Bowen booked is never a trivial matter. She may be unrated but the booking tells you plenty.

14:27 — Burlington Stone Novices' Handicap Hurdle

Path of Stars (5yo, rated 78, Seamus Mullins/Benjamin Macey) holds course, distance and course-and-distance form [C,D] — the full set. In a novices' limited handicap, that kind of familiarity with the track is a genuine asset. Mullins is a canny handler at this level and 78 looks workable off the bottom of the weights. Fine As Wine (8yo, rated 94, Gary Hanmer/Sean Bowen) is the class act in the field and Bowen's presence again commands respect, but conceding 16lb to Path of Stars on a track the latter knows well is a meaningful ask.

15:02 — Campbell & Rowley Handicap Hurdle

Three non-runners thin this out to eleven. Sea The Clouds (9yo, rated 118, James Moffatt/Leah Noreci) holds both course and distance form [C,D] and Moffatt saddles several today — he clearly fancies his chances with this one given the booking of Noreci, who rides his string regularly. Joint top-rated alongside Miss Manzor (6yo, rated 118, Gordon Elliott/Sean Bowen). Elliott and Bowen again. If you're sensing a theme, you're paying attention.

16:55 — Holker Hall Handicap Chase (3m 1f)

The staying chase over three miles is the stamina test of the day. Halfway House Lad (7yo, rated 89, James Moffatt/Leah Noreci) holds course and distance form [C,D] and the yard clearly knows the track well. Judicial Review (8yo, rated 84, James Moffatt/Brian Hughes) also carries the double tick [C,D] — Moffatt has two strong claims here. On Good to Soft over three miles, proven stayers around Brighton's undulations are at a premium.

17:28 — Women's Community Matters Chase

The closer is a Class 5 chase over 2m 1f with four non-runners. Fort Randall (7yo, rated 105, Noel C. Kelly/Mr Oran McGill) tops the ratings and Ghasham (7yo, rated 102, Sam England/Sean Bowen) has Bowen back in the plate. Intenzo (5yo, rated 99, Mark Walford/Jamie Hamilton) is interesting at the foot of the weights — Hamilton is a reliable partner for northern-trained horses and five-year-olds can outrun their mark in these summer chases.

Going Conditions: Who Benefits?

Good to Good to Soft in places is a fair surface but it will find out any horse that's been freshened up on quicker ground. The slight give rewards horses with a clean jumping technique — those that get in tight and rely on quick footwork can find the ground unforgiving. For the hurdle races, horses with a flat-race background or those that travel smoothly through their races will hold an advantage. In the chases, proven jumpers who don't hang in the air will be at a premium. Breizh River, Sea The Clouds and Path of Stars all fit that profile based on what we know of their course records.
