About Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton Racecourse, nestled in the heart of the West Midlands, boasts a rich history dating back to 1825, though its modern incarnation truly began with the introduction of its all-weather track. Renowned as a flat racing venue, it transitioned from turf to Polytrack in 1994, then to the current Tapeta surface, ensuring year-round racing action regardless of the weather. The track itself is a left-handed oval, measuring just under a mile in circumference, characterised by its relatively tight turns which demand agility from runners. Races are contested over distances ranging from the minimum five furlongs up to two miles, with its long home straight providing ample opportunity for horses to make their challenge. What truly sets Wolverhampton apart is its floodlit course, enabling a busy schedule of evening meetings, and its unique position as the only UK racecourse with a hotel situated in the centre of the track. While it doesn't host Group 1 races, it's a vital proving ground for horses throughout the winter months, offering competitive handicaps and conditions races that often serve as stepping stones for future stars.
