Welsh Valleys Deliver Sunday Gold
What a cracking afternoon we've had at Ffos Las! The Carmarthenshire track served up a proper Sunday feast with seven races that had everything - promising novices, competitive handicaps, and more than a few horses that'll be lighting up the summer circuit.
The good to soft ground played fair all afternoon, with that soil moisture reading of 54 hitting the sweet spot. Perfect conditions for some serious National Hunt action, and the quality of today's Ffos Las racecard didn't disappoint.
Feature Race Sets The Standard
The Mercedes-Benz of Chichester Mares' Handicap Hurdle was the pick of the card, and what a contest it shaped up to be! Five quality mares going to war over two and a half miles - this had 'race of the day' written all over it from the moment the weights were published.
Smugglers Haven and Queens Venture came into this rated 115 apiece, setting up a proper head-to-head. Miss Lily Bradstock taking the ride on Smugglers Haven caught the eye - she's been in flying form this season and knows her way around this track.
But don't sleep on Fresh As A Daisy for Paul O'Brien. Rated 110, she's been knocking on the door in better company and this looked like her chance to grab a deserved success. The way she's been traveling in her races suggests there's a big performance brewing.
Novices Show Promise For The Future
The opening KSR Lighting Novices' Hurdle threw up some fascinating storylines. Handmedownastar with Harry Cobden aboard was the form pick on a mark of 110, but it's the unrated runners that really caught the imagination.
Flash Man comes into this with a rating of 112 - that's serious form for a novice event. Kevin Brogan in the saddle suggests connections mean business, and this looked like a stepping stone to bigger things.
But keep a close eye on Conkwell Dancer. Unrated and relatively unexposed, but the whispers from the yard have been positive. Bradley Harris knows this track like the back of his hand, and these unrated types can spring surprises when the handicapper hasn't got their measure yet.
Summer Chase Series Heats Up
Two ARC Summer Chase Series qualifiers on the card meant serious business for the staying chasers. The 3m 1f contest looked a proper test, with Jack's Jury heading the weights for Callum Pritchard.
But the eye was drawn to Friends Don't Ask for Brendan Powell. Rated 87 but carrying those double letters (C,D), this one's been consistent without winning lately. Sometimes that's exactly what you want in a long-distance chase - a horse that knows its job and stays on strongly.
Prince Cleni for Gavin Sheehan looked the each-way angle. Rated 82 in this company, he's been running some decent races in defeat and the step up in trip could unlock improvement.
The shorter chase qualifier threw up Majestic Moment as the form pick, but Thistle Be The One looked the value play. David Noonan doesn't make the trip to Wales for no-hopers, and this one's been running with credit in similar contests.
Ones To Follow
Several horses marked themselves out as serious prospects for the summer season ahead.
Lelantos in the marathon hurdle looked a horse going places. Paul O'Brien's booking caught the attention, and this type of stamina test often sorts out the genuine stayers from the also-rans.
In the mares' maiden bumper, La Dame Ecarlate shaped like one for the notebook. Gavin Sheehan taking the ride suggests this French-bred filly has ability, and these Category 3 elimination races often throw up future stars.
Sky Blue Ribbon is another bumper horse worth following. Richie McLernon has been riding with confidence all season, and unraced fillies from decent yards can improve rapidly once they get their heads in front.
Looking Ahead
Today's action sets up nicely for the summer season. Those Summer Chase Series qualifiers will be looking at the bigger prizes later in the campaign, while several of the novice hurdlers look ready for a step up in grade.
The form from today's feature race should work out well - that level of mare is always in demand for the summer festivals, and any horse that ran well here will be one to follow in similar company.
What impressed most was the competitive nature of every contest. From the opening novice hurdle to the closing bumper, there were genuine chances spread throughout the field. That's what makes Ffos Las such a pleasure - proper racing where form and judgment matter.
Roll on the next Welsh adventure - today proved once again that Sunday racing can deliver the goods when the quality's there to begin with!
