A Soft September Day on the Downs

There's something about Goodwood in early September that always takes me back. My dad used to say the Festival in July was for the glamour, but the September meetings were for the proper racing folk — the ones who actually cared what was happening between the white rails. He wasn't wrong. The crowds thin out, the bunting comes down, and what you're left with is a genuinely beautiful racecourse doing what it does best.

Today, though, Goodwood is wearing its autumn coat a little early. The going is soft — a reminder that summer doesn't last forever, even on the Sussex Downs — and that's going to matter enormously as we work our way through a seven-race card this afternoon. Soft ground here is no joke. The undulations on this track can drain stamina from a horse that doesn't truly stay, and it separates the genuine stayers from those who've been flattered on quicker surfaces. The Feature Race: £30,000 Fillies' Handicap (16:25)

The standout race on the card — both in terms of prize money and quality — is the Reprocolor Premier EBF Fillies' Handicap Stakes over a mile and two furlongs at 16:25. Thirty thousand pounds for seven fillies and mares, and on soft ground over this trip, it's a race that rewards class and stamina in equal measure.

Lady Roisia (Ralph Beckett / Hector Crouch) heads the weights on a mark of 90 and is the one to beat on ratings alone. Beckett knows this track and this type of race inside out, and Crouch is a jockey who rides Goodwood's quirks with real intelligence. At three, she'll need to prove she handles the soft, but Beckett's fillies are almost always well-prepared for conditions.

Hoseki (William Haggas / Tom Marquand) carries the [D] flag, meaning she's won over this course and distance before — and that counts for a great deal at Goodwood, where the track's unique shape rewards familiarity. Rated 88 and partnered by the ever-reliable Marquand, she looks the most complete package in the field. On soft ground over a trip she's already conquered here, she's hard to dismiss.

Hollywell Stream (Jane Chapple-Hyam / Callum Shepherd) also holds a course-and-distance win [D] and comes in rated 85. Chapple-Hyam has had a quietly excellent season, and Shepherd is a jockey who tends to go under the radar until the moment he doesn't. Worth each-way consideration at what should be a decent price.

Amateur Jockeys' Handicap: The Perfect Opener (13:30)

We kick off at 13:30 with the amateur jockeys' handicap over one mile three furlongs and 140 yards — a race that always generates a warm atmosphere and, if we're honest, a fair bit of good-natured chaos. I love these races. There's a humanity to them that the professional card can sometimes lack.

On the form, Ribble River (Lizzie Quinlan) stands out. The five-year-old carries both the [C] and [D] flags — course and distance form — and that's as good a starting point as you'll find in any race. Partnered by Mr Jack Loughnane, who rides with growing confidence, Ribble River's ability to handle this specific track and trip on what will be testing ground makes him the one to side with.

I'd Go Maniac (Alan King / Miss Georgia King) is the top-rated runner at 70 and has course-and-distance form to boot [D]. Alan King's horses tend to show up ready, and the seven-year-old's experience on soft ground will be an asset when the field strings out up the home straight.

Flightofthephoenix (Charles Hills / Mr James Hills) is an interesting runner — there's always something charming about a trainer-jockey family combination, and the Hills pairing have made it work before. The four-year-old holds course-and-distance form [D] and at a rating of 68, sits right in the heart of this competitive field.

Keep an eye too on Austrian Theory (Tim Easterby / Mr Thomas Easterby) — another family combination, and the Easterbys know how to get a horse ready for a day like this. Roland Garros (Hayley Burton / Mr Cian Murphy) also catches the eye with course-and-distance form [D], though the mark of 66 leaves him with a bit to find on ratings.

The Two-Year-Old Races: Young Talent on Soft Turf

There's a feast of juvenile racing today with four races for two-year-olds, and soft ground is always an interesting filter at this stage of the season. Some youngsters take to it naturally; others simply don't fire. Pedigree becomes more relevant than ever.

In the EBF Novice Stakes at 14:05, Under Arrest (William Haggas / Tom Marquand) is the name that jumps off the page. Haggas and Marquand have been a formidable partnership all season, and their juveniles tend to arrive at the track well-schooled and ready to go. Burning Up (K. R. Burke / Clifford Lee) holds course-and-distance form [C,D] which is remarkable for an unraced or lightly-raced juvenile, and Burke's two-year-olds are consistently among the best-prepared in the north.

In the Jackie Harbridge Memorial Novice Stakes at 14:40, Flying Pirate (Eve Johnson Houghton / Charles Bishop) is top-rated at 85 and looks the one to beat on figures. Johnson Houghton has been in fine form this season and Bishop is a jockey who suits Goodwood's demands well.

The Nursery Handicap at 15:17 is a tricky puzzle, as nurseries always are. Koodini (Hugo Palmer / David Probert) holds course-and-distance form [D] and is trained by a man who knows Goodwood well. Katie's Cavalier (David Loughnane / Hector Crouch) also carries [D] form and with Crouch aboard — who is having a fine season — is worth a second look at what should be a fair price.

The EBF Ashton in Makerfield Novice Stakes at 15:52 over six furlongs gives us Sharadd (William Haggas / Tom Marquand) as a fascinating unknown quantity. Haggas runners at this track rarely show up without a chance, and Marquand's booking speaks volumes.

The Closing Handicap: Value in the Finale (17:00)

We close out the day with a fourteen-runner handicap over a mile and two furlongs, and fourteen runners on soft ground over this trip at Goodwood is a recipe for a proper stamina test. Sharp Move (William Haggas / Tom Marquand) heads the weights at 80 and holds course-and-distance form [D] — Haggas is all over this card today, which tells you something about the strength of his string right now. High Point (Iain Jardine / Greg Fairley) carries both the [C] and [D] flags and at 77 is nicely weighted. Pearl Eye (Jim Goldie / Lauren Young) also holds [C,D] form and represents a trainer who sends horses a long way from Scotland only when he fancies them.

Best Bets & Ones to Watch

  • Best Bet: Hoseki (16:25) — Course-and-distance winner, top-class trainer and jockey, soft ground should suit. The complete package in the feature race.
  • Each-Way Pick: Hollywell Stream (16:25) — Course-and-distance form, in-form connections, and likely to attract each-way money at a fair price.
  • Amateur Race Selection: Ribble River (13:30) — Both course and distance form on what will be testing ground. The standout qualifier in the opener.
