A Soft September Friday on the Sussex Downs

There's something about Goodwood in September that always gets me. The summer crowds have thinned, the bunting's long gone, and what you're left with is proper racing — no fanfare, just horses and turf and the kind of quiet drama that reminds you why you fell in love with this sport in the first place. My late father used to call the autumn meetings at Goodwood "the honest ones". I think he was right.

Today we've got seven races across the afternoon, and the ground is the first thing to get your head around. The going is Soft, Good to Soft in places — and after a damp start to September, that's unlikely to ease much before the first. This is going to sort the field out in every race. The Feature Race: Tattersalls £40,000 EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes (14:40)

With the biggest prize pot of the day at £40,000, the Tattersalls Fillies' Novice Stakes over 6f is your headline act. It's a small but select field of four two-year-old fillies, and the one that immediately catches the eye is Etonnante, trained by K. R. Burke and ridden by Clifford Lee.

Etonnante arrives here rated 92 — a figure that stands head and shoulders above her three unrated rivals — and crucially she carries the [D] course-and-distance winner's badge. She's already shown she can handle this track and this trip, and on soft ground, that experience is worth its weight in gold. Burke is a trainer who knows exactly when a horse is ready, and bringing a filly of this rating back to a Class 2 novice suggests real confidence. She's the one to beat.

Hugo Palmer's Californian Angel (David Probert) and Ralph Beckett's Marsala (Hector Crouch) are both unraced or unrated, so they're unknown quantities — though Beckett in particular is a trainer who tends to have his fillies spot-on first or second time out. Nigel Tinkler's Novah, ridden by Faye McManoman, is the outsider of the party. On paper, this is Etonnante's race to lose — but on soft ground, inexperienced horses can surprise you, and the prize money means connections will have brought their best.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

Gentle Warrior — 13:30 Apprentice Handicap (1m 6f)

The opening race is the Thomas Armstrong Group Apprentice Handicap over a mile and six furlongs, and this is a lovely opportunity to watch the next generation of jockeys strut their stuff. Eight runners go to post, and I want to draw your attention to Gentle Warrior, trained by K. R. Burke and partnered by Toby Moore. The four-year-old carries the [C,D] flag — that means he's won at Goodwood and over this distance. On soft ground, over a staying trip, course-and-distance form is absolutely invaluable. He's rated 72, which puts him mid-pack, but his track record here makes him the one I'd side with.

Keep an eye too on Dream Harder (rated 74, top weight) ridden by Hope Regan for Mark Loughnane — the seven-year-old is the highest rated in the field and Regan is a rider with a bright future. Yellow Card, ridden by Isobelle Chalmers for Mickey Bowen, is another to note — second in the weights and from a yard that travels well.

Kodi Lion — 15:15 Oakmere Homes Handicap (6f)

Fourteen runners over six furlongs in the afternoon's sprint handicap makes this one of the trickiest puzzles of the day. The field is competitive and closely matched at the top of the weights, but Kodi Lion stands out. Michael Appleby's five-year-old carries the [C,D] flag and is rated 84, making him one of the better-credentialled horses in the race. Cieren Fallon takes the ride, and he's a jockey who handles soft ground tracks with real composure. With course-and-distance form already on the CV, Kodi Lion ticks a lot of boxes.

Woven (10yo, rated 84) also carries [C,D] for Michael Dods — a remarkable old campaigner at ten years of age who clearly loves this place. Don't dismiss him. Connor Beasley knows the horse well and Dods doesn't make long journeys without a reason. Conor Whiteley aboard Yokohama in the later race is worth a mention too — a rider who's been in fine form and handles soft conditions well.

Secret Mistral — 15:47 Aesterius at Bearstone Stud Handicap (5f)

The five-furlong dash is always a spectacle at Goodwood, and Secret Mistral looks a solid each-way proposition. Tony Carroll's six-year-old carries the [C,D] flag, is rated 81, and Clifford Lee — who's having a busy day in the saddle — takes the ride. On soft ground, the five furlongs here can ride longer than you'd expect, and horses with proven form on this course and going have a real edge. Jer Batt (rated 80, also [C,D]) for David and Nicola Barron is the other course-and-distance winner in this field and must be respected. Kyle McHugh rides Expressionless in the opener — a rider to watch as the apprentice ranks continue to develop some real talent.

How the Soft Ground Changes Everything

I can't stress this enough for anyone newer to the game: going conditions on a day like today can make or break a selection. Soft ground at Goodwood, particularly on the longer tracks, puts a premium on stamina and experience. Horses that dash and dash on fast ground can find themselves floundering when the mud gets hold of them. Conversely, a horse that looked ordinary on a quick summer surface can suddenly look world-class when the ground gives.

The [C,D] flags — course and distance winners — are your friends today more than ever. These horses have already navigated this track in potentially similar conditions. That's not a guarantee, of course (nothing in racing is), but it's the kind of solid foundation that gives you confidence when you're weighing up a bet. In small fields like the 14:05 and 14:40, the form lines are easier to read. In the big sprint handicap at 15:15 with fourteen runners, the soft ground is your filter — use it.

Best Bets and Ones to Watch

Let's bring it all together. Here's my shortlist for the day:

  • Etonnante (14:40) — The standout selection of the day. Rated 92, course-and-distance winner, in a field of unrated rivals. The soft ground shouldn't be an issue for a horse of her class. Best bet of the day.
  • Gentle Warrior (13:30) — Course-and-distance form in a staying apprentice handicap. Toby Moore is a capable young rider and Burke has him here for a reason.
  • Kodi Lion (15:15) — [C,D] form in the big sprint handicap. Fallon is a smart booking and the horse's record here speaks for itself.
  • Secret Mistral (15:47) — Each-way value in the five-furlong dash. Proven at this course and distance, and soft ground won't inconvenience him.
  • Woven (15:15) — Ten years old and still turning up at Goodwood with course-and-distance form. A remarkable old character and well worth an each-way flutter at what should be a generous price.
