Evening Action Under The Lights

Thursday evening brings a competitive seven-race card to Great Yarmouth, with the Norfolk track offering good going throughout. The evening session kicks off at 4:22pm and runs through to 7:30pm, providing plenty of opportunities for punters to get stuck in.

The good ground will suit the speedier types, particularly over the shorter trips. I've walked this track countless times, and when the going's riding good like this, it pays to side with horses that can travel and quicken. The undulations here catch out the slow coaches.

Feature Race: Keltruck Chase Holds The Key

The £11,700 Keltruck Handicap Chase (6:00pm) stands out as tonight's feature, bringing together five runners over two and a half miles. Insurrection tops the weights on 138 for Paul Nicholls, with Harry Cobden doing the steering.

This nine-year-old has been thereabouts in some decent company this season. Rated 15lb clear of his nearest rival, he'll need to give lumps of weight away, but that's what class horses do. Cobden's booking speaks volumes – he doesn't travel to evening meetings for no-hopers.

Numitor brings veteran experience at 12 years old. James Bowen takes the ride for Heather Main, and this old warrior has course form in the bag. At 130, he's well-handicapped if the legs still have some spring in them. These old campaigners know their job.

Key Runners To Follow

Maximum Offers opens the card in the novices' chase, with Gavin Sheehan taking the ride for Jamie Snowden. Rated 108, he faces just two rivals over three miles plus. The small field suits, and Sheehan's presence suggests connections fancy their chances.

In the conditional jockeys' hurdle, Geordies Betty catches the eye for Kevin Bishop. Luke Scott takes 7lb off her back, bringing her down to an effective mark of 92. She's been consistent this term and the trip should suit.

The maiden hurdle (5:30pm) looks a puzzle with 14 runners, but Fidendum brings the highest rating at 108. He's been knocking on the door and this looks a good opportunity to get his head in front. American Empire for Donald McCain also demands respect – the yard's been in good form lately.

Later in the evening, Court In A Storm stands out in the Robert Howell Hurdle. Kim Bailey's seven-year-old has course form and Tom Bellamy knows the track well. At 115, he's nicely weighted for this three-mile test.

Going Conditions Analysis

The good ground plays to the strengths of the faster, more athletic types tonight. In my experience, Great Yarmouth on good going favours horses with a turn of foot rather than the grinding stayers. The track's undulating nature means horses need to be able to pick up and change gear.

Insurrection will relish these conditions – he's always gone his best races on a sound surface. Similarly, Geordies Betty has shown her best form on good ground this season.

The longer trips tonight – particularly the three-mile contests – will test stamina reserves. But on this ground, it's still pace that kills. Look for horses that can travel sweetly through the early stages.

Jockey Bookings Worth Noting

Gavin Sheehan has two rides tonight and both look live chances. His mount in the opener, Maximum Offers, faces just two rivals, while his later ride Block Rockin Beats brings solid form to the three-mile hurdle.

William Maggs picks up spare rides for Donald McCain, including Iamyouare in the conditional race and Hellion in the maiden hurdle. McCain's been hitting the target regularly, so both warrant respect.

Harry Cobden's presence on Insurrection in the feature adds significant weight to that selection. When the champion jockey travels to evening meetings, it's usually for a good reason.

Best Bets and Ones To Watch

My top selection has to be Insurrection in the 6:00pm feature chase. Yes, he's giving weight away, but class tells and Cobden wouldn't be here without a genuine chance.

Geordies Betty looks overpriced in the conditional jockeys' hurdle. The 7lb claim brings her mark down to a workable level, and she's been running consistently well.

In the maiden hurdle, Fidendum has the form in the book to win this. He's been placed in better company and this represents a good opportunity.

For the bumper finale, keep an eye on anything from the Tom Symonds yard – he's got three runners and knows what it takes to win these contests.
