There are worse ways to spend a Tuesday afternoon than up on the hill at Towcester. Seven races, a decent spread of prize money, and ground that looks genuinely fair — mainly Good with Good to Firm in places, soil moisture sitting at 53. That's not quick enough to be a worry for most, but it does reward horses who travel well through their races rather than those who need to be produced late off a strong pace. Towcester's undulating track, with that punishing climb to the finish, has a way of sorting out the genuine stayers from the pretenders. Keep that in mind all afternoon.

Feature Race: The Ready Freddie Go Handicap Chase (16:00, Class 3, 3m 10y)

The pick of the card for me is the 16:00 — a Class 3 handicap chase over three miles worth £11,700 to the winner. It's a GBB Race too, so connections have extra incentive to run their best horses. Seven runners, a rating spread from 110 to 132, and a proper test up that Towcester hill. This is the race I've been looking forward to all week.

Grand Clermont (rated 132) heads the weights and is the one they all have to beat. David Pipe's ten-year-old carries top weight but he's a course and distance winner — that C,D flag next to his name tells you plenty. Rian Corcoran takes the ride, and he's a conditional who's been punching well above his weight this season. Grand Clermont knows every blade of grass around here and the Good ground will suit a horse who's shown his best form on decent surfaces. The concern, as always with a horse his age, is whether the fire still burns as brightly. I think it does.

Mt Fugi Park (rated 129) is the biggest danger. Benjamin Macey rides for the Jonjo O'Neill yard, and this eight-year-old has a course win in the book. He's 3lb lower than Grand Clermont and has the profile of a horse who can go close fresh. Bagheera Ginge (rated 127) for Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies with Sam Twiston-Davies in the saddle is always worth respecting — that combination rarely turns up without a plan. He doesn't have a course win to his name here, which is a slight knock, but at the weights he's competitive.

My verdict: Grand Clermont is the bet of the day. Course and distance form, a jockey who's been riding with real confidence, and ground that should suit. He's the one.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

14:00 — Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle (2m 7f 70y)

This conditional jockeys' race opens the card and there's genuine form to unpick. Billy Boi Blue (rated 113) has both course and distance form — that C,D flag is your starting point in any race at a track as unique as Towcester. Nick Slatter takes the ride for the David Killahena and Graeme McPherson yard, and Slatter has been improving noticeably. At 113, he's only a pound off the top-rated Imperial Data but has the course knowledge advantage.

Pike Road (rated 112) is another C,D horse and Freddie Keighley rides for his father Martin — a combination that always catches my eye. Family yards tend to know their horses inside out, and Freddie's been riding with plenty of confidence lately. On Good ground over this trip, Pike Road is firmly in the mix.

Crystal Glance (rated 110) has a course win and Ben Smith takes the ride for the Greenall and Guerriero yard. She's 4lb lower than the top weight and the going should suit. Don't dismiss her.

The one I'd oppose slightly is Imperial Data — top-rated at 114 but no course or distance form to speak of. Charlie Maggs is a capable conditional but Towcester is a track that punishes horses who haven't been here before. I'll side with experience.

14:30 — Maiden Hurdle (2m 3f 207y)

The maiden hurdle is always a bit of a lottery, but two horses stand out from the pack. Time In A Bottle (rated 109) for Dan and Harry Skelton is the obvious one — an official mark already in place suggests this horse has run under rules before, and the Skelton operation is as sharp as any in training. Harry Skelton knows how to produce a horse fresh, and the Good ground is exactly what you want for a horse making its hurdling mark at this track.

Jentobello (rated 110) is actually the highest-rated of the pair and Brian Hughes is a jockey I'd always want on my side in a race like this. Iain Jardine trains him, and runners from that yard making the trip south tend to be well-prepared. The market will tell the story here, but these two look a class apart from the unrated horses.

15:30 — Handicap Hurdle (2m 3f 207y)

Twelve runners in the 15:30 and it's a proper puzzle. Glance of Glory (rated 105) has a distance win and Sean Bowen — one of the sharpest jockeys in the game — takes the ride for Martin Keighley. The six-year-old is on a mark that looks workable and Good ground over this trip is exactly his conditions. Tommy Cullen (rated 107) has course and distance form and is one to keep on the right side of in a competitive field.

17:05 — Handicap Chase (2m 4f)

The final race of the day is another ARC Summer Chase Series Qualifier and GBB Race. Lady Kara (rated 107) for Dr Richard Newland has a distance win and, at five years old, is potentially still improving. Luke Scott rides. Mix of Clover (rated 108) is twelve years old but has been around the block and has a course win — veteran horses at tracks they know are always worth a second look, especially when the ground isn't testing.

Going Analysis: How the Ground Shapes the Card

Good to Firm in places with mainly Good ground and a soil moisture reading of 53 — this is fair racing ground, the sort that rewards athleticism and jumping ability over raw stamina. At Towcester specifically, where the track climbs relentlessly in the final stages, you want horses that are efficient through their races rather than those who rely on deep ground to get them home.

The horses I'd be cautious about are those who have shown their best form on soft or heavy ground. The ground today won't inconvenience genuine jumpers, but it will expose any horse who needs give underfoot to find their stride. Course and distance winners on similar ground are the profile to follow — and there are plenty of them on today's card.
